But, but! You can change ~~the system~~ people from within by voting!

[–] Ryanmiller70@lemmy.zip 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

People have this weird dislike of the block button and anyone that uses it. I use it very frequently on any social media site I use in order to have a better experience. It was one of my bigger problems with Reddit cause it had an extremely low block limit.

[–] obamacares@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

what do you mean with "low block limit"

[–] Ryanmiller70@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

The amount of users you can block was really low. From what I've looked up it's 1000 which is basically nothing. When I was using Twitter I had over 20k accounts blocked to better curate my experience.

They don't block .ml so they can spam "you're on .ml lol everyone you're talking to is an idiot/tankie/Sino-Russian bot" unprompted to anyone else who actually tries to engage in debate here. Acting like an edgelord with low effort dunks presumably also with a saviour complex of "guiding people who stumbled into the tankie zone back to the Western-liberal light" takes priority over actually blocking the people they hate and keep threatening to block.

Big brain meme template:

Regular brain -> curating feed by subbing to comms and browse based on my subbed community Big brain -> curating feed by browsing all and block the community I don't like Galaxy brain -> curating feed by browsing all and getting banned from communities

[–] DarkCloud@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (5 children)

Wait, I'm banned from here aren't I? Why am I even seeing this .ml community?

[–] Arcanepotato@crazypeople.online 29 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

If this isn't a joke this is the most hilarious mix up I have ever seen

Edit:

[–] DarkCloud@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

I hath been cancelled!

[–] davel@lemmy.ml 28 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Why am I even seeing this .ml community?

Why do butthurt whiners keep asking this rhetorical question in our communities?

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 23 points 1 week ago

because you have to be super banned, not just ordinary banned. lol

[–] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmy.ml 17 points 1 week ago

Probably your ban expired, .ml rarily permabans

Lol I thought I was drunk and posted this meme.

if a person thinks blocking users and communities they dont like is the way to curate their feed, i hope they block all the communities im in.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

To be fair, you're on an instance that blocks communist instances. Or do you mean defederation is better than individual blocking?

[–] texture@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

im new to lemmy, so i was yet unaware of .world instance blocking communist instances. i'll look into that.

i think blocking is goofy, thats what i was trying to convey.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 18 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Gotcha. Lemmy.world is defederated from Lemmygrad.ml and Hexbear.net , so if you want a more general instance Lemmy.zip is probably more what you want. Alternatively, Lemmy.ml is federated with those two (and almost every other major instance), but is defederated from porn instances.

[–] texture@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

thanks for this info, its appreciated.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 week ago

No problem!

[–] orc_princess@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

but is defederated from porn instances.

I didn't know that, but that's great

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 week ago

Yea I'd rather not have my social media experience intersperced with porn, haha.

[–] toad@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

.world have been proven to subscribe people to israeli propaganda mailing list. A read about a guy who used unique email address for each subscription and he started recieving emails about israel from the one he used for .world.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't doubt this, but do you have a source?

[–] toad@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

I saw the firsthand accounts of multiple people saying this happened to them. One of them was an ex mod and the other used unique address.

[–] astutemural@midwest.social 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That's exactly how I curate my feed. Do you have any idea how many sports sublemmies my instance has? It's the Midwest. It was a lot.

[–] texture@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

thats an interesting example and i do appreciate it.

but unless you regularly block users bc you dont like what they said, then i didnt really mean you :) i could have been more clear with my original comment that i exclusively meant both those things, but i didnt think to at the time.

[–] Arcanepotato@crazypeople.online 10 points 1 week ago (6 children)

What's wrong with blockers users when you don't like what they say? If someone is spewing slurs you bet I'm blocking them. I don't need that in my life.

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

The longer and more thoroughly you do so, the less aware you are; after a while you can be quite out of touch with the people and world around you. You live in a society, and it's better to know your enemy than to be oblivious to them. Social networking with less social can be a hug box trap.

Nothing WRONG with doing it, however. It's your right to be anywhere on the scale between being very social and total isolation.

I feel like this presumes people don't have irl community and social networks. The Internet and social media isn't my only view into the world. People are their worst selves online because there is no duty of care to each other.

I think it's absurd to say that filtering your social media, something that inherently depends on engagement and algorithms, gives you a more narrow worldview. As if each social media doesn't have inherent bias.

i come to lemmy to relax during my break at work, not to debate about weather or not we should carpet bomb civilians

[–] texture@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (4 children)

well theres nothing to debate there. but since you brought it up, we shouldnt.
