Cool but please just use Signal if you can. I'm priviledged enough to have got my best friend to use it with me so far.

News and information from Europe πͺπΊ
(Current banner: La Mancha, Spain. Feel free to post submissions for banner images.)
Rules (2024-08-30)
- This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
- No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
- Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
- No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
- Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
- If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
- Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
- Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
- No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
- Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.
(This list may get expanded as necessary.)
Posts that link to the following sources will be removed
- on any topic: Al Mayadeen, brusselssignal:eu, citjourno:com, europesays:com, Breitbart, Daily Caller, Fox, GB News, geo-trends:eu, news-pravda:com, OAN, RT, sociable:co, any AI slop sites (when in doubt please look for a credible imprint/about page), change:org (for privacy reasons), archive:is,ph,today (their JS DDoS websites)
- on Middle-East topics: Al Jazeera
- on Hungary: Euronews
Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com
(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)
Ban lengths, etc.
We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.
If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.
If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org
This kind of interoperability is really useful for getting people to switch over. The only reason to use these apps is to talk to other people, so the network effect has a heavy hand on people's decisions
I ditched WhatsApp some weeks ago and have most of my friend on Signal now, even my 70+ parents. I still have some people on Telegram though
What do you think of Telegram? I only really heard bad things but I'm trying to stay open-minded about it
https://lemmy.ml/post/43787973
Ugh... ignore the .ml part π€’
Yeaaa I saw that, that's exactly why I'm not very fond of telegram
The only choice so far is Birdychat, which is business related. I'm afraid Signal would be hard to integrate due to its encrypted nature (and the fact that it's not European). I hope Threema will follow.
Unfortuantely I only found this German heise news from Feb 2024. But both Signal and Threema won't lower their security and privacy standards to be interoperable with WhatsApp.
I also have haiket allowed.
No FOSS options.
There is still lots of work needed on this regulation. You still need to install WhatsApp to be able to use other apps, and then encryption (however safe it is in the first place is not a topic of this post) is weakened or completely broken. Second as of now only very few fringe messaging apps support it.
I donβt get why Olvid isnβt more popularβitβs end-to-end encrypted and doesnβt even leak metadata
Is there also a way to chat with people using WhatsApp without me installing an Meta app on my phone?
Xmpp and Matrix have bridges that only require to install WhatsApp on some old phone and turn it on once every few weeks to renew the connection.
This works independent of what is mentioned in the OP's link.
Heh, I used to run Whatapp in an Android VM for use in a Matrix bridge. I got my phone number banned in about a week or so. So I guess it's really important to use an actual phone.
That was years ago and I used that to get my family to install Element, so it still ended well.
I think itβs called Birdychat or something
I don't imagine many people would opt in to this. Even if you bother to click on the notification for setting it up, the multi-step wizard warns you enough times about the risks of enabling this feature that most would just leave it disabled.
That's where you and me come in. Tell people about it!
is there a list of 3rd party apps? being in the 'wrong region' and the linked page just says: "Chats with third-party apps are only available in select regions and may not be available to you." Changing my VPN to an EU country gives me the DMA version which still doesn't state which apps they have actually integrated with.
~~Which regions?~~ Had to update WhatsApp first
Hmmm i wonder π€ probably maybe the EU?
What's the point, i can use other apps (signal for example) in whatsapp ? If so, why wouldn't i just use the other messaging app
