Fuck me that's a relief.

Ol' girl and boy left some snail poison (metaldehyde) out, blew over shit fell out and the resident magpie had a go at it apparently. I was livid.

Hadn't seen it for 2 days, but it just rocked up looking pretty worse for wear still kicking though and eating. Poor thing took a hit but seems okay.

Been feeding this thing for 20+ years and would be devastated if that's how it went out.

Phew (for now I hope).

You'll never guess how that tear in the fly screen happened...

No-one will ever know....

๐Ÿค”

is the answer in the room?

As Seagoon mentioned, replacement is pretty simple. There is also stronger fly wire mesh so cats canโ€™t cut through (as easily at least).

Hi all. Currently writing this from a heated toilet seat in a hostel in Kyoto (donโ€™t judge please). Tour has been jam-packed but also quite a bit of downtime. All Iโ€™ve done today is arrive in Kyoto, get some matcha and sit on this toilet seat and I feel bad about that. Donโ€™t know what to do for the rest of the afternoon so might get some ramen and then go for our walking tour. I feel kinda bad that I havenโ€™t really done much or what I wouldโ€™ve liked to do. Didnโ€™t go to Tokyo Tower, havenโ€™t looked around temples and shrines here yet, avoided Nishiki market because it is way too crowded, have had some shit food experiences (got dragged to a place that had gyoza but they were mid). The girls in the group are shopping at the moment and Iโ€™ve already done too much of that. Couldโ€™ve been a cool bonding experience but oh well.

Ok now for some good parts. The tour guide is awesome and kind of cute haha, have seen some cool shrines and temples, had cheap sushi, played some games with my fellow tour mates. Saw the shinkansens (is that the correct plural?) fly by.

I think Iโ€™ll go for some ramen now thatโ€™s nearby so Iโ€™m not hangry before we do another tour activity. Everyone wants to eat later but I think I might just have an early dinner. We have to leave at 6 tomorrow to go somewhere, so thatโ€™s that.

I just need to keep telling myself that Iโ€™m doing enough until I believe it!

Also I wonder if other hostels are like this around the world. This is a wonderful wooden box Iโ€™m sleeping in and everything is so clean.

[โ€“] SpinMeAround@aussie.zone 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

You are doing enough. This is your trip, you do as much as you want, as much as you can. Whatever you are doing: It is enough for you and that's all that matters.

PS fuck yeah for heated toilet seats.

Mate no-one sees everything on their list on a holiday. Whatever experience you have is the experience you are meant to have. Enjoy..

Sure sounds like your doing a lot to me! You don't have infinite energy/social energy. I always have quite a lot of quiet time on my trips cos that's just how I'm built

[โ€“] tone212_@aussie.zone 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

There's nothing worse than running around from place to place trying to see everything, that ain't a holiday. I've done that style before and all it achieves is getting home feeling exhausted. You see what you see, you do what you do, going with the flow holidays are the best. If you miss seeing certain things, all the more reason to go back.

[โ€“] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 3 points 2 months ago (2 children)

You can either take a relaxing holiday where you have time to think and really see and enjoy things

or be like me and rush around like a mad woman seeing at least 2 museums or historic sites a day. Then when home I have to lie in bed looking at the ceiling for a week because I fried my brain.

I know this sounds very fuckwit adjacent, but I decided to go veggo after what happened the other day with the cat.

I don't know why exactly tbh. I went to buy the usual chicken breast the other night from the supey, and I had a mild existential crisis.

I'm sort of annoyed, because I feel like absolute shit physically, but it's like a mental block.

It is what it is for the moment I guess.

[โ€“] SaneMartigan@aussie.zone 10 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

I've mostly gone veggo over the last few years. Ate meat over xmas as I was having multiple dinners with people and didn't want to put anyone out. Buddhist monks have a version where they'll accept meals with meat if offered but not get it for themselves.

[โ€“] Thornburywitch@aussie.zone 8 points 2 months ago (4 children)

This is the way. I salute you for doing the right thing.

