Fully agree. I feel like this should be its own post.
Sidenote: How about we build the grad up as a sort of international ml meeting hub with more events? We could watch something together or hold votes to help people understand how the soviets worked for example. Just ideas but i feel like the grad would profit from classic ml things like a 5 year plan, etc.

Yeah I think it's just the removal of the profit motive you're feeling OP, and I agree.
Hexbear feels like the grandchild of SomethingAwful, which is why i love it here
yeah federation and fediverses attempt to bring back this sorta controlled cultural space while still being connected to the broader culture
