Off to a horrible start

That's the neat part they aren't building any bike lanes where I live.

Or the bike lane is basically marking the dooring zone of parking lots.

My favourite one is when some clueless dipshit shouts it out of their window when it's a footpath not a cycle path, and cycling on it would be illegal.

Nuh uh. When the bike lane is unsafe, I'm taking the sidewalk. No sidewalk? Take the road, laws be damned.

[–] pageflight@piefed.social 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Also, typically the laws support taking the lane based on your safety assessment.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but, as per my previous comment, I don't give a fuck about """the law""".

Got anything clever for the multiple cars I find parked in the bicycle lane on my < 2mi daily ride?

[–] Naich@lemmings.world 4 points 1 day ago

In the UK it's entirely up to the cyclist whether they want to use the cycle lane or not. Good job too, as many of them are fucking lethal, basically trapping the cyclist in the shittiest part of the road while giving drivers the impression that they can pass as close as they like. Want to avoid that wheel-breaking pothole? No. Stay in your shit-filled cratered lane and take your chances or you will be taken out by that car zooming past 3 inches from your elbow.

Taking the lane is also encouraged in the Highway Code when it would be dangerous to let a car overtake.

If you haven't already tried biking your commute, keep a close eye on the bike lane as you're driving. How many delivery trucks or other motor vehicles are driving or stopped in it? Is it clear if gravel, sand, trash, and snow? How would a cyclist make a left turn, and would they have to wait through an extra light cycle? Any potholes, runners, folks with grocery carts collecting aluminum?

Of course it isn't free of trash. It has cyclists in it.

Unfortunately, vehicular cycling is actually a real thing. And it seems to be making life worse for people who bike normally.

Vehicular cycling is a bad idea in the General case, i.e when used to advocate against protected bicycle infrastructure, but sometimes it's necessary for me on account of the very limited bike lane width. It's not fair to the slower cyclists to have to contend with me riding at twice their speed. Since I'm also riding at the speed limit for the road, I don't think it's unfair to the drivers either.

[–] FQQD@lemmy.ohaa.xyz 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah, there are of course legit use cases for driving on the road, such as this one - it's just that some vehicular cycling advocates are not improving the general situation for cyclists.

[–] VibeSurgeon@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

Definitely. It's set back progress decades, sadly.

Looks like most of them found your post too. There are dozens of them and man are they pissy.
