THE POLICE PROBLEM

4501 readers

The police problem is that police are policed by the police. Cops are accountable only to other cops, which is no accountability at all.

99.9999% of police brutality, corruption, and misconduct is never investigated, never punished, never makes the news, so it's not on this page.

When cops are caught breaking the law, they're investigated by other cops. Details are kept quiet, the officers' names are withheld from public knowledge, and what info is eventually released is only what police choose to release — often nothing at all.

When police are fired — which is all too rare — they leave with 'law enforcement experience' and can easily find work in another police department nearby. It's called "Wandering Cops."

When police testify under oath, they lie so frequently that cops themselves have a joking term for it: "testilying." Yet it's almost unheard of for police to be punished or prosecuted for perjury.

Cops can and do get away with lawlessness, because cops protect other cops. If they don't, they aren't cops for long.

The legal doctrine of "qualified immunity" renders police officers invulnerable to lawsuits for almost anything they do. In practice, getting past 'qualified immunity' is so unlikely, it makes headlines when it happens.

All this is a path to a police state.

In a free society, police must always be under serious and skeptical public oversight, with non-cops and non-cronies in charge, issuing genuine punishment when warranted.

Police who break the law must be prosecuted like anyone else, promptly fired if guilty, and barred from ever working in law-enforcement again.

    That's the solution.

Our definition of ‘cops’ is broad, and includes prison guards, probation officers, shitty DAs and judges, etc — anyone who has the authority to fuck over people’s lives, with minimal or no oversight.

RULES

Real-life decorum is expected. Please don't say things only a child or a jackass would say in person.

If you're here to support the police, you're trolling. Please exercise your right to remain silent.

Saying ~~cops~~ ANYONE should be killed lowers the IQ in any conversation. They're about killing people; we're not.

Please don't dox or post calls for harassment, vigilantism, tar & feather attacks, etc.

Please also abide by the instance rules.

It you've been banned but don't know why, check the moderator's log. If you feel you didn't deserve it, hey, I'm new at this and maybe you're right. Send a cordial PM, for a second chance.

best we can do is a mildly strong message on xitler, followed with an apology and self censuring 👍

Literally everyone could see this coming during the election year. Don't know what's more depressing, that a majority of Americans wanted this, that some Americans somehow couldn't see this coming, or that some thought "yes, this is worth it to teach the Democrats a lesson about picking uninspiring candidates with a slightly weird laugh."

That and the election results were manipulated. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nus5JA3Vh4

Tired of all this censoring of videos everywhere. If you can't see a woman's brains splattered over her car it's a little easier to forgive the ICE nazi who shot her, right?

[–] JoshuaFalken@lemmy.world 15 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Some get nauseated at the sight of blood, let alone brain matter. Obscuring the visual of a murdered person isn't a ploy to benefit the murderer. No one is watching this footage for the express purpose of seeing a dead body.

[–] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

I get your point, but people should feel sickened and nauseated by this. They need to see and know it’s real. The consequences of fascism need to be driven home viscerally, into their very cores. They need to see the real, uncensored world they created and are living in. Censorship of atrocity is a criminal injustice that feeds fascism, authoritarianism, and its support.

Renee Nicole Good is not Thích Quảng Đức. She didn’t choose this. She didn’t want to die, to leave her children behind, to widow her spouse, to bereave her family. She was murdered by bloodthirsty Republican fascists. It is up to us, the living, to make her unwilling sacrifice matter. Her murder should be a nauseating core memory for everyone in North America and the world, and a reminder of the horrifying consequences of allowing fascism to foment or attain power.

[–] JoshuaFalken@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

I get your point, but I don't need to see an open skull cavity to know a person was murdered.

I saw a person aim a firearm and pull the trigger, and the person they were aiming at died as a result. It doesn't matter where the bullet wound is when the result is the same.

If you die you can’t sue and the public doesn’t get to hear the victim. The family can sue, but it’s not the same. Seems to be pretty standard, even in CCW classes it’s often implied if not directly stated that if you shoot someone it’s better if they die so you don’t get sued by them.

That's some Israel style bullshit! 🤬

[–] Bloomcole@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Nope Shitraeli's don't shoot white people.
Usually american pigs don't do that either.
Black or brown people on the contrary get murdered daily, but who cared? Now it's also white people!
Worst hypocrites on the planet.

It's maddening to see the predictable full-throated lying about how she was a terrorist coming from the administration and its enabling news networks, knowing that their intended audience will nod and say 'seems legit'

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 weeks ago

Ice is terrorists

When this is over, and one day it will be over, all the worst in the US need their Neurenberg moment.

For the rest of the US, it should be rebuilt from scratch, Ina good way NOT for the rich anymore

[–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 7 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Call the real police and have them arrested for attempted murder.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

They can conscript local cops to their side pretty much at will. Because fascism.

Also, it's not like most cops wouldn't voluntarily side with them..

