Europeans still aren't buying Teslas with figures out Wednesday showing sales plunged for a fifth month in a row in May, a blow to investors who had hoped anger toward Elon Musk would have faded by now.

Tesla sales fell 28% last month in 30 European countries even as the overall market for electric vehicles expanded sharply, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association. The poor showing comes after Tesla's billionaire CEO had promised a “major rebound” was coming last month, adding to a recent buying frenzy among investors.

They were selling on Wednesday, pushing the prices down more than 4% in early afternoon trading.

And their stock is still too damn high!

[–] Montreal_Metro@lemmy.ca 9 points 8 hours ago

At this point if a person buys teslas they are either a Nazi or ignorant and neither is good.

[–] Kickforce@lemmy.wtf 24 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I read Musk fired the Tesla manager for Europe and North America over the low sales, as if those weren't a direct result of Musk's own actions. Like there is only one person responsible for pushing the stupid cybertruck and for associating the brand with fascism.

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 7 points 11 hours ago

Don't you know that he's a genius and none of what he says or does can have any bad consequence? If it's not because of him, it must be because of someone else. Oh, BTW: he also fired a manager in Tesla who voiced against him damaging the brand name.

None of these people know anything about anything. Only Elon knows!!

[–] Bebopalouie@lemmy.ca 5 points 10 hours ago

I’ll be happy when there’s nothing to report because there are no more sales.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

Oh no how unfortunate.

[–] frenchfryenjoyer@lemmings.world 10 points 13 hours ago

Let's hope they drop even further 🙏

[–] UncleGrandPa@lemmy.world 10 points 14 hours ago

Even MAGAs are embarrassed to drive one of his Nazi mobiles

[–] NutWrench@lemmy.ml 18 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Could I have a list of these "investors?" Because they sound like fools who deserve to be tricked out of their money.

[–] MrMakabar@slrpnk.net 1 points 6 hours ago

Just look up the Musk followers on Xitter.

[–] Gates9@sh.itjust.works 4 points 14 hours ago

Liquidate Musk

[–] dellish@lemmy.world 57 points 1 day ago (4 children)

who had hoped anger toward Elon Musk would have faded by now

Even fucking goldfish remember what he's done. He has irreversibly associated Nazism with Tesla at the same time that cheaper and better electric vehicles are coming out of China. The only way is down and that's not going to change until he is no longer part of Tesla and a lot of time has passed.

[–] nulluser@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

Even fucking goldfish remember what he’s done.

And that's saying something.

[–] brown567@sh.itjust.works 8 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

There is precedent for a car brand started by a Nazi successfully shaking that image eventually

[–] towerful@programming.dev 4 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Over what sort of timeframe?
Couple months? Couple years? Couple decades?

[–] brown567@sh.itjust.works 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Dunno, wasn't born yet 🤷

[–] towerful@programming.dev 5 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

From the wiki, and I'm simplifying:
VW was handed over to the German government after being offered free-of-charge to Ford in 1948 by the British government (who ran the factory up till then).
In 1946 the produced 1000 cars per month. In 1949, 2 cars were sold in the US.
In 1952, 12 VWs were sold in Canada.
In 1955 they produced over 1 million Beetles.

So 3 years on life support being ran by the British. Dunno how long being run by the German government before becoming GmbH.

[–] MrMakabar@slrpnk.net 1 points 6 hours ago

The German government sold 60% of the company in 1960. So another 12 years.

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 3 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

And at these times, they could claim "Nazism is dead". The issue with Musk and Tesla is nazis are not going anywhere anytime soon. Maybe they should hire VW's CEO, actually. He managed to get the brand past the diesel-gate.

[–] towerful@programming.dev 3 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

So, we should be sending people to prison? Cause that's what happened to people involved in dieselgate. Along with the affected cars being recalled and the owners compensated.

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 1 points 7 hours ago

I doubt Elon will go to jail for being an asshole. Tesla may get in troubles for the promises of unsupervised FSD, but that's not the issue here.

I was more thinking about the brand's reputation recovery.

[–] brown567@sh.itjust.works 1 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

Yeah, that actually might work

Of course, Elon would have to be rid of his Tesla shares also

[–] T156@lemmy.world 8 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

Eve if he suddenly no longer had influence over Tesla, he's ruined their reputation enough that others have had time to catch up and make better vehicles.

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 6 points 20 hours ago

Cheaper and better EVs are here from lots of European, Korean, and (to a lesser degree) American brands.

It's been a long time since was "the only choice".

[–] ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 23 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Let's keep it going, I wanna get paid for getting a Tesla.

[–] Venus_Ziegenfalle@feddit.org 12 points 20 hours ago (3 children)

Unless he steps down as CEO and sells all his shares I don't see a Tesla redemption arc in Europe anytime soon.

[–] Darleys_Brew@lemmy.ml 8 points 13 hours ago

Even then it’s a shitty company, cause look how long they’ve tolerated him for.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 hours ago

And if he does step down as CEO and sell his shares, the stock will tank anyhow. The only reason it's currently about 100x over its realistic value is that people bought into the idea that Elon was this genius who was going to... well who knows. Nothing he could have done would have justified that valuation.

[–] Lifter@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

That would also tank the stock price though.

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 hours ago

Sooner or later, the stock price will tank. It's actually quite something that it is still that high, if anyone needed anymore proof that stock investors are not smarter than average Joe.

But Tesla sales are crashing worldwide, not just because of the brand, but because competition has caught up and is now getting ahead. Robo-taxis are going to compete with players that are years ahead on self-driving and safety concerns are going to force Tesla to trim down their price (assuming they manage to no longer need their "safety monitors", in which cas they will just not happen).

Humanoid robots are a tool that needs to find a use justifying its price (and there again, we might see competition from China…).

What's left??

[–] Venus_Ziegenfalle@feddit.org 2 points 14 hours ago

Short term yes but I think they could quickly recover beyond where they are now if Tesla managed to keep some good press coming.

[–] fluxion@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

Oh, i thought it was only down because Elon was off in Washington making America super awesome and not around to provide his brilliant leadership to Tesla

[–] carlossurf@lemmy.ca 28 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Hey elon dont worry the right wing nut jobs are gonna start buying your teslas, ah right most of them are broke lol

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 9 points 21 hours ago

Awww go fashy, stonk crashy :'( :'( LOL

[–] wabafee@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Even better they don't drive teslas cause they want those gas guzzler.

[–] mcv@lemm.ee 4 points 19 hours ago

Honestly, if he can get them to switch from those gas guzzlers to Teslas, that would still be better. But for that to work, the brand has to be utterly reviled by any "libtards". So keep sinking Tesla and let the Nazis rescue it.

Looks like Elon took the “shut your stupid fucking mouth up” advice. Too bad the damage to his image is irreversible. Oh well. I’m afraid I’m all out of tiny violins as well.

[–] sznowicki@lemmy.world 87 points 1 day ago (44 children)

Apart of Elon being idiot why would we even consider buying Tesla anyway? Competition is much better when it comes to things like access to authorized service. Charging network is a non-issue in Europe as we have full roaming and one socket standard and brands like Kia, Mercedes or even BYD have competitive prices while all being great quality.