I am so damned tired of catering 'special' meals for the born again whatevers. Keto or vegan or fat free or whatever. It really sucks when trying to cater for a group of people and you don't know if they do or do not have non-allergenic lines in the sand.

I'm more than willing to cater for allergy restrictions - lactose, gluten, nuts etc if I know about them in advance, but the rabid 'I'm a special little petal because I'm .......................' mob really piss me off.

Us humans are omnivores. Preferences are fine if you're catering for yourself, but taking the moral high ground over the presence or absence of meat and/or carbs and/or fodmaps just makes me see bright bright scarlet and reach for the baseball bat. With hobnails in it. And this applies double if someone rocks up unexpected like and then proceeds to criticise the menu because their personal preferences aren't allowed to override everyone else's preferences.

[โ€“] MeanElevator@aussie.zone 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

We have friends who have dietary restrictions and we always accommodate. I actually enjoy learning new dishes etc.

Our vegan friend brought their friend once (also vegan), so we prepped a few vegan dishes. Our friend never complains and always appreciates what we do. Their friend refused to eat because they could not be certain it was 100% vegan and if cookware was cleaned to their standards.

I may have been rude and told her that the grass outside is completely vegan.

She never came back, and our friend apologised.

[โ€“] Thornburywitch@aussie.zone 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ah yes, the born again vegan. My sympathies.

I have a theory that extreme dietary restrictions (not the allergy sort which is a quite other ballgame) functions as a sorting mechanism to reduce the stress of making choices. Given that we have so many choices of foodstuffs available to us, that some folks experience some form of stress is not all that surprising. I do think that this is one of the more obnoxious methods of doing so though. There's a power dynamic operating here too.

I am reminded of the folk who chalk climate change action messages on the completely separated bike path near me. Not on the road where the car drivers might see it, but on the bike path where most bike riders are already on board with climate change action. Doing the chalking probably makes them feel good, but it's not exactly targeting the real problem.

[โ€“] MeanElevator@aussie.zone 5 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I think some people just want to make something their complete identity and to feel morally superior. I get that people get passionate about some things, but being condescending towards others is not the way to win allies.

I did a veggo stint years ago to test it out for myself (and some health reasons). Went over to a relatives for a bbq and only ate salad, rice and other sides. Didn't complain, just went about my day.

The host noticed and made a massive thing out of it (there were like 20 people, so he wasn't cooking just for us) and kept pestering my why I'm going vegetarian. I was replying politely that it's a personal choice etc....he kept pushing, so finally I said I'm only vegetarian at his place, cause he cant grill for shit.

No more questions after that.

Just fyi fodmaps are a legit food intolerance, they have pretty painful effects on some people.

(However I donโ€™t demand to be catered to or glamorise it and due to the extent of my food intolerances donโ€™t eat with others)

[โ€“] Thornburywitch@aussie.zone 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

My apologies. I think I've met too many people who definitely were using a no-fodmap diet to basically Karen everyone in sight. I mean, how does one tell the difference between the genuine and the fake? Volume of rhetoric is not a good guide.

Stop being so wholesome ๐Ÿ˜

Honestly that's a great approach. I never refuse a meal, even though I can some mild reactions to some foods (nothing bad, just the winds and runs the next day).

If someone goes through the effort of preparing and sharing food with me, I won't refuse.

[โ€“] tombruzzo@aussie.zone 7 points 2 months ago

I think it's the right way to go. Maybe trying to do it all at once might be a bit much, but trending towards eating less meat is always better

[โ€“] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

You're not a fuckwit. You're a very caring human. Here's the thing, you can't just stop eating meat or you're gonna feel like shit. You gotta do it gradually. Get to know what your body needs and when it needs it. Going veggo means supplementing meat for other high protein foods especially if you are working out. There is nothing wrong with eating a small amount of meat at the start of your journey. Basically give yourself time to adjust.

