Bizarre yellow flag infringement by Russel. What the hell is happening?

[โ€“] pturn1@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No further investigation... WTF?!? Should be lap deleted, if not a penalty for not slowing/lifting

[โ€“] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Apparently he got away with the small lift he did (which is more or less necessary to make the corner anyway) because it was only a single yellow at that point. Extremely lucky timing, Kimi would have had him otherwise I think.

[โ€“] Danitos@reddthat.com 10 points 1 week ago

That was so BS. He lifted earlier, but braked later, which resulted in him having the same apex speed than usual. Colapinto did the same thing last race and it resulted in him receiving a 10s penalty.

While everything was according to the rules this just makes me dislike Russell even more. He went against the spirit of the rules, safety rules for that matter, to get a good time on the board. Had he made a mistake in that corner he most likely would've gone straight into Verstappen. When something happens to him he's safety above everything else but when it happens to someone else he'll happily risk their lives for his benefit.

There was no infringement, just ambiguity in the way the information came up on the timing screen leading to commentator confusion.

The events:

  1. Max bins it.
  2. Single yellow flags and lights deployed. Inder these, drivers must show they have lifted in the sector.
  3. Kimi is immediately behind Max, is passing the light stand when it activates, and is looking in the opposite direction to the corner apex. He mistakenly reads it as a double yellow and aborts his lap.
  4. George arrives, correctly reads the single yellow, lifts, and passes the yellow sector.
  5. As he has pole through yellow, he is investigated as is routine. This is relayed to the timing screen.
  6. The Single yellow is escalated to double yellow.
  7. Kimi and George are on their in lap at this time. Their in lap time is deleted. The timing screen only mentions they have laps deleted without specific clarification.
  8. TV now has the information George is under investigation, that double yellow is in effect, and that George has a lap deleted. That these are not relating to the same lap is not part of the info TV gets. Needless confusion takes root, conspiracy theories abound, and the FIA cocks up yet another weekend.

This and Monaco show the system is not fit for F1.

It's a very dangerous precedent, even though the biggest problem is FIA/race control not flagging double yellows immediately.

[โ€“] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

The marshal waved the yellow immediately, then 20s later race control overruled the marshal and ordered double yellow.
