For anyone wondering these are, legally speaking, ebikes. As in they squeezed a delivery truck into the legal definition for a bike to be able to use bike lanes.

[–] nialv7@lemmy.world 38 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Well then we need to change the definition of ebikes. Either that or we only allow private personal vehicles to use the bike lane.

[–] Fontasia@feddit.nl 3 points 6 days ago

In the Netherlands, delivery vehicles use bike lanes all the time, however, these are made by local manufacturers that aren't as big as this

For Example

maybe better to consider them bikes encourage their use and replace more car lanes with bike lanes.

They are still better than cars.

[–] groet@feddit.org 10 points 1 week ago

That would mean a bike courier / delivery driver on an actually real bike would not be allowed anymore

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

There should be a common sense rule to laws. Like, sometimes you look at sobering and it’s obviously not right

[–] FUCKING_CUNO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (4 children)

Wtf for real?! Thats fucking wild

Edit: So does that mean they can legally park in all the bike lanes? Is the bike lane even usable by bicycles any more, or has it just turned into Amazon's exclusive shipping lane?

[–] Schlemmy@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Can bikes park in bike lanes?

[–] blaggle42@lemmy.today 6 points 1 week ago

The bike lane is usable. I mean, for about a half-a-block at a time, cause of the parked cars.

I wish NYC would allow citizens to take a video of a car parked in the bike lane for more than a minute, issue a ticket, and make it profitable for the ticket issuer. All of the problems would go away overnight.

And actually, I wish we could take videos of cars going through red lights. Or, LOL, illegal u-turns. "Go around the block" is not a thing anymore. Everyone just turns around wherever the fuck they are.

If it's like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=483oaUU1tIs then the entire vehicle is built to the exact limits of e-bike laws. For example you can theoretically propel that thing by pedalling even if it is never intended that the 'rider' would do so.

Park, as in stop for a period of time

[–] GreenCrunch@piefed.blahaj.zone 39 points 1 week ago

Yeah idk why they painted a bicycle on the Amazon Parking Lane

[–] apftwb@lemmy.world 36 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oh no. Now we have justification for expanding bike lane infrastructure.

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Wanted to bitch about it with everyone else. but you singlehandedly changed my mind.

Fuck Amazon, but more bike infrastructure is good.

[–] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They want to use the bike lane so they don't have to follow traffic laws.

Bike infrastructure is good, capitalism still bad.

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I don't disagree with you at all.

just wondering if a big chunk of NY delivery/cargo vehicles were electric cargo bikes like that, would it be an improvement? (given that will force turning car lanes into bike lanes).

[–] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Theoretically it would be less asthma for children that's really not nothing.

But the batteries for those ebikes almost certainly come from children in mines.

It all ends up as borrowing from tom to pay peter back when amazon is involved.

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Ebikes take much less resources than cars. Complaining about reducing the resources and energy needed for transportation is disingenuous.

You cannot pull a "no ethical consumption under capitalism" to protect the current status quo.

[–] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 4 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Not abusing a sentience in another country so you can have your funco pops at home is also not nothing.

I'd like amazon logistics to be broken up and owned by the communities it inhabitants. But I'd also like that to happen to GM and Ford too. If you catch my drift.

100%

but logistics wise, small electric vehicles, small enough to be considered ebikes is preferable to current car/van/truck fleets. as they have a greater human cost as well.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

What about the batteries in the phone you are using? Or the gasoline that's manufactured using cobalt-based catalysts? Do you care about the children in mines that extracted those?

"New Yorkers"
Looks inside
One of the biggest corporations in the world

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't know if you know this, but corporations are staffed by people who are in control of their own actions.

[–] the_abecedarian@piefed.social 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

actually the board, C suite, and upper management are the ones who control what the employees do. maybe you've experienced this at your own job.

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah, the board called up that specific worker and told them to drive in the bike lane.

[–] the_abecedarian@piefed.social 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

do you not know how big companies work? pressure to work as fast as possible and not care about the world around you ("externalize costs") comes from every level of the business.

  1. board demands results
  2. c suite creates the strategy and demands upper management fulfill it
  3. upper management sets targets and uses funding allocation to pressure middle & lower management
  4. middle & lower management pressure workers to hit/exceed targets, often by making them compete with each other
  5. workers do what they have to to stay employed, which in this case means blocking the bike lane because Amazon doesn't even let their workers take bathroom breaks..

Amazon in particular uses "subcontractor" drivers who are paid less, have few/no benefits or protections, and who compete with each other on speed and other metrics. it's yet another reason to stop caring about the world around you.

Yeah, what a shitpost 🥰

[–] i_stole_ur_taco@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If they’re moving along the bike lanes the way cyclists use them I don’t have big beef here.

If they’re then PARKING in the bike lanes to go make their deliveries, we have a problem. One that can be solved pretty easily considering these aren’t cars and are very light. Very easy to tip. Especially when they’re just sitting there abandoned in a flat bike lane.

[–] okwhateverdude@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

"Do you maybe wanna go amazon tipping with me? 👉 👈🥺"

[–] FUCKING_CUNO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Did they buy a bunch of Model T's for deliveries?

Henry Ford is missing from his grave.

[–] SingularEye@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 week ago

how is that an ebike it has 4 wheels

[–] blaggle42@lemmy.today 5 points 1 week ago

Yeah, I just hope NYC is taxing the fuck out of those quadra-cycle-boxes. I know we aren't, but come on- Amazon trucks routinely park all day near my apt, blocking the bike lane and half of the road. Tax them, tax them, tax them.

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It looks like the bike lane ended right before the truck.

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Yep. WTF the bike lane just ends and cars are signaled into moving there?

It is probably safer than just making cars cross the lane, but there's some transition missing there.

[–] gankouskhan@piefed.zip 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

ebikes are vehicles in the same way that motorcycles are as in they are not exclusively human powered. They belong in the normal lanes with the other non human powered vehicles. It's dangerous to riders in the bike lane legally when ebikes and other vehicles are whipping around because they want to skip the line. According to NYC law you are only allowed 750 watts max and 15mph limit to use the bike lane. They really need to revisit that because these are not safe to others in the lane.
