Blue shift occurs because young voters, low-income voters, and voters who relocate often are likely both to vote provisionally and to lean Democratic.

It also happens because Republicans like to make it difficult for people who are not cisgender wealthy white conservative christian men to vote.

Many states have little to no protections for workers to take time off to vote (most states provide 1-2 hours off), select polling locations that are difficult to walk or ride public transit to, and understaff workers in polling locations to ensure long wait times in non-white neighborhoods.

Then, when volunteer programs spring up to do things like drive people to the polls or distribute water and snacks to people in line, they outlaw those actions.

This is why they're also against absentee and provisional ballots, since they enable working-class, disabled, and other 'undesirable' people to vote.

You forgot that they close polling stations in districts that vote against them and make it illegal to give food and water to people in line to vote.

I explicitly mentioned making it illegal to give food and water to people waiting in line and included a link to a news article about the Georgia law that outlawed doing so.

That first point is a good one though, I'm not familiar with it but am totally unsurprised it's happening.

My point was that the latter part is to make the pain from the first part worse. It's a deliberate combination. Make waits longer and make people suffer during the wait.

Yeah... But it's the shithole I grew up in, and I can't imagine leaving my grandparents behind who are too old to move.

That's why I volunteer as an election inspector and with some local voter registration groups- we won't see things change until people feel empowered to make a difference and put someone other than a fascist, spineless fuck, or corporate-owned bastard in office.

When I got here a Michael said it was The Good Place, but I'm beginning to think he lied?

[–] TheMadCodger@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

We've been in the Bad Place all along?!

[–] HeHoXa@lemmy.zip 2 points 18 hours ago

You saw it too, didn't you?

The Red Mirage.

Which is the reason we might see Trump ordering a stop to counting votes once GOPs leading next election. He tried this before but now has sufficiently manipulated the officals in charge to get his way.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

He'll try, but it's not going to matter.

The only positive election news Donald has had has been the Republican primaries. His candidates have lost nearly every election in 2025 and 2026 and if the Blue MAGA party is still up 14% in November like they are right now, it'll be too overwhelming a response to rig.

For me, the truly worrying development was the Blue MAGA governor in Colorado pardoning a literal traitor who tried to help them rig an election. That she got off scot-free means others will, and that it's a simple matter of getting dirt on the right people at the right time.

The feds don't lead elections. The states control elections for a very good reason.

[–] Colonel_Panic_@eviltoast.org 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Ok, sure, but everything going on now is illegal on paper too. Trump is an illegitimate and illegal president. He is guilty of insurrection and can not hold any public office. Yet here we are. He tried to steal the last election and is guilty. And here we are. He SAed little kids. And here we are. He has broken thousands of laws that and one of which would put you or I in prison for a long time. And here we are. And on and on.

Please don't hide behind the "but legally he can't" or "but the system works this way". He has proven time and again that laws don't matter and rules don't matter as long as enough people let his crimes slide.

Yes states run elections, but what stops him from just declaring certain states as fraudulent or whatever lie he comes up with? If enough people go along with the lie he will continue on.

He shouldn't even be president NOW! Per the damn US Constitution that we are ALL just ignoring by letting him have power and a 2nd term!!!!! So please don't pretend he can't or won't try to get a 3rd term and more.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

I'm not mad at you, it's at him, but wtf he keeps getting away with all the horrible things and no one stops him, it probably won't stop until he dies.

[–] roofuskit@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

If you follow enough of the court battles you'll see that he's not getting away with it all.

[–] Colonel_Panic_@eviltoast.org 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Oh, I know that. But he's getting away with the ones that truly matter.

Just him holding office instead of being in prison for 20 life sentences being THE BIG ONES.

[–] roofuskit@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

That's not even close to true. Every single vindictive prosecution has fallen apart. There's quite a few more important cases he's losing but those don't make the big headlines or get drowned out by the war.

[–] GardenGeek@europe.pub 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Which won't stop the GOP officials to do what they're being told, will it?

I think the systems resiliance to Trumps influence we saw when he lost the first time can't be taken for granted, given one of the first things he did when regaining power was installing loyalists in many positions.

[–] shittydwarf@piefed.ca 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

People from red states can't read and write which makes it impossible to vote by mail

[–] Colonel_Panic_@eviltoast.org 1 points 17 hours ago

If MAGA could read your comment they'd be so angry at you right now.

[–] adarza@piefed.ca 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

ranked choice ballots could fail them spectacularly because i can see a lot of them refusing to put anything down next to a name that isn't 'their guy'

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Is that not allowed? If it's allowed, that's the system working as intended, even if it means they're wasting their secondary choice vote.

[–] Colonel_Panic_@eviltoast.org 2 points 17 hours ago

RC works just fine if you only select 1 and then stop. It just means that if it goes to the next phase "runoff" thing you didn't vote, so it's one less vote from you. Fine by me. I love to see Rs shooting themselves in the feet with their stupidity. Let em do it!
