The more I think about public libraries the more I’m surprised they still even exist as free services. Apart from literal outdoor spaces like parks and shit they’re one of the only free public recreation/education facilities left I can think of, at least where I live. Hell, even half the main roads are toll roads. “Public” pools cost money, public transport is expensive as fuck where I live and not getting cheaper. And yet the library persists. Long live the library.

I mean they try defunding them regularly. I wouldn't be surprised if they cease to exist in the near future

Very true; the one in my town has been regularly starved for funding and until recently hadn't been renovated since like the 90s, with even older facilities & equipment

Yeh. I guess we’re lucky where I live that doesn’t seem to be on the agenda. Then again we also have a pretty entrenched and quite functional public healthcare system.

Damn that's where I'm trying to be. I hate living in the deep south

Mine have security guards to keep the "undesirables" out. agony-deep

since 2023ish i regularly go to my neighborhood library to get work done / read. it honestly rules and i wish i thought of it a lot, lot sooner.

can't justify coffee shops with prices as is and i'll just pack my own for the library

Public libraries are dope.

Fact check the article by looking at US government run and approved sources to see if it is legitimate, or an evil commie lie

[–] propter_hog@hexbear.net 15 points 7 months ago (2 children)

I prefer to go straight to the source and get all my info from cia.gov

[–] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 8 points 7 months ago

remember to check on the same stuff 50 to 80 years in the future to see what their internal documentation actually said

when i was in school we were taught to use the CIA World Factbook as a single primary source for our social science papers.

I mean, are they gonna lie about population figures and land area?

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 8 points 7 months ago

yeah it was fine for stuff like miles of telegraph wire or whatever.

That's a nice hard cover version of capital! What edition is it?

[–] mayakovsky@hexbear.net 6 points 7 months ago (2 children)

It's the new one from Princeton University Press

[–] Cowbee@hexbear.net 5 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Really need volume 2 and 3 in the same format

[–] propter_hog@hexbear.net 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Any idea if they're working on it?

[–] Cowbee@hexbear.net 3 points 7 months ago

I think they said they were, but I assume its years off.

[–] propter_hog@hexbear.net 4 points 7 months ago

Yep! That's the one.

[–] pierre_delecto@hexbear.net 6 points 7 months ago

Hell yeah. Also that new edition is great!