Edit: Substituting not supplementing.

[โ€“] Catfish@aussie.zone 7 points 2 months ago

Brains are weird things. If that is what feels right to you for this point in time, so be it. You know it won't bring Kitty back, but an urge to give something up/cut your hair/wear certain colours/whatever is perfectly valid. ๐Ÿ–ค

[โ€“] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

so many hugs

it is a human trait that we identify with life, all life, that we value life

it's a cruel trick that we are omnivores, should eat some meat and yet we feel guilt at eating animal products

[โ€“] SpinMeAround@aussie.zone 9 points 2 months ago

I am having a lovely morning. Slept in, finished my latest Kdrama while still in bed, had a shower and didn't get dressed for an hour, had salty eggs on toast. Gym lined up for this afternoon when Boyo's up for it, then it'll likely be a crafty/puzzling sort of evening!

FRI-SLAYYY!

[โ€“] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Omg. Just realised YL got her her ears pieced. 2 in each ear. Pretty big deal for me cos Arabs get their daughters done at 6 months and I was like no fucking way I'm doing that to her considering I cried everytime she had injections. Wow. Spinning out.

Ps. I always thought it was her choice not mine.

[โ€“] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 3 points 2 months ago

Miss Seagoon asked me and I made sure she got hers done safely and with good studs, the second time too.

I was ๐Ÿ˜‘ when she got a tattoo in Barcelona on a school trip.

[โ€“] tombruzzo@aussie.zone 6 points 2 months ago

Had a bit of an awkward moment yesterday when I was helping someone with their computer. I realised the most recent document in their downloads was a position description and I also saw their resume pretty high up in the list.

If I can get a more private moment with her soon I'll let her know it's alright and her secret is safe with me

Home again. ๐Ÿ˜Š. Here with youse guys.

[โ€“] tone212_@aussie.zone 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

A client asked me earlier if I would be working over the weekend. I almost laughed on the phone.

Itโ€™s been a shit week. Cheers ๐Ÿบ

The clouds are floating along the horizon, just above the CBD, lit up by light pollution and travelling quite quickly, like some sort of weird cloud migration. I wonder where they will end up.

[โ€“] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I was watching them earlier out east and they were definitely in a hurry. They were heading with me back to Ballarat and then continued on, I think there might be a cloud convention in Adelaide this weekend they are all heading to.

I had a dream last night that I had come back from holidays and left my cpap machine behind and I was wandering all around town on a public holiday trying to buy a new one and being too scared to sleep.

I'm back home from a day in Melbourne. Travelling down the freeway in the dark always plays havoc with my perception of speed. Something about hurtling along into pitch blackness ahead can give me a feeling that I'm not moving and it's everything else coming towards me. I had the added challenge of wind pushing the van around to make for a tiring drive.

When I got home I found the pump in the water tank was cycling on and off constantly. I think I've found the cause, a minor leak in the tap timer, but having to go outside in the wind was not fun. I consoled myself with some apricot sorbet, and am now having cuddles with Miss Meow, Mr Woof and his collection of favourite toys on the couch.

[โ€“] tombruzzo@aussie.zone 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

And I've figured out why those work pants I got were so cheap. The front pockets are kind of like jeans pockets where they're on the inside and they're really tight, and the one side pocket they have is only attached halfway down, the bottom half just flaps around freely.

These things would be annoying for someone on a job site that's actually using the pockets on their trousers constantly, but it's fine for me just in an office all day. The only annoying thing is that leg pocket can flap around when pedalling on the bike.

[โ€“] StudChud@aussie.zone 4 points 2 months ago (2 children)

The pairs of jeans I bought the other day have bum pockets but the front ones are fake ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

On the bright side, the dress I bought has pockets (!!!!!!) which I didn't realise until after I bought it home.

You could get some thread and sew the bottom on the pocket so it doesn't flap about and make it usable

[โ€“] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 3 points 2 months ago

I have a pair of jeans like that, it's really annoying.
