Self Improvement

499 readers
1 users here now

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.

I got a real interview tomorrow for a minimum wage position to have an income again, and I have an interview in about two weeks for an actual position that might get me out of my parents basement permanently.

Also I have a self imposed challenge to complete the FreeCodeCamp’s Python course.

Good luck with the interviews! rat-salute

You got this unity

  • ankle still fucking me up. spoke with buddy's wife who is training as a PT -- turns out inflammation is good, actually (really, that's the body healing itself or something) and therefore that all the Ibuprofen i've been eating, all the icing, all the raising of my leg over my heart, is unhelpful WRT quicker recovery (it could be beneficial if the inflammation was causing too much pain i guess). also spoke with running buds who recommended heel raisers for the shoes -- purchased those and restarted running this week, going out every other day for about 5k. feels much better on my achilles but i can feel the forces now spread to my knees and hips; hopefully these don't break down now as well.

also finding and executing a rehab program i found online, though it will probably behoove me to reach out to find a PT this week -- i imagine it might take forever to actually get in and get seen so i should start the process now. rehab exercises probably seem helpful, though perhaps i am over doing things as my lower leg is now frequently feeling very tender. also, interestingly, the rehab site recommends the heel raisers as only a temporary measure, and suggests that continued use could lead to a shortening of the tendon and ultimately make things worse, in as little as a week (?? i "raised" this concern with running bud and he thought that sounded foolish and i sort of am of the same intuition -- i run in low drop shoes, so if anything the raisers might make my shoes constructively mid or high drop, but i wouldn't see why that wouldn't be the same as running in such shoes, which most people do, and which many find success in).

perhaps i'll also drop by the running shoe store, for advices/more intentionally rec'd orthotics or even a more traditional, cushioned shoe.

  • reading group goes on. it's tedious. homer's battle scenes, which might, in totality, have a kind of stylistic merit, and a brutal rhythm, are frequently interminable, and the outcomes always telegraphed and mostly uninteresting, other than conveying a sense of caprice and unfairness. these are punctuated though with some great moments: ingenious similes (words fall from Odysseus's mouth like snowflakes, hector moves as quick as a mountain; (but how many times is a warrior like a cornered lion or boar, or a man downed like a chopped poplar --so many!)), psychological/proto-psychological depth (helen and paris selfish/narcissistic justification/explanation of their unwillingness to part and avoid disaster: they're fated to be a theme in songs for generations yet to come) and depiction of idealized contemporary mores (fighters refusing to fight and trading armor because their fathers or uncles had once shared each others hospitality -- now the families are locked in ever reciprocating guest-friendship).

i wish i had more time to read through all the commentary but it's enough just to try to keep up with all the battles and the names and their fathers, etc.

  • applied for small, additional gig. would've been good experience, and it turns out i didn't have enough experience to even get it. but i got the interview, and they wanted references, so i had to face the psychic anguish of reaching out to old mentors/colleagues with whom i did good work but didn't do good in maintaining these relationships. but i did reach out, and they were happy enough to hear from me, and were willing to go to bat for me, and now i've re-opened those channels and something good will come out of this; at the very least, strengthening my ability to push through my own mental/emotional blocks and forgive myself for past goofs (the perceived shame of which formerly was prohibitively debilitating; now is just nearly prohibitively debilitating). so, finally, some improvement.-----

Wishing you a swift recovery unity

Btw I could never read anything written in verse, I'll rather wait for the Odyssey movie this year. Are you looking forward to it?

I had a pretty big week. The number one thing that stands out to me is that I ran 5k for the first time. It took me 36.5 minutes and I'm really proud. I didn't think I would ever be at a stage where I actually enjoy running.

I also got a new job. I've been unemployed for just about two months, but now I'm working in fast food. It looks to be an improvement over my last job, but I'm still not looking forward to working in a job I don't care about for minimum wage. Trying to find a long-term job or sector I would want to work in seems impossible. I'm going back to college in September to avoid making any big decisions about work. I'm not someone who wants to spend their life in a career, I'd much rather work to fund my life than have my life revolve around work. Maybe that's because I haven't found something I really care about yet, maybe I lack ambition.

[–] moonlake@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Congrats on the 5k and new job! catgirl-salute One of my goals this year is to run a 5k

[–] Moss@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago

Thank you! Running a 5k was much easier than I thought it would be actually, but it mostly came down to a change in mindset. I used to hate running so so much, but I decided my cardio was too weak this year and wanted to improve it. After a few times of running a kilometer, breaking a sweat, really getting to focus on how the running felt, I found myself looking forward to it. I've never understood what people meant when they said they were "in the zone" until I started running. I would reach a 1km, then think "yeah I got 200 more meters in me", then run that and find myself with a bit more stamina to use up, so I would try to get to 1.5km.

I never would have ran 5k if I didn't start to enjoy it, no matter the health benefits and sense of achievement. If it doesn't feel right in the moment I can't stick with it. Idk if you're the same, but if you are, I recommend that you stop running if it stops feeling good.

swole-doge got back in the gym this weekend after missing last week due to sickness, didn't feel like I lost too much progress so that's good. I still have to motivate myself to do legs on Wednesday, I lost my normal Wednesday gym partner so I gotta push myself to go this week.

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 1 points 1 week ago

Did legs today instead, again nice to see that missing a week didn't significantly impact my progress but I'm also just setting out so there's not much progress to lose

Last week I continued my reading and meditation streaks. I started taking creatine to see if it will improve my energy.

On Saturday I made 17 bean burritos for meal prep chickpea

Today I went running. Hopefully I'll be able to go running at least one more day this week comrade-doggo

[–] Poophammer@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What are you doing for these bean burritos?

[–] moonlake@hexbear.net 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Hear me out, bean burritos meal prep is the single best nutrition hack, especially if you want to lose weight.

Basically you need 3 things: tortillas, legumes and sauce. I like to cook but if you don't have a lot of time, you can literally buy all of these things and combine them without any cooking. It takes me a few hours to make around 17 bean burritos but it would take much less if just bought canned legumes and sauce.

Here's what I put in mine: red kidney beans, chickpeas, soybeans, lentils, corn, bell peppers, dried tomatoes, herbs and spices. I make a salsa sauce with garlic and onion.

It's healthy, delicious and helped me lose weight. chickpea

[–] Poophammer@hexbear.net 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Prepping chickpeas is hard tho, mine always come out too hard. What do you do?

im 2.5 lbs away from my target weight. If i could drop 4 extra pounds thatd be cool but i dont think ill get there in time.

[–] moonlake@hexbear.net 1 points 5 days ago

I soak chickpeas overnight and then they just need to be cooked for 20-30 minutes.

Bean burritos are great for losing weight because they have a bunch of fiber. I also put diced sweet potatoes in them to make them more satiating.

I got less than a month to keep leveling up on the drums. I have a organ trio gig on Saturday with two? friends which should be fun.

I also have a lesson that day with my teacher. I do a lesson a month because it's enough material to master and experiment with and I got other things going on. I'm still in the shed 3 hours a day and listening to records deeply for an hour.

I feel like I'm really hitting my stride, rapid improvement. I need to keep learning repertoire though, the more melodies you know deeply the better your playing and soloing. My ear is good enough to catch melodies, I know a lot of songs but I really needed to get disciplined to dig deeper.

I'm three pounds away from my weight loss goal. I'm not overweight by any means, I just don't think I look my best at my previous weight.
