I find it impressive that the same hierarchical structure responsible for failures like Hillsborough, Windrush, and the Post Office scandal (amongst many others) has the hubris to tell us to trust it with this kind of invasive monitoring - it is really quite astonishing.

To the incompetent elites: make sure that your institutions are trustworthy enough before asking for the kind of data that would dramatically magnify the abuses of power, coverups and institutional failures that would be possible.

We need counter movements and fast. Lobbying is happening way too quick (Please think of the children).

What can we practically do now as an average joe?

I don't know. It is impossible to tell how effective anything could be against Billion and Trillion-aire companies that are intent on lobbying for our data.

I think join or create any counter-movement.

If you create one - maybe merge it with a larger counter-movement or vice versa.

Privacy might be a decent place to start - https://lemmyverse.net/communities?query=privacy

And unfortunately the platforms that create this and are lobbying might be most effective.

Open Rights Group generally have campaigns and actions you can take. Most the average person can do is raise awareness and write hopeful letters to MPs. https://www.openrightsgroup.org/

Most Brits will shrug their shoulders. They are docile and ill informed and dont want to engage on the continued erosion of their rights.

Ironic that their national propaganda is all about freedom from an overarching, Big Brother, state.

Tell me about it. The apathy among my friends is infuriating. And if you push it too hard you get labeled a conspiracy theorist nutter, even if you back up everything you say with facts, evidence, and credible sources.

Bread and circuses is really all it takes to control people. With a tiny bit of special economic privileges for those that start to think a bit too independently, to get them back in line and feeling superior to their peers.
