Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

I agree. However, it’s important to point out that the apathy has been manufactured by those with the wealth and power to benefit from it in the short term.

You might wanna watch dont look up. Its pretty spot on in that department.

And I dont think anything will come through people's apathy - besides a world ending comet maybe.

I think people will get upset enough to get off their butts and do things. The issue I see currently is that demonstrating likely wont bring change but if people start disrupting harder (not more violent, although I'm not a pacifist at all) it will definitely bring change.

Nah, it's greed that will do that. Apathy is just a symptom for people that feel like they can't do anything against the greediest bastards. And it's also pushed as a control system to be able to get even more by those.

Meh, whatever.

This is kind of an apathy echo chamber tbh (not just here, other socials too). Out in the real world lots of people are trying very hard to improve things all around the globe. If you're feeling depressed by perceived apathy I would encourage you to look into organizations working to make a difference. They're out there and need your help.

That and our exceedingly obnoxious self importance as a species. We think we own the Earth, but we actually just live here, and we're gonna find out real soon how fun it is when nature decides our climate is no longer stable.

There sure is a lot of propaganda for people to be apathetic.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My theory is that there's TOO much for people to care.

Remember when we DIDN'T hear about what the president was doing MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY? If one of those presidents had decided to undermine democracy, it'd be a pretty big deal and we'd talk about nothing else for weeks.

But now, breaking news rolls out every hour or two, and it's just too much to absorb. People are tuning out because if they miss 3 controversies, there will be a fourth by the end of the day. Maybe they'll worry about that one.

Apathy is born out of being betrayed and hurt repeatedly

Nah. Hubris.

Or maybe permafrost ancient virus.

[–] bizarroland@fedia.io 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The ruling class of America have gone so far past hubris they are touching on surquedry.

Would be a shame if some sort of Greek tragedy would unfold.

One man's tragedy, is another man's comedy.

I just had a third package stolen out of my mailbox in a month. I don't usually feel this way, but your post speaks to me. Can I move to another country yet?

[–] lath@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sorry. Best we can do is imprisonment and slavery.

[–] tamal3@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh no! Let's not, please.

I think I'm over the apathy... It was actually sadness and overwhelm that I wasn't processing. I'm back.

[–] lath@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Glad to have you back! I recommend you pet a duck to gain a little happiness. Why a duck? Because there's tutorials on how to catch one safely. Enjoy!

[–] tamal3@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

Trying to catch a baby duck is like trying to hold water, or happiness, in your hands. They seem to be Schrodingers ducks for how rapidly and unexpectedly they move.

And an adult duck? They sometimes pet you back! I kept ducks for a while and one would regularly preen my fingers as though they were feathers.

Ducks can be happiness.

[–] Quazatron@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

That's, like, your opinion, man.

[–] peteyestee@feddit.org 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The apathy will come from the meanlessness of being subservient to to the heartless business of nations.

I don't want to feel anything but human and feeling human seems to be what they want you to denie and escape from.
