wasn't the police supposed to arrest those ICE agents? but can they arrest themselves?
Maybe someone will set another building on fire.
Police providing security at the courts should be arresting those ice agents for kidnapping since they don't have jurisdiction, but we all know why they don't.
I'm not holding my breath for the ethics of the NYPD
I wonder what it feels to work so hard thru the police academy and under so much accountability, but then become subservient to a bunch of ex-bounty hunters with 2 weeks training and no accountability.
I'd be pissed off if I was a policeman.
It feels good when what you want as a police man is stifled by "accountability", but you get to see the ice agents doing it with impunity. They're not pissed, they talk about how awesome it is in the locker room.
Some of those that work forces
It's not called a police state for nothing.
Try telling the gestapo that they don't have authority.
If they did that, they'd be charged with terrorism or something and get 100 years in the slammer.
We need to stop making up “if they did” scenarios and just do it. Appeasement has never made anything better against fascists.
I was just describing why the fuzz don't touch ICE officers. I wasn't advocating anything.
I am, arm yourselves and trim those fuses shorter.
You first
Hmm, an unaccountable paramilitary force that flouts the law without consequences? It's getting really really fascist in this motherfucker.
And people are still doing nothing about it, and no, protests are not doing something about it
What do you want to be done? The smart but feels bad move is to keep taking notes and keep taking names. The regime won't last forever and a blue wave is already coming.
For now, the thing being done will be more court fights between state and federal (aka notekeeping).
Just like in Germany in the 30s.
Why call them arrests? These are kidnappings.
Wonder what Mamdani has to say about this? Or if he can/will do anything about it?
He's brown, so if he makes too much of a stink NYPD will fire several warning shots into his back while he's "aggressively" tying a shoe.
Honestly, given how he capitulated to the NYPD, I’d imagine he can’t do much. I somehow doubt he would be allowed.
What do you mean by this? First I’m hearing of it
He'd campaigned on reining in the NYPD, but as soon as he was elected he specifically started praising them and hasn't done anything to curb some of the... well, more problematic elements. It is assumed that they threatened him or something, because him doing nothing about them goes against his supposed worldview and what he campaigned on. It's very well possible that the realities of being in office or just that his ability to affect things as Mayor isn't as powerful or robust as he'd thought. In any case, it's one of the few elements of his campaign he's gone back on.
Hard to say. Mamdami has a lot of work to do and reforming the NYPD during these times is one of the larger tasks. That might be more for something during his 2nd term if he gets that far.
But I wouldn't be surprised if he got a lot of flak internally over these issues once he got in.
Oh yeah, I agree. I think it’s dumb to expect everything to get better overnight. The fact that he’s done as much as he has is amazing.
Most people have no choice but to capitulate to an organized and armed force, regardless of station in life.
It's an important lesson. One the working class should take to heart.
This is all theater. The courts will hem and haw about rights and rule of law but ultimately wont do jack shit all to cement the SS...sorry ICEs position above the law and ability to take who ever when ever they want from where ever.
You're not wrong. The court was complicit as they can declare the "arrests" illegal.
Minor correction, these aren't the SS they are the SA. This is why we need to fight now, they're not yet organized enough to be the SS, they're still forming. We still have a chance to create enough political pressure to disband them.
2 years down the line and they'll issue the third final warning to stop doing illegal things, which the appeals court will immediately stay because a few months without optimal inductions into the concentration camps is considered an irreversible harm.
All the ice agents look like they have pink eye.
