OnlyOffice appears to have removed their Android app from their repos: https://github.com/ONLYOFFICE/documents-app-android

It can still be found on an archive: https://archive.softwareheritage.org/browse/origin/directory/?origin_url=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2FONLYOFFICE%2Fdocuments-app-android

This means if you are de-Googled like me, they are no longer an option.

Perhaps coincidentally, they have also started making legal claims against the EuroOffice fork: https://github.com/ONLYOFFICE#%EF%B8%8F-legal-note

Pursuant to Section 7(b) of the License you must retain the original Product logo when distributing the program. Pursuant to Section 7(e) we decline to grant you any rights under trademark law for use of our trademarks.

Am I understanding this correctly that you can't remove the logo, but you also aren't allowed to use it as it's their trademark? So creating a legal fork is essentially impossible?

Section 10 of the AGPL covers these shenanigans.

You may not impose any further restrictions on the exercise of the rights granted or affirmed under this License.

It's argued that these additional clauses restrict who can create a fork of the code and thereby activates section 10.

[–] warmaster@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This. They wanted to libre-wash their software. But by using the AGPL, they have essentially sabotaged themselves successfully, to our benefit.

[–] Fmstrat@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It was the other way around. They added the clauses after they used AGPL. So they commercial washed their libre software.

[–] warmaster@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

I meant originally. They never wanted to be truly committed to FOSS. The binary blobs everywhere tell the whole story.

Perhaps, but:

This seemingly did not faze Euro-Office, which continues to supply its software.

https://www.xda-developers.com/onlyoffice-pulled-its-8-year-partnership-with-nextcloud-licensing-violations/

For now, Nextcloud and IONOS seem to think these claims aren't valid.

Unfortunately they don't have an Android fork.

That's brilliant. They have found a way to lock in free software. It's good that they have shown their cards now before Europe has moved to them for being an open source alternative.

Since 2016, ONLYOFFICE has distributed its software under the terms of the GNU Affero General Public License v3 (AGPLv3),

I think due to section 10 (see other comments) they havent actually found a way, and that's why Nextcloud and IONOS continue to move forward.

I would assume you can do something like

RandomOfficeSuite; powered by [Open office logo]

[–] Fmstrat@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I don't think they'll need to because of Section 10 (see other comments)

Collabora Office is the way for fully featured office suite on Android. Proton Docs/Sheets is not bad for something more casual with phone focused UI.

[–] Fmstrat@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I will take a look at this one. Does it require the server side to be running? I'm not a fan of server side because it's a streaming session vs HTML-based.

[–] BladeFederation@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Collabora does not, it is only on device, based on Libre Office. I save LibreOffice files in Tresorit for cloud sync because Proton Drive does not have a Linux client. Collabora allows you to open and edit files from Tresorit and resave it there instead of downloading, editing, and reuploading. Ideally I make the original file on Linux since my default save location can be Tresorit, and edit on Android, but I can always upload a template to Tresorit manually on Android, and then reopen to edit and save in Tresorit.

Proton Docs is cloud only.

Based in Riga, Latvia, OnlyOffice owner Ascensio System SIA was a subsidiary of Russian-based New Communication Technologies

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OnlyOffice

This should be the reason for the fork.

[–] Fmstrat@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That is actually one of the reasons, yes. They just say "transparency".

"Can't terraform Moscow using Russian technologies", the NATO vassal states probably

[–] nitroemdash@lemmy.wtf 3 points 1 week ago

A large amount of tech was based by people and enterprises who emigrated from Russia and are no longer bound by their laws.

So is EuroOffice already available, also as android app? I'll switch in an instance to get rid of shenanigans like these.

Will EuroOffice also work in Canada? Dumb question, perhaps, but these are the times...

[–] 791e@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Last time I checked (about 2 weeks ago) you would have to build it yourself, I don’t think they distribute precompiled binaries yet. (Although what I did try to replace were the Desktop Editors, not the Android app) Also, I see no reason why it shouldn’t work in Canada, I believe the reason it’s called that is just because it’s being developed with European organisations in mind.

[–] DUMBLUCK@sub.community 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I thought it’s open source

[–] Fmstrat@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Sort off. The main body of OO is, but there are binary blobs for some MS compatibility, etc. This is why EuroOffice has started as a fork.
