Oh god they are trying to do Plowshare 2.0.

[–] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 9 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I thought this motherfucker was dead.

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 3 points 3 hours ago

I mean it's such a braindead take that he might as well be

[–] ChillPenguin@lemmy.world 8 points 3 hours ago

It's gotta be lead.... Right? Right?!

[–] Earthman_Jim@lemmy.zip 20 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

What a goddamned fucking idiot.

How much you wanna bet he called Trump and personally made this fucking deranged suggestion to him?

[–] StrongHorseWeakNeigh@piefed.social 57 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

Is newt Gingrich even still alive

Edit: holy shit he actually tweeted that. It was so outlandish I just assumed it was fake.

"Yes, we're irradiated now, but gas is under $3/gal."

The ~~geiger counter~~ Dow will be over 50,000!

[–] Kirp123@lemmy.world 20 points 10 hours ago (3 children)

Well it would be Dubai and the Saudis that would be irradiated. They should be fine with it right?

[–] axh@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

That would guarantee a bright future for Dubai

[–] Ariselas@piefed.ca 17 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

the gas would likely be irradiated too. I heard of an early proposal to detonate nukes deep underground in the tar sands to bring the oil to the top, theoretically it would work but radioactive oil.

[–] Rcklsabndn@sh.itjust.works 10 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Not irradiated! It's been treated with Shell Atomic Boost!

Just look for the glowing pump.

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 6 points 7 hours ago

This is the talent McDonald's marketing needs.

[–] errer@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

You mean my cars get free nuke juice? Why aren’t we doing this again?

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago

fuck them saudis and their sportswashing

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 13 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Less than that. They'd have to sell this particular gas at a discount, considering it would be radioactive after making this detour.

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 3 points 8 hours ago

The transported good would not be radioactive after the journey, though I can't say the same for the vessel

Well, not Americans, but brown people halfway across the world would be. But they're not people to Americans so who cares.

It's not. This has been proposed multiple times throughout history. The U.S. program, named Project Plowshare, was active from the late 1950s to the 1970s and explored various peaceful applications for nuclear explosives. It was built on ideas from older, British and German plans. The Russians also had their own plans. This is not a new idea.

[–] NoForwadSlashS@piefed.social 25 points 10 hours ago (1 children)
[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 7 points 8 hours ago

Where, in OP's post, does it claim this is a new idea?

Sounds increadibly expensive.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 35 points 10 hours ago

For those who don't know about it, Project Plowshare was a cold war project where the US investigating the use of nuclear weapons for geo engineering projects.

Here is a WTYP Podcast episode about it:

[–] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 4 points 6 hours ago

There is a price between $10m/kg and $100m/kg that Iranians sell enriched uranium to US to satisfy US denuclearization aims, and Iran gets its reparations/reconstruction concession, and full trade access to the world. Of course Bibi will keep saying they are 2 weeks away from a weapon, but you have to fuck bibi.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 7 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I've stopped asking if people are this stupid, because yes, they are.

But, I think this is more about sowing fear, than a serious suggestion.

I keep trying to persuade myself, in spite of clear evidence to the contrary, that people are not this stupid. But, it doesn't work.

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Oh man... I hate to blow your bubble, but that guy is just repeating something that was under serious consideration about 50 years ago.

He probably just remembers the proposals, and not the problems people found in it.

[–] nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 14 points 10 hours ago (3 children)

Is this... actually Newt? Honestly can't tell would appreciate clarification

[–] StrongHorseWeakNeigh@piefed.social 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Yes, it is him and it is a real tweet.

[–] fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net 11 points 10 hours ago

I too want to know if project plowshare is back on the menu

[–] chocrates@piefed.world 6 points 10 hours ago (4 children)
[–] Marthirial@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Brain yes, mouth to ass, no.

TBF he was a professor. He probably has a good ability to form complex sentences and manipulate concepts.

He is also a Conservative, Christian ideologue who has been steeped in both those Faith-based cultures for decades.

The Faith-based community tends to ultimately drift away from the Reality-based one.

In the 1970s, Gingrich was a professor of history and geography at the University of West Georgia.

🤦

Has he ever looked at a map? The only way I could see this happening is by going through the most populated parts of UAE.

Now, I know what the woke deep state is going to say, and I want to save you the trouble of listening to them.

“The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty?” Never ratified it. Even if we did, who cares. Next.

“The environmental impact?” Mr. Secretary, Iranian oil is leaking everywhere. Tankers are on fire near Fujairah. This approach is constructive destruction.

“Radiation?” Radiation is the most overblown left-wing conspiracy since climate change. The Plowshare’s 1962 underground Sedan test fallout reached South Dakota in 1962 and South Dakota is fine. Went for Trump by thirty points. Plus, the residual glow keeps Iran from trying anything funny near the new channel.

The views expressed above do not necessarily represent those of anyone with brain cells.

This is hilarious. Heh.

I don't buy Gingrich's earnesty. He must be trolling too, like the article explicitly was. Most Republicans are doing it on Twitter now, and that would fit Gingrich’s history, too.

...And it kinda worked. It looks like Lemmy swallowed the hook here, and I'm sure Twitter did too.

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 6 points 9 hours ago

Omg, I absolutely love the idea of fuel exhaust that’s even more radioactive than it already is. I just love it so much I could die.
