This game is amazing. I'm about halfway through i think, but I need to slow down. I've kind of been speed running the story progression just because its so fucking good, and as a result I dont think I'm powerful enough to move on to the 3rd map. I haven't even fought a horde yet because they scare the fuck out of me.

The characters are fantastic. Sam Witwer, who is an absolute underrated gem of a national treasure, in the role of the player character (Deacon St. John) is just brilliant. The mocap, face capture, and performance capture are so well done, you'll find yourself appreciating the facial animation a great deal especially. The NPCs are varied and feel alive, and frankly most of them piss me off, buncha tryhards and pieces of shit, lol. The dialogue is so good that I feel emotionally invested enough to legitimately hate a lot of these fucks (obligatory FKSKIZZO). Meanwhile there's other characters you care deeply about, like your bro that you ride with and your absent wife. It really draws you in.

The game mechanics are a little different from what you typically see in an action horror. The horde mechanic is what stands out. The game isn't scary but barreling over a hill on your motorcycle and finding yourself suddenly waist deep in 100 or more (up to 500!) enemies all at once, just surrounded. I haven't yet learned to fight a horde, but just trying to get away from them while you have their aggro is tense as fuck. They'll clothesline your ass and knock you right off your bike.

Speaking of your bike, it's some of the most satisfying driving I've ever done in a game. I hate driving mechanics in games. I'm terrible at it. I veer all over the place. I can't stay on the fucking road. But this game, it's intuitive. It's manageable. I can stay on the road even! The driving is actually fun. I even skip fast traveling at times just to enjoy riding around on my motorcycle. It's fantastic. The implementation is just right for me.

As an aside, I'm running a ROG Ally, which is a mobile AMD processor, and it runs just great with no tweaking.

So anyways, if you skipped Days Gone like I did, as an action horror junkie, I highly recommend it l. The story and characters and voice acting are the highlight, and I just dont have a single complaint about the combat or driving, even the crafting (which I typically hate) is well done. My only complaint would be that the game has allowed me to progress the story before i feel prepared for it, and that's minor. Plus for all I know maybe I can handle the next chunk, I won't really won't know til I get there. Great game.

I didn’t liked it when I played on PS4 and I quit a couple hours in, but a couple of years later I played it on PC and loved it, put around 70 hours in it. It’s a pity that we don’t get to see a sequel and I understand why, but it is still a very fun game.

A lot of people missed it when it launched it came out on the heels of the last of us so people assumed it was a clone, it was also massively bugged on launch. The upcoming TV version has renewed interest in it though so depending on how that does we may get a sequel. Also did you know there are hidden clues it may be the same world as syphon filter?

The first time you see a horde, it's pretty damn amazing. Definitely something that's burned into your memory.

I really enjoyed it even if the story was a bit bad in some parts (not sure but I remember the beginning being pretty bad). I’d be happy to play a second one if it happened to be developped.

Expansion DLC just dropped today

From what I’ve seen there is the Broken Road DLC but it doesn’t bring any new story.

[–] bishoponarope@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Ah, for some reason I thought Broken Road was a story expansion. My bad.

Weird thing but I really enjoyed how the dialogs and reactions felt natural. Dacon felt like a 'normal' and believable person.

I love the combat/exploration barks, too. Sneaking into a ripper camp, and Sam starts ranting under his breath through clenched teeth about how despicable these people are. It adds some nice seasoning to the whole experience.

I wish they made a sequel already. Also so rare to have motorbike riding specifically as a mechanic woven into the protagonist’s story and not just an alternative to driving a car.

Cleaning up hordes in this game was some of the best platinuming I ever did. Distance is key, traps and aoe damage like molotovs help a ton.

I found this game to be pretty mediocre overall.

The early-game motorcycle is not good. A big part of the game is upgrading your bike, and this is fine, but early game you've got a motorcycle that can't outrun a dog, skids like you're on black ice, and needs a fill up every three minutes. By the end of the game that bike is a joy to ride, but it's weird to make a first impression like that.

The combat mechanics are good, but there's the weird progression thing again where early weapons are stupidly bad. A single shot form an M4 was way more powerful than from an M14. If you're like me, that's annoying.

The zombies are what they get right. They're fast and scary and they will destroy you. The hordes are challenging sandboxes of destruction that these developers nailed.

I downloaded it on this rec and I’ve been playing the hell out of it the past day. Sweet game that’s filled the last of us void I’ve been in since finishing those games. Def different, but similar genres and themes (so far anyway).

If you're only half way through you'll be happy to know the 2nd half is just as good. Great game.

I never heard of this game until it came out on Steam but I bought it on launch and was not disappointed. Really fun game.

Also, I noticed that the remaster update dropped today. Might just hop back in.

You have stumbled onto my favorite game of all time. I have no idea how many times I've played through it I think I stopped counting after 10

I got stuck on this part early on in the game where you have to enter this mobile research station thing. I could never find the entrance and gave up. Not a fan of how formulaic and repetitive the game was, anyway.
