Instead of dense neon lit cities, it’s just miles and miles of gas stations, car washes and fast food joints

Your first augmentation is to enhance your vision but it’s the non premium version. So instead of Johnny Silverhand walking around in 3D space, you just get random targeted/personalized ads interrupting your walks or combat by taking up half of your vision. It’s an IOT device so it’ll randomly update in the middle of a gun fight to patch a bug that fries your nerves randomly, but there’s bad service so it gets bricked

The mega corp that sells you the augmentation is funding a war against CostCo Security Solutions to secure the cold northern water supply after the rest of America is contaminated with brain eating amoeba from climate change. After spending $1 billion, they got bankrupt and no longer support your augmentation so half of your vision is just a 404 error because it can’t connect to its servers

haha I like the cyberware limit being because there's too much spyware on cyberware. That also jives with the premium expensive version taking up less cyber capacity.

You could have it so that your cyberware can be direct upgrades but periodically a thing pops up on your screen that you have to move off screen because the x to close it is greyed out or something.

The blackwater guys don't have to deal with this as they're defending the systems that cause this silliness. 20/80 on if your parent company shells out for a premium spine that helps you work though.

Unless you just want to make Pathologic 2077 (Cruelty Squad?), a key would be to make these things not actually hamper playing the game that much but would be soul-crushing to the player character. Want to see the sky? That's a premium feature. Your mother's face? We used AI to project our Default Face over it, but you can change the skin for a monthly fee. That lady trying to talk to you? She's an AR sales assistant, no one wants to be your friend.

If you want to be more brutal, you can also establish sympathetic characters and have them be fucked over.
