Should let the have their island then blockade it.

That's the new airport they're building in a nature reserve, presumably to service the new development so the billionaire class don't have to transfer.

The reporting on this is confusing. The island is not in the middle of the Med, it's just offshore and in no way deserted. It was popular with locals and tourists before they stopped public access.

[–] LavaPlanet@sh.itjust.works 1 points 8 hours ago

It was purposely kept undeveloped. At cost to taxpayers, conserved for local wildlife.

[–] Eresea@lemmy.world 12 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Won't anyone think of the billionaires ?

[–] in4apenny@lemmy.dbzer0.com -2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

But our paychecks depend on keeping billionaires in charge, how do you convince everyone to dislike their paychecks more than they like eating? Whether we like it or not we're in a situation where we rely on billionaires to feed our families. That's why everyone keeps saying "I can't protest or take strong action otherwise my family would be penniless." It's an excuse most people make. How do we fix that?

[–] innerwar@lemmy.ca 1 points 43 minutes ago

I feel you. I am close to this situation but maybe it is time to throw caution to the wind. If not now when? Take up those arms, get the food stuffs to last in a siege. Take precatuions

It is so strikingly weird that Albania trumps up (pun intended) multiple consecutive mass protests in no time whereas the USA as a nation with 330+million inhabitants could only muster a few nokings protests in the span of years.

US citizens don't know how to protest

[–] Folstar@lemmus.org 16 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Yes, though the owners were clever and taught us wrong on purpose. Americans think waving signs in the park on a Saturday morning in a festival like environment is the highest form of protesting because "non-violent" protest was pushed in K-12 as if that's how it works. Seriously, ask an American about MLK or Gandhi and they'll sing their praises (to the point Conservative "thinkers" will genuinely praise MLK and think they would be on the same side, somehow). Then ask them about the Civil Right movement and Indian Independence - they know between jack and shit other than talking about those two men. Now ask them about labor protests that happened just down the street, breaking company towns, or literally any other kind of protest in the long, blood history of protesting domestic and abroad- again, crickets.

Also, our cities and towns are designed to make protesting difficult, ineffective, and easy to break up. Again, clever owners.

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 0 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

You think there is any planning with our cities and towns? LOL

[–] Folstar@lemmus.org 1 points 5 hours ago

I'm fairly certain we're talking about two different things here. You're accurately saying "planning lol" in regards to the things that citizens care about. I'm referring to "emegency response planning" usually floated under the guise of firetrucks but darn if it doesn't help the SWAT teams more often.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 5 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

certain US citizens do. The majority have been just fine with how things were. They saved the riots and car fires for sports events.

[–] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Americans have been selectively bred and conditioned to follow orders and be nice over many generations. Sounds horrible, but they've effectively been turned into domesticated cattle.

Successfully? Probably not fully, since more and more are waking up. Or at least protesting. But still scarry as hell how close US governments got.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

I've been saying this for the longest time. The Americans who ended the first Gilded age and elected the two Roosevelts will be rolling on their graves for seeing their descendants being so complacent.

And permanently exhausted from all the sugar added to food that politicians get lobbied into doing nothing against. Hell, going into a Mexican grocery store, you'll see stop-sign shaped warnings that say "Excessive sucre" or something like that. Like, we've got the warnings on cigarettes, but that's about it. The US doesn't care about public health except when it's to shill more products :/

Sagittarius A if you can hear me, expand to swallow the Sun. Thanks!

[–] alanjaow@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago

Woah, don't bring other star systems into our BS!

[–] DahGangalang@infosec.pub 60 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I think I missed a news cycle or two.

Can someone link me to what's going on with this?

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 87 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Jared Kushner went on a trip on a Rotschild (yes that one) mega yacht diving around Europe. Then the Albanian prime minister came to their boat and promised to sell them a massive island for a low price (in exchange for political support or bribes from daddy Trump most likely). Shortly after the boat visit the Albanian government privatized the island and sold it to Jared.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I thought the Albania prime minister was an AI hologram?

Still, this is fucking bullshit. Do people live on the island? Any cultural heritage sites? It's bullshit either way, but that would make it so much worse.

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's a former Soviet military base and had been closed off for its ecosystem.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

How symbolic.

It's fucked up that they're going to destroy the preserved ecosystem, but not that surprising honestly. I'm so burnt out and disillusioned that nothing really surprises me anymore...

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

That burnout feeling. I don't know how anybody DOESN'T feel that way. Honestly sometimes I wish I was stupid and could just dive into tiktok and pretend that everything is fine.

[–] lath@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago

The trumpians are all over free real estate in eastern Europe, which started with blackmailing Ukraine for personal mineral rights in exchange for not blocking arms and interfering with the war, then went south from there.

Oh, and if you meant an actual link, don't have one.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 12 points 1 day ago

Ivanka and Kushner are planning to build a bunch of shit there.

[–] Tronn4@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We in America should do the same on trumps party day

[–] cookiecoookie@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

Should, but never will

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Albanians show up to protest! maybe Muricas can learn something here

[–] parricc@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago (10 children)

You realize we've been having large protests, right? For example, the city I live in is not even one of the top 10 largest cities in the US, but it has had multiple anti-Trump protests within the last year with a turnout of over 50k people. There were also other cities within 130 km of mine that had crowds with over 10k people.

The turnout in Tirana is similar in scale, but when you account for how small of a country Albania is and the fact that the entire country can easily travel to the capital to protest, the Albanian turnout is actually far less. The farthest anyone has to travel in Albania to reach the capital is 300 km. You don't even need a car. You can take an 8 hour bus ride.

In comparison, if I wanted to go to the US capital to protest, it is over 2500km away. That's like traveling from Tirana to Estonia, but without the option of easy public transportation. Not only that, but US politicians live in highly secure areas far away from where the public can reach. They never have to face us if they don't want to. No politicians even go to the building of my state capital except for a single 5 month period every two years. So the last several protests in my state capital have been people protesting at an empty building. Look dude, just because the media doesn't report stuff doesn't mean people aren't protesting. But a protest is going to be a lot more effective when you live in a tiny country with an easy way to travel.

Can the average person in your country afford to potentially lose their job while simultaneously being disqualified from unemployment benefits? My current job has 0 days PTO, and yes, I would be fired and disqualified from unemployment benefits. Can the average person in your country spend over $620 per person to fly to Washington DC? Yes, it costs that much for me. And going by bus would be even more expensive and take me over a week in travel time round trip. Can the average person in your country afford to spend over $500 in hotel costs even when splitting a room? If not, please kindly shut the fuck up. Me and many other people have been protesting regularly. But it's not possible for most of us, me included, to protest where the politicians are. Not to mention, the politicians don't care in the least. They mock us regularly. It's difficult to coordinate anything across a country that is as massive as the US, but we're at least trying.

What's up with people walking backwards About 5 seconds into this video lol

[–] modus@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They probably just reversed the clip so it's movement matched the adjacent clips. The big red flag in the shot is all the way at the far end of the street. The drone probably just went down and back and they just chopped up the whole clip.

[–] Bipauler@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 hours ago

I guess that makes sense, but it had me doing a double take for sure. Thought maybe it was just sleep deprivation at first lol
