My controversial opinion:

We did this with sci-fi.

Too many people think their future actually looks like Star Trek or Mars terraforming movies or whatever, and buy Musk’s claim he’s going to make humanity an interplanetary race.

But it doesn’t work like that.

Space travel is impossibly hard. It is just impractical for human bodies, as they exist now, outside of specific scientific missions. Physics dictates that it is expensive. Quantify it, and basically, civilization woukd have to advance to a point where our Earth problems are already trivial to even begin mass manned space travel.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for drone work in space, crazy science missions, and beautiful, hopeful speculative sci fi.

But I feel like the population needs a cold bucket of water. Space travel is not going to save us; Earth is all we got for now.

As proven by the voting public, too many people live in a fantasy land where the impossible is possible, like making lying cheaters into honest presidents. I don’t understand what benefit anybody thinks they could get from a space station on Mars. It’s not like they’re gonna get to live there or get any of the benefits from it. It must be the same people that refused to place any restrictions on Billionaires, like taxes, somehow they think a billionaire base on Mars is good for them.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (1 children)

That’s exactly what they think. They literally think Elon Musk is going to take them to Mars and automate work with AI robots and such, because nothing in their information sphere ever contradicts it.

It’s not fair to expect the average person to understand orbital mechanics, but putting them in an information bubble like Musk has is not fair to them.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

It would probably work out better for everybody if he actually did take them to Mars.

Needs more Joker. Not the meme, the literal, actual Joker.

It will never not be funny to me that most white supremacists look like their mom drank bleach in order to abort them.

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 12 points 17 hours ago

I have no economic knowledge or trading ability, here's my very important prediction...

...this is a huge rug pull and the billionaires in on it are going to make a lot of money.

[–] CIA_chatbot@lemmy.world 49 points 23 hours ago (18 children)

Man this is great! My theory is the simulation ends when the first person hits a trillion. If that’s the case then this hellscape is almost over everyone! Someone finally won the damn game and we can all log out!

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 3 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

That was the case, but they got a new grant and now the simulation goes to quadrillion

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

Holy fuck your mod log is... Christ...

[–] CIA_chatbot@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

God damnit!

[–] rollerbang@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

A theoretical trillion or a real trillion though?

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 18 points 22 hours ago

Somebody’s been watching Sword Art Online.

[–] garbage_world@lemmy.world 8 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Elon Musk is already worth over trillion

[–] Tryenjer@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

The game rules were written using the long scale, so the guy is actually becoming the first billionaire.

[–] CIA_chatbot@lemmy.world 21 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Yea, we should be getting the server is going down message any time now, right? …. Right guys? ~guys?~

[–] Zink@programming.dev 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

The admins have decided that most of us can take so much more absurdity before we break. This experiment is sick, I tell you.

[–] CIA_chatbot@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Shits starting to feel like the Stanford prison guard experiment

When this bubble pops we are all fucked.

[–] Shellofbiomatter@lemmus.org 10 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Not everyone, just the avarage person. Billionaires will be just fine and completely safe frome the consequences.

[–] amda@feddit.nl 2 points 1 hour ago

They'll probably make way more money still, somehow

"Am I shitting my pants right now or is someone else shitting them?"

[–] ZkhqrD5o@lemmy.world 7 points 21 hours ago

Donnie is understandably mad that Elon interrupted his work-time nap.

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 16 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

You mean Tesla, right?

Because SpaceX just got 25% over their 94x guess...

[–] Legonatic@lemmy.world 8 points 21 hours ago

I don't think the average trader is convinced of this at all. I think they just know to buy in early to ride the hype, then sell it once the hype dies down. Short term gains.

[–] Casterial@lemmy.world 12 points 23 hours ago

And if their value drops, just have your other company bail them out for triple their value and make your company double in value! Woooo!

[–] hemko@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 22 hours ago

I wish Elmo will be the first trillionare to be shot in the neck
