General off-topic chat for the crew of startrek.website. Trek-adjacent discussions, other sci-fi television, navigating the Fediverse, server meta (within reason), selling expired cases of Yamok sauce, it’s all fair game.

I've never run a Roku. But I know some folks that have one and aren't such a fan of Fox. So I let them know. Because the same company that allows Fox News to spew their shit, now owns your device.

This is more or less confirming it. Roku's been in a death spiral for a while, and I saw that ads were showing on the home page now.

That's a shame, I didn't know they were in a death spiral. As far as I know they provide the best "plug into HDMI, get streaming video" product out there and it's not even close.

Making a good product isn't enough to be successful. Our economic model demands endless growth. It's a shame, but it's how we've allowed society to be structured.

They do sadly, and that's not saying Roku is good, it's saying how terrible everything else is. I now have 2 custom setups at home to avoid it, but I am a fraction of a fraction of their watchers.

I have a stick I use for traveling and it's great, I can throw it in my suitcase it can even connect to most weird hotel wifi that needs passwords or something.