[–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 6 points 3 weeks ago

Maybe, maybe not, but at least then it would be on the record. Both that it happened (and possibly that it was ignored).

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

I promise the local cops aren't having to be begged.

Is the dude holding a paintball gun??

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

effectively yes. this is a riot control device called a pepper ball charger. it launches paintball shaped and sized balls filled with what amonts to tear gas. the idea is to pelt crowds with them causing respiratory distress. it is a good idea when dealing with police to be prepared to deal with this by having on you:

  • eye protection, the bigger the better
  • well fitting n95 or kn95 masks
  • water bottles
  • protective gloves for your skin

optionally you may want to have:

  • spray bottles with water
  • salene solution

there are other things you'll want in your kit, but these are the basics for dealing with pepper ball chargers

[–] BeardededSquidward@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

We cannot discuss freely what should be in that kit?

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 3 points 3 weeks ago

no. i just didn't want to distract from my core point about dealing with pepperball chargers and i already have a reputation on the threadiverse for being longwinded.

your protest kit should include:

Outfit

  • nondescript ball or running cap
  • eyewear, the bigger the better (splash goggles preferred)
  • a facial covering (ppe like kn95 on n95 preferred)
  • a neck scarf if you have tattoos on your neck
  • long sleeve moisture wicking non-descript shirt you can run in
  • supportive running gear (a sports bra if you have breasts that need supporting when running, running shorts or half tights no matter who you are, athletic underwear will also work, too)
  • long pants you can run in (this will go over your supportive running gear)
  • moisture wicking seamless socks (xotoes or injinji are extra recommended, though if toe socks aren't your thing i'd point you to darn tough, farm 2 feet, or balega)

Gloves

These are listed separately from the rest of the outfit as depending on the circumstances you find yourself in you may have different needs so you should bring all

  • nitrile gloves (for first aid)
  • mechanics gloves (for general protectiun)
  • warm gloves (if it's cold)
  • welding gloves (for removing and diffusing tear gas canisters)

Shoes

These are listed separately from the rest of the outfit as there's no general consensus for what is best, so you'll have to think about your own risk model and what you do at a protest to decide what makes sense for you. Whatever you pick, you need to pick something closed toed that you can spend at least 2 hours standing in, minimum

  • running shoes
  • training athletic shoes (aka gym shoes/cross trainers)
  • big man outdoor basketball shoes (though these are basically not found anywere but china anymore as big men at the top level of the sport have gotten shockingly nimble and americans don't play on outdoor courts anymore. i would look at New Balance's offerings if you go this route as they have some american market fresh foam outdoor court shoes)
  • tennis shoes (literal tennis shoes. for tennis.)
  • combat boots
  • work boots
  • steel toed shoes

Other equipment

  • a nondescript backpack you can run in (reebok's gym bags fit the bill excellently)
  • an umbrella (useful for deflecting riot control devices)
  • water bottles (plural)
  • first aid kit
  • a collapsible traffic cone
  • a tourniquet (assuming you have proper stop the bleed training)
  • a knife you feel comfortable carrying, smaller preferred, locking also preferred (i'd probably recommend the civivi baby banter 2)
  • antihistamines
  • menthol balm
  • lip balm
  • whistles (to use and distribute. learn the ICE alerting whistle blast patterns)

Some final notes

not everyone will be able to carry everything. you just need good coverage of all this stuff so that if anything happens someone nearby has what your group will need. go to a couple of protests and bring with you what you can that you believe would be the most useful. pay attention to what others have, but more importantly, keep an eye on what NO ONE has. the last couple of protests i've been to, NO ONE had anything to handle a tear gas canister and believed it was criminal to be prepared to diffuse one. so now i always make sure to bring welding gloves or oven mitts.

remember, the best way to keep yourself safe is to keep everyone safe. no one brings about change by waiting patiently for change to come. we live in dangerous times and the best way to make everyone safe is to bring about change. so you're going to have to step out and step up in this moment if you want to be safe. it will feel dangerous, but it's better to go out and resist fascism than it is to wait around and guarantee yourself a spot in the concentration camps.

as a final note: study ancient warfare. the police are trained to treat us like bands of savages. the sword and the spear are still the ultimate signifier of aristocratic power and people power. the modern day sword is the AR-15/AK-47 (depending on where in the world you are). it is complex, and it requires maintenance, and it requires training to use effectively. i'm not sure what the spear of liberation in our era is, but i'd keep an eye out for what it is, who's using it, and what it takes for a crowd to become effective with it.

as you study ancient warfare, pay particular attention to the jungle tactics employed in South America, Africa, and South East Asia as jungle and urban combat have a lot in common, and these tactics proved the most effective against the great European powers throughout the ages, even separating Haiti from Napoleonic France and preventing Vietnam from becoming an American Vassal state after France gave up on controlling them

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 5 points 3 weeks ago

Its full of pepper balls. They've been seen blasting peaceful protesters such as clergymen directly in the head with them on multiple times
