You know what's nice? She gets down to his level to talk to him.

I realized this hack early with kids. It's way less intimidating to them and they are way cooler about it.

I think I actually learned this from South Park in the episode where Cartman's Mom tries to find him a baby sitter that can handle him. Cartman emotionally traumatizes them off course but I loved that the show takes little moments to teach things like that.

Is that the episode with Cesar Milan? I'm not saying his techniques won't work for children, but...

Hell, I lay down on the ground all the time with my nephews, and it immediately triggered their lil gremlin brain to climb all over me as I’m the monster.

For fucks sake child, You don't swear in formal fucking settings.

[–] MalReynolds@piefed.social 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This, non ironically, teach them early there's places (actually settings is a better word, but a more advanced concept) it's OK and places it's not. Bonus points for teaching them that the less they use swearing the more useful it will be at combating pain and stress (scientific fact BTW), so use it when needed, but generally make your point more civilly.

I have a coworker who has ground rules like that for her kids. She says they're allowed to swear around her, provided that it isn't excessive. However, she instills boundaries on it. No swearing at school, with extended family (who might disagree with her choices), and some other rules. She emphasizes that the context is important, and as long as the kids respect those rules, they won't be in trouble for it.

When I was in college, I worked at a junior high, doing noon supervision and stuff. One day I was walking down the hall when a teacher came up with a 13-year-old girl and asked me to take her to the principal's office so her mom could bring her appropriate clothes. The girl was dressed pretty inappropriately for school, for sure, with a very revealing top and booty shorts.

So I take her there and I'm to wait to escort her back. The mom comes, and she's very apologetic. She said her daughter wasn't dressed like that when she left for school, she must have changed in the bathroom. She said she was very sorry and would make sure it didn't happen again, etc.

The thing is, the mom was basically naked, She had on a tiny skirt, a translucent shirt, and no bra. I could tell the principal was completely flustered and was trying to figure out something to say, but eventually just said thank you.

I can't censor myself, I'm gonna have to teach my nephew that we only say those words in front of uncle and not mom or teacher. I'm gonna get him in so much trouble
