This is a very interesting article about the 90s musical pop group "Ace of Base".

Actually, that they have ties to the neo-Nazi movement isn't in dispute, or at all a secret. A few years ago, Vice music editor Ben Shapiro wrote an article that revealed that Ace of Base founder Ulf Ekberg was once in a Nazi punk band called Commit Suiside.

Yah, I read 'Cracked Magazine' for the articles.

I'm sure Ben was too busy failing as a screenwriter at the time to have worked in music journalism.

Just like the other Matt Walsh. The one they call the talented Matt Walsh.

I remember reading that article in 2015. I believe that guy actually claimed that he was no longer a white supremacist by the time he was in Ace of Base. Some of their lyrics definitely do sound very dog-whistley though.

Never trust a former white supremacist who is not a vocal antifascist.

I thought it commonplace to sing the national anthem at sport venues?

burgers when they hear the word "base":

The name is most likely a reference to the Keroman Submarine Base, a massive U-boat launching and docking facility constructed by the Nazis in the French town of Loriant.

burgers when they hear the words "happy nation":

A nation that dreams of the perfect man? And then you cap that verse off with the word "brotherhood"? You're right, I'm completely crazy for suggesting this might be a love song to Adolf Hitler.

burgers when they hear a song about casual sex:

Right off the bat, a quick scan of the lyrics reveals that it's basically about a woman who leeches off society by tricking men into getting her pregnant so she doesn't have to work.

burgers when they reminisce about the 90s:

A time when ... winning a war in the Middle East was a thing we were still capable of as a country.

lol hell yeah there are a bunch of cryptofash and even blatant fash in the nordics but don't blame them for your own blatant fash country which has been going strong for as long as fash have existed

burgers when they hear the word "base":

Did you read the rest of that section? Keroman was literally the "base of aces." This isn't burgers misconstruing stuff, this is someone noticing a bit too many coincidences in a band lead by a straight up neo Nazi

i think there's like a 50/50/50 change (for a total of 150%) that it's either a) a nazi referencing a semi-obscure nazi military base which is gross but no one picked up on the reference anyway or b) the dumb story of a recording studio being called a "base" or c) them meaning to call it "ace of bass" but their english not being good enough to distinguish the homophones "base" and"bass" especially since they translate to the same word in swedish

not trying to defend some nazi doing shit but i think it's more likely it's just shit rather than specifically nazi shit

Some academic wrote a piece rebutting this article and they had this choice line written:

I mean, for one thing fascism is inherently syncretic as fuck. That's part of its schtick.

But moreover, is this clown completely oblivious to the fact that this contradictory colonial exoticism and hermetic nationalism is a perfect description for Nazi Germany? They literally had global expeditions to seek out lost Aryans and to find artefacts to establish the "truth" of the Nazi pseudoarchaeolgy through the Ahnenerbe Organisation, which was headed by none other than Himmler himself.

Their whole use of Eurasian symbolism epitomises Nazi Germany's colonial exoticism which was central to their hermetic nationalism ffs.

Imagine being so fucking insulated that you forget that the Nazis were the main bad guy in Indiana Jones because of all their weird archeology stuff.

[-] ikiru@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 year ago

Damn, this is a surprisingly good piece of investigative journalism from Cracked of all places.

Ranting about Black and Brown people by writing music heavily influenced by Black and Brown people. Nazis' brains are so beautifully smooth I just imagine their heads as pearl-filled clams.

Some unintentionally 👀 moments from a random music subreddit:

You don’t really have to look further than the lyrics he’s written. “I Pray” and “Perfect World” are good examples.

After the big Thailand tsunami he got a truck and supplies and went there to help in any way he could. He talked about digging through debris and helping helping recover bodies. He started a relief fund, too.

He’s good friends with the Clintons (Chelsea was a big fan).

He’s quoted as saying: “I think Canada sets an example for other countries. It’s open and tolerant”.

He’s a supporter of LGBT rights, and along with AOB performed at multiple gay pride events.

He’s been involved in the UN and the G8/G7 summit. He’s a strong advocate for stopping climate change, pollution, etc.
