Before I left nursing, the last facility I worked in gave us a rock because we're the emotional rock for our patients. I was solo-caring for 20-60 patients per night. Each of them paid £2000+ per month. The owner would brag about his collection of classic cars in his mountain chateau and drive a different one down to the Christmas party every year. The director of nursing would weaponise our empathy for our patients to guilt us into worse labour conditions and more dangerous patient care.
Now my bonus is a staff potluck because they aren't even willing to provide pizza. Anything I could make for a workplace that large costs at least twice my hourly wage, which hasn't risen in 3 years. I'm not being paid to cook it or attend the potluck, which my bosses will probably be paid to host.
