That refers to funny image macros and means that generally videos and screenshots are not allowed. 0.5.1 Style tip about abbreviations and short forms
When writing stuff like "lol" and "iirc", it's a good idea to try and replace those with their all caps counterpart
- ofc => OFC
- af = AF
- ok => OK
- lol => LOL
- bc => BC
- bs => BS
- iirc => IIRC
- cia => CIA
- nato => Nato (you don't spell it when talking, right?)
- usa => USA
- prc => PRC
- etc.
Why? Because otherwise (AFAIK), screen readers will try to read them out as actually words instead of spelling them

We must constructively learn from their mistakes, while acknowledging their achievements and recognizing when they have strayed away from socialist principles.

@Five@slrpnk.net, you're an admin in slrpnk. Would you care to explain? Do you think genAI is a solarpunk-compatible technology? Did you not notice it's AI? Or something else?
I reposted it from Reddit. I'm not excited about sharing images generated by AI, and I don't think that it's SLRPNK compatible technology. How can you tell it's genAI?

Edit: I don't generally endorse using "AI", but misinformation from "AI" generated images and video will fuck the planet even faster than running the "AI" used to detect generated images and videos, so I think people should be aware of the tools.
Also if you must use it, use open source models and either run them yourself on your own GPU, or use something like AI horde where others use their own GPUs.
if it's got that suspiciously yellow tint to it that a load of ai images have, & no artist is attributed to it, i by default assume it's ai these days

Don't recommend that community, it's full of trolls who outright harass people members on our instance, many people have already been harassed by them (me included) including literal death threats. People can have their own opinions, and for the record I agree with them that corporate AI companies suck and are doing more harm than good, even for the AI space and AI development in general, but brigading spaces, harassing moderators, or even impersonating mods and users who use AI is not the way to fight the problems related to corporate AI or misuse of AI in general.
Idk what the members of that community do and I don't support harassment let alone fucking death threats. But there is no ethical use of AI.
I'll shed some light on the nature of the harassment, they were making fun of one of the mods for being a recovering alcoholic (they literally encouraged that mod to get drunk and kill themselves), they impersonated the mod and acted stupid. They made a lot of spam accounts and posted porn in threads discussing the mod. Many people also harassed me as well in my DMs (porn, death threats, the works). Absolutely inexcusable.
But there is no ethical use of AI.
Let's be very clear here. dbzer0 is anti intellectual property. We do not support IP laws or arguments here, they and their apologists are seen as liberal garbage here. So any of the arguments about plagarism or "sTEAliNg aRT" are not only invalid arguments here, they are not respected by this community, and people here will laugh at you (and probably ban you) for spouting such liberal nonsense in a leftist space. It is baffling how many people come to dbzer0 with these arguments when it's written on our front page that we are leftist-anarchist and fundamentally against intellectual proptery.
Arguments about power and water usage are valid concerns if we're talking about openAI or datacenters. However on dbzer0 people almost exclusively use their own hardware (their own GPUs) or they use computing power from volunteers. That's to say they use consumer hardware. So the environment arguments don't work here. Unless you also believe gaming is hurting the environment, and that we should all conserve our computing power.
Me, @db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com and many others have had these arguments often, and no one has presented any other compelling reasons beyond:
- Intellectual Property
- Environmental Harm associated with Datacenters
- Shitty AI corporate practices
I recommend checking through this channels videos, there they dissect with examples the various clues available to recognize generated content, think of watching their content as an immunization against falling for slop

To distract from our ~~incompetence~~ Epstein files
The guy did a coup and suffered no consequences, and showed everyone that he is above the law over anv over, why do you think he fears consequences for the Epstein files?
Not everything is a distraction.
His goal is to sow and spread chaos at all times. Distraction and fatigue is part of the design
There's a long list of reasons why he attacked Iran and most of them are not distractions (although I do agree one of the reasons is to distract from domestic crises in general, Epstein being the least of his domestic worries atm, he's above the law already).
This is a textbook US imperialist move, coordinated with Israel, to address imperial issues that existed long before the Epstein files were a mainstream story: maintaining US hegemony and securing israeli military dominance in the region, preventing Iran from becoming a regional pole aligned with Cihna, trying to open iranian markets to western capital, and projecting military strength to make the military-industrial complex side of his political supporters happy. Those goals have been discussed in US policy circles for decades, and happened now not because of the Epstein files, but because of the timing: Iran is going through an internal political crisis that is ripe for imperial exploitation.
If anything, seeing a distraction from the Epstein files in everything Trump does is the distraction from what he is actually doing.
Flattening the analysis to "Epstein distraction" when the topic actually matters to leftist internationalism around the world is some lazy memerot-brained liberal shit straight out of Gavin Newsom's twitter. He doesn't need to bother with distractions thanks to you and others who are doing it for him by seeing Epstein in everything. The mountain hidden behind the Epstein files hill is that he seized so much power that he doesn't need to fear justice anymore, and is now trying to mess with future elections to keep that power. People are in denial about how much control he has already seized. Epstein files won't matter until he is removed from power.
