General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

God I'm so tired of America, I wish Starmer would stop sucking up to Trump and I despise the fact Farage is so popular considering how transparently he wants to turn us into a subservient vassal.

Why the UK? They left the EU, and have nothing to do with Greenland, right?

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 3 points 6 days ago

Still a member of NATO though.

[–] mannycalavera@feddit.uk 3 points 6 days ago

Do you think Trump realises this? We're just filthy Europeans to him.

[–] scratchee@feddit.uk 2 points 6 days ago

UK sent some troops to Greenland (along with the other European countries) to discourage the US from any bad ideas

Nothing will save him from the revelations of the Epstein pedo files.

[–] mannycalavera@feddit.uk 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yet he doesn't seem to be affected by the memes online about the Epstein Files. He is still acting like a dictator and getting praised for it.

Not quite sure what the US needs to do to get out of his grip but I suspect they've lost already. They're just here for the ride.

I think these things take years and years. All of the bad stuff we're seeing online is happening in small pockets of a massive country and most people don't care until it's on their doorstep. When we learn about wars or coups or I surections etc it's usually decades of struggles condensed.

Stop trading with the US. They need us more than we need them.

This stinks of someone who'd feeling super weak.

I think making a fuss about it would be the wrong approach. We should just calmly station more troops in Greenland, quietly impose retaliatory tariffs, and then go about our business. That would pile up even more pressure on Trump without the noise he's craving to distract people from all his other troubles.

Station more troops where? Its ruddy cold there at the moment, and most of the military infrastructure is American.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 1 points 6 days ago

Most of it is in fact NATO which of course is the point.

[–] slothrop@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Individual EU countries can't be tariffed.

[–] fakeman_pretendname@feddit.uk 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

In theory, neither can islands with zero human population and zero trade, but that didn't stop him tariffing those penguins last time, did it?

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

I'm pretty sure he also imposed a tariff on a small island off the coast of Australia, that in fact part of Australia. Which is rather like someone else imposing tariffs on the United States and also Manhattan.

[–] BrettPilkington@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

He does a lot of things that can't be done and says a lot more than that. I don't think his reality is the same as the rest of ours.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 2 points 1 week ago

They can, just not by each other.

[–] cman6@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Can I just check I haven't misunderstood... Aren't these tariffs charged to companies / individuals in the US for importing goods from other countries? ie. it's an import tax?

[–] HermitBee@feddit.uk 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yes, Trump has no power to impose any other tariffs. But the way he speaks about it deliberately gives the impression that it's the other countries who are paying.

[–] cman6@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

Great, thank you! I thought I was losing my mind. It sounds so much like other countries are somehow paying

[–] mannycalavera@feddit.uk 2 points 1 week ago

That's correct. It's one way in which governments can change the behaviour of it's citizens. Do that enough and the people will find an alternative and countries exporting to the US will lose out.

Whether that will happen with these tariffs who knows.

[–] DakRalter@thelemmy.club 1 points 1 week ago

Please let there be a 200% tariff on Huffy bikes imported to the UK. Those things deserve to die in a fire.

[–] HankPecker@hexbear.net -1 points 1 week ago

It's okay guys, my goat Kier just sent our strongest military officer (singular) to Greenland, the US empire now has no choice but to back off!

(We're so fucking cooked)
