All the more reason why voting rights should not be granted to every citizen by default.

The problem is, I haven't seen a way to implement such a system that would not be easily corrupted and abused. It would be great if we could get the bottom 30% of these dipshits out of the government though.

Voting is only one of the crucial checks protecting democracy, unfortunately most of the others have been compromised too.

I think the solution isn't reducing the amount of voters, but making the vote manditory, along with replacing fptp with proportional representation.

That or abolish the federal government and disband the union, the states can then vote on which neighbours to band together with in the fallout of it.

While solutions like STV instead of FPTP make perfect sense, I fear you’re underestimating the stupidity with which people forced to vote would cast their votes (eg crossing the first name they see or whatever).

In the context of the beacon of democracy, the US of A, the easiest way to sharply increase turnout would be to make the Election Day free for more people (for example by holding them during weekends), but I am afraid the current system is deliberately designed to disenfranchise those who can’t afford to take time off work

Increasing voter turnout is important but people have to do it for the right reasons. Otherwise, it’s going to be the same popularity contest as currently, just with a different flavor

Yeah, I can't argue with that, the issues go far deeper than a bit of reform will mend, there's a disease of entitled stupidity at the core of all this

But sure, rightoids ... tell me more about how you voted for Trump because you wanted lower gas prices for your giant pickup truck.

About time the US consumers paid the same for gas as the rest of us. It's still way cheaper but getting there.

Maybe they'll soon understand the reason why the rest of the world is looking at alternative energy sources

This was my first thought at the news. That plus we've seen higher than this before if you conside inflation. Still not getting paid adjusted for inflation, but that's a different topic, and part of why these prices seem high.

Higher prices also encourage less usage, which is what we ought to be doing anyway. And yes, we live in a society that is very dependent on using, but we have to change somehow.

Just FYI there's zero reason for this increase other than greed on behalf of oil companies. There's plenty of oil.

Crumble slow.

Thanks O'Donald!

I'm sure that could become much much higher. Especially as Iran is about to open up the Straights to all nations except the US and any US Allies
