Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

The MoU is over a-little-trolling

They're breaking the MoU tromp

It's even more absurd because the US is saying that the Iranian government is fractured. However it is the US government that has inconsistent behavior, Trump says that the MoU is over but CENTCOM says that the MoU is still on.

I'm certain that that the dems' "How do we put the ball in the hoop for the easiest layup of all time" committee is hard at work. It's going to be hilarious when the dems ~~get~~ eat shit in the election even though Trump is the most criminal, corrupt, awful president of all time and he's still fighting a war involving a global energy chokepoint. The dems will be flummoxed how their highly uninspiring kitchen table messaging of "Trump's hurting you in the pocketbook!" didn't inspire voters.

Edit. The typo has charm.

Axios and their reporter Barak Ravid have been narrating the US actions during the Iran war. He has been reporting US actions as they happen or sometime before they happen. Barak Ravid served as a member of IOF Unit 8200, Israel's equivalent of the US NSA. He could be an Israeli asset. He speaks directly with White House officials and reports what they tell him to report.

Yesterday Barak Ravid reported that the US had given a Saturday deadline to declare that the Strait of Hormuz is open. US official told Barak Ravid that there would be "harsh consequences" if Iran did not comply. Barak Ravid referred to this as an "ultimatum" for Iran. The US attack on Iran that occurred today is the result of this threat.

A U.S. official said the Iranians reached out to the administration after two days of skirmishes earlier this week and sought further talks to resolve the dispute.

"They told us, 'We screwed up. We made a mistake. Let's keep talking,'" the official claimed.

Baghaei denied on Friday that Iran had requested negotiations with the U.S. and claimed Iran only agreed to a request by the Qatari mediators to discuss the matter.

The U.S. official added that a power struggle is underway inside the Iranian regime over implementing the MOU and the next steps in negotiations with the Trump administration.

"There are elements within their system that want to reach a deal, but we can't make decisions for them. They need to get things under control," one U.S. official said.

The U.S. officials said they expect Iran to issue a statement after Saturday's meeting in Oman.

"We want them to publicly say that they will stop shooting at ships and explicitly, or at least implicitly, acknowledge that they screwed up. We are working on that now," one U.S. official said. "We expect the Iranians to say ... that every channel in the strait will be open and that it will be toll-free."

A second U.S. official said there will be harsh consequences if Iran refuses. "If it is not their position [tomorrow], it is not gonna be a great day for them," the official said.

The U.S. has already launched two rounds of strikes on Iran in retaliation for the Hormuz attacks. Thursday was a quieter day, as Trump signaled openness to returning to diplomacy.

One U.S. official said the U.S. and Iran have made progress toward a nuclear deal during three weeks of direct and indirect negotiations.

"We are talking to people with authority there who say they want a deal," one U.S. official said.

But officials also said the Hormuz crisis has raised serious questions about whether Iran will ever agree to a nuclear deal — or whether it would stay committed.

One official stressed that Trump has given U.S. negotiators space and time to pursue a nuclear deal with Iran, "but not a lot of space and time." The official added that plans are being drawn up for alternative options if no nuclear deal is reached.
