I uninstalled Discord yesterday.

Oh, good. Discord's age verification rollout has ties to Palantir's co-founder Peter Thiel. That's the nail in the coffin for me. It'll be Matrix only from me from now on!

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 18 points 8 hours ago

And the new Discord CEO is Israeli

[–] TerdFerguson@lemmy.world 30 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

Wooooowwwww. It’s being used for exactly what I said it would be~

I know a lot if us are not even surprised in the least, but i hope some of the head-in-the-sand naysayer motherfuckers wake up and learn something.

When they say the images wont leave your computer. Its because they converted it to facial geometry. They dont want the images because they take too much storage.

When they say they will delete it after processing, processing includes sending a copy to whoever else theyve agreed to share it with. Palantir, im sure here, maybe through an intermediary data broker.

I deleted my discord account immediately when the news of this face-check-age-check broke

Thank you, that was just very useful. Deleted. One more gone.

More and more things we give away because parents can't be bothered to parent their kids. This is exactly how they win by slowly chiseling away our perceived rights until there is nothing left. I'll certainly not participate in any Internet that requires me to shed my anonymity.

[–] hamFoilHat@lemmy.world 29 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Okay, this has nothing to do with parents parenting their kids. It has 100% to do with the perception that the internet is dangerous and using that perception to collect information about people. That's what they want, to put a name and face to all interpersonal interactions so they can use them for marketing and law enforcement.

Social media converted half of Americans into nazis in about a decade and elected Trump twice. If you don’t think the internet is dangerous, you’re not paying attention.

That said, it’s easy to keep kids off instagram and TikTok without spying. Simply require devices to which children have access to be sold without access to half the internet. Problem solved.

how would you that? most children aren't buying their phones by themselves

[–] yeahiknow3@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

Pass the law. Word it properly. Let the market do something useful for once and accommodate the new rules.

[–] CainTheLongshot@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Some folks would say half of America had always been either Nazis or Nazi sympathizers. But we just call those later groups, Nazis.

[–] yeahiknow3@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

30% of humans were already evil. But we didn’t have criminal pedophile cabals running the country. Something changed. You know what that is.

Anybody here who have a good recommendation for something as simple as Discord with audio lobbies? I see all these recommendations for alternative platforms and software which mostly focus on the community/forum aspect of Discord, and not the things Discord was meant to be used for: talking with your buddies while gaming.

[–] squaresinger@lemmy.world 1 points 19 minutes ago

Teamspeak. It's old and it's still good. Uses no resources at all compared to Discord and there are thousands of free servers if you don't want to host one yourself.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago

I used Mumble before Discord was a thing, but the self-hosting a server thing got a bit old, and required me to keep my PC on at all times in case my buddies wanted to play games and chat when I wasn't available.

[–] Yttra@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Stoat has vc, but I haven't had the chance to try it with someone else yet.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Any reason why anything not self hosted won't be subject to enshittification down the line? 🥲

[–] Clasm@ttrpg.network 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Text has been a little sluggish with my tests. Might be due to influx of users, though.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

As long as the voice is solid, I'm good with that.

Why is he obsessed with Antichrist? He is gay. Does he think the extreme Christians will think he is one of them?

[–] BanMe@lemmy.world 11 points 9 hours ago

Once you have a few million dollars, you aren't gay or straight anymore. You're just a person who fucks people. There is no community within him, there is no care or compassion for others, the queer community rejects him, he can't be one of us even in name. He's just a billionaire who fucks men. And they're OK with anything that comes after "billionaire" by nature.

[–] vala@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 13 hours ago

He's a charlatan.

[–] Patrikvo@lemmy.world 82 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

So age verfication to protect the children or to create a menu?

[–] DarkSideOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

It’s to “Protect the children™”

[–] Lag@piefed.world 12 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

To scramble and divide any organized communication just like they did Twitter and other social media.

[–] Bruhh@lemmy.world 6 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

They've been telling us "It's for the kids" but it all makes sense now

[–] First_Thunder@lemmy.zip 56 points 19 hours ago (2 children)
[–] badgermurphy@lemmy.world 28 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

It also seems he can't shut up about the Antichrist, too.

Spoilers: Its always whoever he doesn't like that's been in the news the most this week.

[–] chaogomu@lemmy.world 16 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

A note to that, Thiel always says it's someone who expresses empathy, compassion, or other similar sentiment.

[–] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 6 points 15 hours ago

Yes, the ""Sin"" of empathy.

There are people who've wrapped 'anti-woke' in bible verses and claim that empathy can be a sin.

[–] redsand@infosec.pub 14 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Because it's him? That would explain all the kids he raped with Epstein and Maxwell. And being friends with Elon Musk.

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 10 points 15 hours ago (2 children)
[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

They literally wear his symbol on their forehead with the maga hats.

So no, not only can they not spot the antichrist, they actively embrace him.

[–] redsand@infosec.pub 5 points 15 hours ago

I'm not really religious but that piece of reading has bothered me for years. I've yet to spot watchers in sack cloth though

[–] BoiLudens@lemmy.world 23 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

Making the move to matrix, and hey it isn’t half bad. Convenience is a hard habit to break

[–] Shaggy1050@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

My friends and I are trying to. I'm having a heck of a time getting the server going though. Do you know of any good guides? Everything I'm seeing is from years ago and when I follow the guides i keep encountering errors.

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 2 points 13 hours ago

Convenience as in "it's what I've always used and I understand it" or are you noticing some awkward aspects?

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 4 points 13 hours ago

AI is fascism.

anyone who supports AI is a Mitläufer.

[–] Paranoidfactoid@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago

The Panoptocon's actual architect was Bentham, but OK.
