Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

So this is what we're doing on Lemmy today: posting completely random Star Trek clips

Data is tied for best character on the show

[–] usernamefactory@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Tied with all the other characters.

[–] gustofwind@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I will boldly go where others might not

Data and Worf are tied for best character

Everyone else are great but don’t have the same depth of character

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Data beats Worf as the better Dad.

[–] ragas@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 days ago

Worf was pretty bland in the first episodes.

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Screw that noise. Gimme that sexy TR-116 Sniper.

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Might that also have something to do with the person most known for wielding said rifle?

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

Science officer Chulak?

Topic title got me thinking. You could probably make a functional phaser, but it wouldn't hurt anybody (unless you shot them in the eye).

Look up those green lasers on Amazon. Let me warn you again, these things are NOT toys. They functionally go for about 2-5 miles and if you point one at an aircraft, you could be looking at federal charges. Red laser pointer toys you entertain cats with will not reach most aircraft. The green ones will reach all of them. DON'T DO IT! I'm not fucking kidding here.

Anyway, get your green laser, and consider some kind of module to increase the battery. I only say this because you'll definitely have room. I would then look to some kind of mechanism that presses the button and then lets up after a few seconds. Build everything into a 3D printed phaser. Sand it down, and paint it. Optionally, work in other parts that won't do anything. The idea is, you point the phaser at someone (NOT THEIR FACE) and push the button, and the laser comes on for like 3 seconds and then goes away.

You might be able to put a lens on it which weakens the laser. But the cool thing about those green lasers is you can actually see the entire beam. So, it would work whereas using a red laser pointing toy would just put a dot on something.

Lasers are cool, I'm shopping for semi-automatic 12 gauge shotguns.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Something of a kinetic laser

A 20g is going to be easier to control on subsequent shots, and shells are cheaper.

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This is not my experience. The 12ga shotguns control the recoil a lot more and although they weigh a bit more, are easier for smaller people to shoot.

Ofcourse, if you are going to buy something you should try to rent it at a range and try it first. Only buy something you are comfortable with.

I decided on a Beretta a300

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

A 20g is smaller than a 12g, I don't understand how a 12 is going to control kick more?

Edit: Google says heavier gun=less kick with a similar payload. I typically only use 2.5in shells in my 20 and yea it still kicks like a horse. I don't own a 12g but figured bigger round=more kick, but there's more to it than that, including how choked the barrel is and mine is full choke

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Yes it is. So are the guns themselves. What my family experienced is that the larger 12 ga reduced the recoil a lot more than the smaller 20 ga gun. I suggest you shoot 2 mossbergs (one that's 20ga and then one that's 12ga) and see for yourself.

Also of note is that there are greater ammo options for a 12ga.

I'm not an expert however, I literally just got into guns a year ago after I asked myself what would Picard do, and I realized he would be armed.

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago

Picard would be armed.

All of my firearms have been inherited/gifts, I'm not hot on purchasing more. The shotgun is a 20g single, great for birds and some asshole coming up the walk. After that it's a 10/22 with 5 10rnd mags and a 25. I know I know .22lr isn't a lot. I'm banking on them being dissuaded from continuing by the knowledge that I can put a lot of metal down range for a few minutes if need be.

[–] brognak@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 days ago

If you aren't aware of him, you should look up StyroPyro on YouTube, I have a ruby made with a handheld laser.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Ultraviolet or infrared lasers are far more dangerous because they can't be seen by the baked eye but can still do damage to the eye. They can be.seen with cameras though.

Okay, but then it wouldn't work like you want a phaser to. You wouldn't get that satisfying laser beam.

Infrared can damage the eyes? What TV remotes use? Or you mean like a more powerful version?

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

It'll definitely bake your eyes
