Must be difficult to find so many people called Jack

McLaren only needs a slight car performance increase before Red Bull has a problem. But, getting that increase will be tough. Hope they can still get it in this season.

[โ€“] FrostyTrichs@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Undoubtedly there's still performance to be unlocked as they understand how the upgrades are working in the real world compared to the wind tunnel. A McLaren on the top step of a proper GP podium could be on the cards before the end of the season.

[โ€“] Rapidcreek@reddthat.com 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Well they're still a half second behind the Bull. When it's half that I'll believe you.

[โ€“] grumpyoldgit@lemmy.world 15 points 2 years ago

They're half a second behind one of the Red Bulls. The other one seems to have given up. If McLaren can regularly put two drivers on the podium then RBR have a problem next year.

Red Bull probably stopped developing their car months ago, they'll be ok with getting overtaken by the pack by the end of the season.

Here is an alternative Piped link(s):

I thought to myself woow that was quick when I saw it live. Then the 1.8sec came on the screen.

[โ€“] Nighed@sffa.community 3 points 2 years ago

Even the Alfa mechanic at the end thought it was a hot pitstop ๐Ÿคฃ

Weird โ€œthis video is not available.โ€ But itโ€™s mclarenโ€™s account it looks like?

[โ€“] davetapley@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

It's looks so smooth, that's what really stood out to me.

[โ€“] agent_flounder@lemmy.one 5 points 2 years ago

Smooth is fast applies to pit stops too it seems. That was mind blowing. Clearly it took many, many hours of practice to achieve that level of optimization.

Dude on the left in the power stance is what stood out to me as I was watching live.

But, whatever happened to the minimum 2 seconds requirement FIA set?

[โ€“] darreninthenet@sh.itjust.works 15 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It wasn't a requirement, they made changes with the intention that it would always take at least two seconds.

The teams just adapted and got better again.

[โ€“] e_mc2@feddit.nl 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Well as far as I know the pneumatic wheel thingies (can't remember the right word for them) have a green light that switches on after 2 seconds. Before that you're not allowed to send the car of.

[โ€“] Squeak@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

I believe it has a green light that shows once the required torque is reached. They monitor the time between the light and the reaction time to send the car. If the reaction time is too quick, indicating they sent the car without actually waiting for the green light, then thatโ€™s what may cause an issue.

Thereโ€™s no 2 second mandate. Red Bull have already been under 2 seconds this season.

The guy who gives the green light has to take in a lot of information very quickly!

[โ€“] TWeaK@lemm.ee 12 points 2 years ago

It's crazy to think there are 20 people directly involved in a pit stop. (21 if you count the guy stood around not labelled or doing anything, but he doesn't have a helmet.)

[โ€“] DeathWearsANecktie@lemm.ee 5 points 2 years ago

Incredible work!! A shining example of good teamwork, co-ordination, and everyone knowing exactly what their role is.

[โ€“] joat_mon@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Absolutely amazing. So much respect for the skill and coordination of the pit team! Well done!

The gunner is there to ward off predators during the vulnerable state of pitting.

[โ€“] MrSnowy@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

How long before they can change the wheels without stopping? Sounds dumb now but we'll probably have that technology soon

[โ€“] JJROKCZ@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I donโ€™t see how thatโ€™s physically possible, you have to swap the whole wheel, there will always be some stopped time involved in that

Have a physically long machine do the work. It would have a carriage start moving just as the car arrives, pick up the car, replace tires and do whatever else is needed, then drop the car when it's done.

But just because it can be done doesn't mean it should be done. It would be extremely expensive to develop. That money is likely better spent optimizing the vehicle itself.

No lie I saw that dude on the left in the power stance and knew shit was gunna go down. I give all credit to him
