Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

I've had pho from maybe over a dozen different Vietnamese places here in the states and have gone to a bunch of peoples' favorite pho joint because every time I mention that I don't love pho to somebody, they insist that I just haven't had good pho and we usually go to their favorite joint and I've always been a little disappointed.

I love soups, I love broth, I love noodles, I love different types of food from different cultures from all over the world. I don't think pho is that good.

I'll take a mediocre bowl of ramen over a "good" bowl of pho any day. Miss me with that branch of basil and a giant bowl of broth.

I have yet to try it but I've seen what's on offer around here and it just looks like bland soup. I mean, the broth is clear like straight water. That's not good pho is it?

I had Pho for the first time yesterday.

My mind was blown. So many intricate flavours in one bowl like holy shit.

I grew up deep in white trash country where the closest to multicultural cuisine you could get was the olive garden. I was in high school when a chain japanese joint opened up and I had sushi for the first time. Mind blown. Then moved to the coast, lots of authentic food it was amazing, but ramen when I first had that holy shit. Then I had pho, and I was expecting the mind blowing experience I got when I first had ramen. But it was meh. Very disappointed. I feel you.

A mediocre pho right after an amazing ramen could have that effect. I encourage you to try again.

Ahaha I've been conned, you were just looking for a free meal! Bloody genius, I'll have to use this one day....

Pho is cheap, let's go

ITT: comments from people who went to a shitty pho joint only once

I can definitely understand this as it was my opinion until I had a great bowl of pho. Any "good" bowl of pho is just as good as a bad bowl, but a great bowl is one of the most comforting noodle bowls IMO.

Also, I think pho with expectations going in is probably gonna disappoint. I started searching for good pho on my own before I really had an interest in ramen. Whenever I was taken to ramen shops on a recommendation I was mildly disappointed. Had some great ramen when I had no expectations at a place I went to on a whim.

Last thought, the toppings for pho go with my palate better than ramen toppings. So, my unpopular opinion is pho toppings are better than ramen toppings and fish cake is not good. 😅

I mean not everyone likes everything. I love ramen, but I love pho too. They’re different. I don’t think it needs to be a competition, it’s like saying apples are just ok but Gimmie that Florida orange!!

This post reminds me of this image:

Funny. I have one place that I like to get Pho at, but I’ve been disappointed everywhere else.

Maybe you just haven’t found your place yet.

While I disagree, I respect your opinion. Not every food is for everyone, and it sounds like you have put in the effort to try it out more than was even remotely necessary.

[–] Zombiepirate@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

IMO, the best kind is beef tendon. I can take or leave the other flavors, but a quality beef tendon pho is every bit the equal of a good ramen.

But yeah, it's not for everyone.

This reads like someone who eats pizza 4 times a week and claims to of had "the best pizza" in their elementary school cafeteria

[–] TurboDiesel@lemmy.world 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Eh, it's just ok. Like anything else, you have people who will make it their entire personality.

[–] Liam_Galt@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Sounds like you just haven't had good pho. 😤

[–] BettyWhiteInHD@lemmy.world -1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Literally every. time lol.

Thing is I like Vietnamese food, just not pho. Especially if it comes in a giant bowl.

[–] Discoslugs@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Lol now thats an unpopular opinion.

Fuckin love that big bowl.

[–] gimlithepirate@lemmy.world -1 points 2 years ago

I don't mind Pho, but I won't seek it out.

My favorite pho uses Udon rice noodles, lemongrass spicy broth, and beef brisket... But that's so far from traditional Pho I'm not really sure it counts anymore lol.

[–] DestroyerOfWorlds@lemmy.world -1 points 2 years ago

Bro have even tried "Pho 'Nuff"?

[–] howler@lemmy.world -1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion per say, but i get it. I didn't know what pho was the first time I tried it, and i was expecting something more ramen like. I also did not care for it... But a few months after that i found myself craving it one day... And now i love it. That being said, i can definitely see how it would be overhyped by people. It is not an especially amazing food really... But it is a food i quite enjoy, especially in the winter. Props to you for continuing to try it.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

per se

It's my go-to when I have a cold. All of those flavors cut through, and the silky texture of hot broth and rice noodles is so soothing.

Thank you. It needed to be said.
