There's a nationality that has been hounded in my country by huge volumes of derogatory disinformation. I want to wear a flag pin supporting those people. But, their government at home is tyrannical and I'm not a fan of using the national flag for that reason. I'm struggling here with a way to clearly and visually show my support of this community.

No. Sadly the tyrants and fascists have destroyed any idea of actual patriotism that is not directly tied to a government or political party. Flags now fall under the strict jurisdiction of howling psychopaths and underhanded politicians. It's a sad day for us all

No, flags, coats of arms, etc are about the government, not people. You might find some revolutionary flag if there was one in your culture but that's it. Still it would represent some old revolutionary ideas, not modern people.

So no. But don't be shy of using text on pins: this way you would be able to express your idea in the most precise way.

Thanks. I'll try to find another cultural symbol. Although for larger countries that can be quite difficult. In this case, it's India. The trashier end of our society here in Ireland seem to have marked them as convenient targets for harassment and assault.

At protests I have an upside down flag. Flying a flag upside down is an international signal of distress. Not sure if it applies to your situation but just fyi. Technically it is saying you are in distress which works since its the flag of my country and as part of it I am saying we are in distress. Anyway I am using it to say there is something wrong with the country but if righted it can be good.

Can you also fly them at 90°? I'm thinking about flags like Japan 🇯🇵 where is the same or the UK 🇬🇧 where most couldn't tell.

Im not sure but I doubt it as flying it sideways is a common way to hang a flag when not a pole. I think there is a direction there. Like with the us flag I think when hanging 90 it has to have the stars at the top and if you did it the other way it would be upside down 90.

I just realised that it’s not possible to fly some flags upside down. Japan specifically.

If you do an irish one, people will assume you're doing it by mistake, or flying a Côte d'Ivoire flag.

Very true. Don't want to be mixed up with those people who already don't know the difference :)

I was under the impression that that represents a nation under distress. In this case, the issue is that immigrants from that country are being unfairly targeted. Going by yours and other replies, maybe I should find another cultural symbol.

Be careful with this one. In some countries it is illegal to fly flags upside down as it considered as dispersing national symbol
