Meanwhile, the "nones" in the United States are at 28%. That's more than any other group.

When do they get some representation instead of constantly having to put up with xtian bullshit and their constant chest-thumping?

https://www.npr.org/2024/01/24/1226371734/religious-nones-are-now-the-largest-single-group-in-the-u-s

Of course, when xtians loooove to talk about "Judeo-Christian" whatever, they are almost always being disingenuous. That almost goes without saying. Jews are about 2.5% of the population; it's almost expected they are thrown a bone in such discourse and then mostly ignored.

What is absolutely stunning to me is that the 28% is ignored, almost constantly. And for a while, they were growing at nearly 1% per year, while xtians were dwindling about 1% per year....and yet, all we get to hear is about what the xtians want, how politicians can pander to these whiners even more, etc.

The reason for that, IMO, is that the "none" people are usually in the camp of "I don't practice any religion" vs "I despise every religion"; so it becomes like having a vegetarian option in a menu, it is good for the vegetarians and should not offend any reasonable omnivore.

The problem of course is the unfairness you point out, added to the fact that most religious people that get involved in these political fights are not in the "I am happy there is a vegetarian option for me", instead they are usually in the camp of "I am a vegetarian therefore YOU should not eat meat"

PS: the vegetarian vs omnivore comparison is just for examples, I know eating meat is bad for the environment and we should all reduce/eliminate it.

Heh. I'm not entirely sure if the vegetarians or the omnivores are the nones here?

As a vegetarian, I've definitely been around the veg*ns that behave nearly exactly like the newly converted born-again xtians often tend to do. Obnoxious and sanctimonious, and I don't know who they convince by behaving like that...

Conversely, I have had to break bread with omnivores that insist that I should be eating meat. Some legitimately think vegetarianism is life-threatening ( 🤣 ), but also, since I'm a man, much of the concern seems to be that not eating meat might make me gay/womanly, which a certain type of individual finds just as terrifying, LOL.

Religious nones are mainly non-denominational Christians. Plenty of them attend a local non-denominational church, I'm sure.

So much for being sure.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

Ok, that is more in line with what I imagined

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

so in Texas they don't even ask about other religions? basically if you are not "standard xtian" you are a "none"?

TIL Texas is even more backwards than I gave it credit for

[–] otterpop@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

We live in a representative democracy, and once those "none" candidates start winning, then they'll start pandering to that demographic. Thing is, proclaiming to be a "none" is still political suicide at the ballot box: https://news.gallup.com/poll/609344/felonies-old-age-heavily-count-against-candidates.aspx

Also, calling them Christians will not hurt you. You're a well spoken person so when you type xtian every time it's just perceived as an insult (at least by me) and isn't helping your discourse.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

Yeah, I realize that atheists are still considered unelectable, especially because a certain part of the country still thinks that you cannot be moral without a belief in supernatural entity, preferably the god Jehovah/Yahweh/Allah from the Bible.

I have met and know many people who literally believe the only thing holding people back from things like murder is religious belief. I had a roommate tell me I should be happy he's a xtian because otherwise I'd be at risk of getting murdered for my belief - by him, apparently!

You’re a well spoken person so when you type xtian every time it’s just perceived as an insult (at least by me) and isn’t helping your discourse.

It's just shorthand. No one should be offended by the abbreviation - it has a long history started by the xtians themselves.

"None" is only the largest category if you separate Catholics and Protestants. Some people on the internet might have strong opinions about that, but most silent majority Christians wouldn't make that distinction.

[–] otterpop@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Because the differences between Catholic or Protestant or Eastern Orthodox or non denominational Christians is miniscule when compared to the beliefs of an atheist. The broad category of Christians still hold a lot of similar beliefs to be true.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Well, they do have a tradition of murdering each other over those differences, so.... ¯\(ツ)/¯

But yes, I realize that when it is politically expedient to violate the rights of others, what tends to happen in the United States is that suddenly all these xtian groups do get lumped together to help fluff up the numbers.

Well, until they aren't - see the Defense Department excluding Mormons as being xtians, for example.
