Do we all need new gpus for decoding if this comes the new norm?

Software decoding should work fine on modern PCs if the bitrate isn't really high. You will want hardware support for anything battery powered though.
i wonder if there is a way to accelerate video decode without the specific hardware.
kind of rough that we need a new gpu for every new codec, on devices that often can't upgrade them.
A large FPGA could work as a hardware video decoder that is software updatable. Unfortunately they are way to expensive for consumer hardware.
It would be nice if someone would make low cost hardware video decoders on an m.2 module. Then it could be easily upgraded even on a laptop.
Considering how long AV1 adoption has taken, you probably have a decade before you need to worry about needing AV2 support.
i still barely have av1 hardware and it's not getting any cheaper.
i'd imagine it'd be faster if we didn't need new hardware support to catch up everytime but oh well if that's how it is.
Cool to see continuing support for Film Grain Synthesis in AV2.
I was pretty shocked that it’s got integrated support for split screens, AR, VR, etc. I’m old, so that just seems amazing.
