"Live with a man 40 years. Share his house, his meals. Speak on every subject. Then tie him up and hold him over the volcano's edge. And on that day, you will finally meet the man."

40 years?? I just learned you only need 1 date if you prepare well enough.

[–] HotsauceHurricane@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

In this scenario I would 100% be like," omg please just order some tacos. You haven't eaten today. Let's snack and watch 30-rock".

I don't understand, what is supposed to happen?

[–] Dadifer@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] BjornBjorkeson@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's a quote from Adelai Niska. Ftfy.

[–] Dadifer@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] 5too@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

They're both quoting a (fictional?) author

[–] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

Yes fictional.

Shan Yu I believe. I remember because it's the same name as the villain in Mulan.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 weeks ago

There's ya go. That's the one. 🤓🖖🏽

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Wasn't that ~~Xiao/Shao~~ Shan* Yu?

[–] Dadifer@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I don't think the attributed quote was real.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

That doesn't change the fact that the quote was originally attributed to Shan Yu by Shepherd Book, then by Niska, IIRC. If they exist in a fictional world, then attributing the fictional reference correctly only seems accurate. 🥴🖖🏽

I also remember the meme that said you never truly know someone unless you’ve seen them deal with shitty wi-fi.

I think this is the way to test your potential future life partner.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 23 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The way people handle minor inconveniences is definitely a good tell.

Another good metric is how they treat wait staff when there's an issue.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 weeks ago

No tip == not even the tip.

[–] TaterTot@piefed.social 14 points 2 weeks ago

Everyone loves to pick the most extreme circumstances to define a person's character.

I rather feel it's the opposite. You never truly know someone until you've seen how they deal with the mundanity of life for a few years.

[–] Eat_Your_Paisley@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Do I get to choose which loved one?

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

Only the most

[–] starelfsc2@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

This is something I've thought about a lot, is this really true? People say you don't know someone unless things get bad, but like... if someone improves my life 95% of the time, but then they don't get sleep or are having a rough time and they treat me really badly, is that 5% the "real them?" Idk just something about that doesn't sit quite right with me.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 6 points 2 weeks ago

No, but it's a real part of them. A part you might not have previously known.

[–] NABDad@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

My wife's family was not as well off as mine, her older brother was killed by a drunk driver before I met her, and I held her hair back while she vomited when she got sick when we were supposed to be on a date.

I think I've got it all covered.

It took her longer to know me, but over the past 40 years, I think we've hit every one.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 weeks ago

You've held her over a volcano?! 🥹

[–] Slovene85@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 weeks ago

What bullshit advice. Some people might wait decades to get married then.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 weeks ago

Hold hour horses there Walder Frey

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 5 points 2 weeks ago

Add until you've lived with them for a few years and until you've traveled with them.

[–] sin_free_for_00_days@sopuli.xyz 5 points 2 weeks ago

The best advice I received, when I was still impressionable, was,"You'll never truly know someone. And that's OK."

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 weeks ago

This sounds like a pitch for one hell of a movie.

[–] remotedev@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago

N - Nurturing dependence

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Trauma bond be like…

[–] HotsauceHurricane@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

My S/O , an otherwise confident, intelligent, independent, strong willed and tough as nails bitch becomes an absolute monster incapable of caring for themselves when they get sick.

I love them so much.
