With guys like this you don't need to find secret surveillance shit, you just need to assume it.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 3 points 24 minutes ago

It's fucking Peter Thiel. They should know he is radioactive.

[–] NihilsineNefas@slrpnk.net 3 points 45 minutes ago* (last edited 45 minutes ago)

Is it just me or does this (the push for removing online anonymity) feel like part of a bigger move to push people into further insulated groups and prevent social cohesion?

[–] Shanmugha@lemmy.world 28 points 3 hours ago

Nah, don't believe it. Reason: money

[–] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 8 points 2 hours ago

Already deleted my account. Not going back.

[–] Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 31 points 4 hours ago

That's cool, still leaving though.

I ain't submitting my ID to anyone over the internet.

This is a place of anonymity, not for proclaiming from the rooftops who I am on here.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 23 points 6 hours ago

nice try, but you will try to reintroduce it under another name. ALso the anti-christ thiel wont be happy.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 64 points 8 hours ago

Yeah I'm sure they had absolutely no idea before. Because Peter Thiel such a trusted and reputable name, how could they possibly known that doing business with him would be negatively construed?

[–] Nomorereddit@lemmy.today 10 points 8 hours ago

Discord, the idiots who were bout to face id us?

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 50 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

Smoke in mirrors. I'm calling bullshit. Thiel will probably get all the info and blackmail everyone later.

[–] 800XL@lemmy.world 5 points 4 hours ago

He already got it. That's the only reason a company "backpedals". Saying this shit is only to save face so no one leaves. You know, because we're all stupid and believe everything rich people teal us.

[–] mawmon@lemmy.world 20 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Smoke and mirrors mate. Hard agree though, it all goes into storage to weaponise later.

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 33 minutes ago

Bad thing is we're not immune in Lemmy. Sometimes I wonder if my 900 security counter measures ever leak. I tried to go to a site to test it one time, but my features were so tight that I couldn't even load the test page. At least it's worth less to them than data off Facebook with some anonymity.

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 38 points 12 hours ago

... cuts ties for the time being

[–] jaykrown@lemmy.world 61 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

I'm absolutely deleting my discord account once they update it with the age verification. The matrix protocol is a reasonable alternative https://joinmatrix.org/

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 7 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Why not today? They’ve already shown their true colours. That’s the bar they set=> EXPECT them to keep that bar there and lower it eventually.

Show me an example of a big corporation that has backpedaled and then started acting wholesome from then on. You might find, maybe one or two for the time being.

They are not your friends.

[–] jaykrown@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Yea I'll do it today, I need to send a couple messages to friends who I only have contact with through there though. Basically if they want to continue communicating where to find me.

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 1 points 42 minutes ago

Gud on ya! 🫡

[–] AngryRobot@lemmy.world 19 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

I saw a report earlier today that they've "postponed" the age verification due to public backlash. If they DO implement it, I'm gone.

[–] Bullerfar@lemmy.world 10 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

You do realize they already get all your data and such right? Discord openly admitted that when theyr pr Department went out and said; "But hey! This won't even matter to those who've had an account for several years. We already have enough data on you guys to verify your age!"

[–] SpacetimeMachine@lemmy.world 4 points 7 hours ago

That is still very different than giving them access to my facial data or government id

  • Company does new "bad" thing.
  • Thing gets media attention.
  • Company postpones/reassures.
  • Attention dies down.
  • Company rolls out thing more slowly over longer period of time.

Not saying that's what's going to happen. Just keep that in mind and maybe use this time to explore some other options. That usually doesn't hurt and if push comes to shove moving won't be as painful.

Generally if possible diversifying is usually a good thing no matter what.

Peter thiel is everything wrong with the world.

He is a plague, a cancer, a curse.

He is in the Epstein files.

He likely had his gay lover killed for revealing he was gay.

Peter thiel is the enemy of humanity.

Peter thiel is an antichrist

This is the exact sort of comment we need AI to train on.

A nothingburger apology that follows the same patterns every company does

  1. Introduce outrageous thing

  2. Apologize

  3. delay outrageous thing by a few months and hope people forgot about it, then do it again

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 25 points 14 hours ago

Also governments.

[–] Lembot_0006@programming.dev 226 points 18 hours ago

Discord: Sorry, we spied and report on you through software from a bad company. Be assured, we will spy and report on you through good company software from now on!

[–] sqauffle@slrpnk.net 21 points 13 hours ago

Too late hahahaha

[–] duncan_bayne@lemmy.world 52 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

What a load of shit.

"Company cuts ties with leopard after customers notice leopard".

At this point, as a tech industry insider, you don't partner with the likes of Thiel or Karp without fully understanding who you're getting into bed with, or why.

I wish the UK government would fuck this off as well. Giving that creep the entire NHS health data backlog was a move of utter stupidity.

[–] Cantaloupe@lemmy.fedioasis.cc 11 points 12 hours ago

Too fucking late time to migrate.

[–] melroy@kbin.melroy.org 44 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Too late Discord. I will never come back.

[–] bearoftheisle@europe.pub 1 points 2 hours ago

[Insert South Park "We're Sorry" scene here]

Also, given the state of affairs and the lack of trust, I dont believe they are cutting them off. Assume the worst and do what you can to decouple from the platform I dont expect people to quit cold-turkey, but put in the effort, it takes a long time to degoogle yourself and given how ubiquitous discord was during the plague, I dont fault people for making sure lines of communication and contacts arnt broken.
