The winter chills are settling in, and its getting to my bones.

I currently have these old polyester leggings, but they're quite bad at insulation (who would guess a plastic bag is bad at), and they aren't the greatest sensory experience.

I want to upgrade to something of better quality, made of wool / fleece instead for the winter.

I typically don't like reusing leggings, so it would have to be cost-effective enough to buy 8 of them.

What do you recommend?

I don't know how I ever lived through winters without my Merino leggings. They are warm and comfy. But they were not in a price category I would buy 8 of them.

It's neither necessary nor recommended to wash wool that often. For me it's enough to air them out on my balcony over night and only wash them after several wears, so I'm good with 2. But if that doesnt feel right to you, them maybe wool would not be the best choice for you (or you'll have to replace the leggings more often).

Same here! I love my Merino leggings and they work well even in -14C degrees and windy weather. They are also very durable, unlike any polyester and cotton leggings I've ever had.

Do you wear the merino leggings against your skin? Unpleasant scratcheyness is concern for most other breeds of wool, meaning you need two layers of leggings to wear the leggings.

I do think its better to get a few quality garments that you care for, rather than many cheap ones. Washing causes most of the wear on garments.

Yes, I do. I sometimes have problems with other types of wool, especially around my neck and collarbones (I can wear wool socks however). But I never had any issues with my merino leggings or shirts. Absolutely no scratchyness for me. Your mileage may vary though.

I have some fleece-lined leggings that are incredibly warm, though they do start to itch after a few hours (I don’t shave my legs, so YMMV). They look less like standalone leggings than they do like really thick tights, but I mostly wear them under pants, so that’s not a big deal for my uses

Sadly don't have experience with this item.

I have some wool leggings, and because they're itchy I wear them layered over my other leggings first (so it's cotton or poly on the skin, then wool over that).

I don't think you're going to find good wool leggings or wool baselayers that are cheap enough to buy 8 of them. I own 1 - 2 of them and just re-use them (which is easier to justify when you use the cotton layer as the base). I do the same with the top layers, I wear a thin cotton base layer, then layer the wool base layer on top of it. This prevents itching and makes it easier to re-use without washing. I also only have 2 wool top base layers.

Lined leggings are going to be more durable and thus more expensive. I have several since they're durable enough to wash.

For example, I just wore these ones I got from Amazon yesterday and they cost around $15 are warm and comfortable, but not very breathable if you get hot and sweat easily which I don't. I'm always cold. Also i t wasnt windy and I wore them under a long dress, so not sure they'll be as warm as nice wool lined ones. They look sheer, but are actually just lined with nude fabric under black sheer tights. I dont know if I'd buy 8 and only wear once, but they are inexpensive for what they are, so they won't last as long as expensive ones, but should last several wearings if they aren't abused.
