Except Cuba and Venezuela, who will soon be the USA, and ground zero for resisting the MAGA regime

[–] Nomecks@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

What makes you think he won't proceed to throw the "illegals" out of these new American states?

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Venezuela has a population of Vietnam around the start of the Vietnam War, is 20% larger than Afghanistan, and largely mountain and jungle. America is incapable of invading and occupying them.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 2 weeks ago

they have a difficult time invading iran, its all mountains and deserts.

[–] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

He'd have to kill them. The blowback would be harder if he tried to get them out. Every south American country would go to war.

[–] jrTug_2T@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 weeks ago

Considering the events of the past week, that seems to be the most likely action he'll take.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 2 weeks ago

hes going to start targeting the same cubans, venezuelans, argentinas that voted him into power the last election.

[–] Nurse_Robot@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

This is a deeply concerning stark warning of what's to come for other nations nearby

[–] Kekzkrieger@feddit.org 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

If that doesnt spike up use of renewables what is?

If you have solar powered homes and solar powered vehicles who needs oil anyways?

[–] MrMakabar@slrpnk.net 12 points 2 weeks ago

You need money to buy that and having no oil is basically a death sentence for a somewhat modern economy like that of Cuba. When the Soviet Union collapsed and that limited oil shipments to Cuba, there was a serious food shortage in the country. This was without the US actively stopping oil tankers from reaching the country.

Imagine if we were a country that made a genuine effort to be friends with the nations around us?

[–] Dr_Del_Fuego@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 weeks ago

But what if they don't want us to continue to worship pedophiles? Then we'll have to kill all of their families just to live in peace 😮‍💨

Cuba needs to close the strait of Florida.

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 0 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Strange that Russia isn't helping Cuba.

[–] RamRabbit@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Russia is bogged down in their war of conquest; they don’t have the ability to do anything else. See also: Syria and Armenia.

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Then Trump should realize that the war in Ukraine is bogging down Russia.

[–] electric_nan@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Of course he knows. US support for Ukraine is perfectly calibrated to make sure the war remains at a stalemate. The whole idea is to keep Russia bogged down.

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That wouldn't be a good strategy since Russia would win a war of attrition because of its greater manpower.

[–] electric_nan@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Again, the idea isn't necessarily to make Russia lose. It's to make them fight for a long time.

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The problem is the difficulty in determining how long Ukraine can hold out. If Russia conquers Ukraine, it will be much more powerful. Of course, Putin knows this. That's the reason he's fighting.

[–] electric_nan@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm not suggesting that this is a good strategy, or that Russia doesn't have their own strategy. I predict that if we see Russia begin to convincingly turn the tide (perhaps it has begun) we'll see renewed aid to Ukraine-- maybe newer fighter planes. In general though, it doesn't seem like Ukraine could really "win" on the terms they would like. Ultimately, as you mentioned, attrition favors Russia. You need soldiers to hold territory.

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

If Russia starts to win, the only way to stop Russia would be for the West to send in troops.

This is what Europe should propose to Putin. Russia will withdraw from all land it seized from Ukraine after the 2022 invasion. NATO would be dissolved and replaced with a European alliance. Ukraine and Canada would be permitted to join but not the US. All sanctions against Russia will be lifted. Russia will not be required to pay reparations. If Putin doesn't accept the proposal, the UK and France would send troops to Ukraine.

[–] electric_nan@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That's an interesting proposal. A couple years ago it would have sounded crazy, but now... I'm not sure. If I really had to predict, I would say that Zelensky will get pushed out or made to sue for peace. Russia will keep all gained territory.

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 1 points 2 weeks ago

Ukraine presently is doing better on the battlefield, but Europe should adopt my proposal so the war ends quickly.

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Isn't the US still blockading oil in to Cuba?

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yes. And it has a total blockade on oil shipments

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes, but Russia could send ships with oil escorted by Russian naval ships.

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They could, but I'm not sure I see what's in it for Russia right now.

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Prestige. Russia would be seen as abandoning an ally because it's afraid of the US.

[–] RamRabbit@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Making Trump look weak is probably the only thing that would convince him to donate arms to Ukraine. Russia cannot afford for the USA to start that up again; Russia is struggling hard with only Europe donating arms.

disappointing but not that strange. we love to criticize the usa all the time, but when they want something, we kneel and start licking the boots…

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Canada not helping Cuba against the US is absolutely abnormal.

Historically we're quite close.

[–] Tolc@lemmy.world -2 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

putin you dumbfuck please help cuba

[–] RamRabbit@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Putin is bogged down in his war of conquest; his oil export terminals thrashed and refineries burnt. He doesn’t have the ability to do anything else. See also: Syria and Armenia.

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

china has stepped up with shittons of solar.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Why would he do that if the oil can be sold closer with less risk, for more money?

China's been helping but with solar more than oil.

[–] Tolc@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

Russia sent one ship of oil one month ago ig, so theres that. Soviet Union stood with cuba and russia being its successor state have some responsibility. Altho putin wont do much work that doesnt favor his oligarchic friends.

[–] Michal@programming.dev 1 points 2 weeks ago

He doesn't have oil to spare, his refineries are on fire or blown up.
