I'm so glad the US didn't win like that with all the political bullshit. It would've looked like we cheated our way in had we progressed any further, once ol' shittypants waded in.

[–] arcine@jlai.lu 5 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Argentina, Venezuela, and the USA ; should be banned from the next world cup.

In a world where FIFA isn't the second most corrupt organisation on earth, that is (second to the United States government).

[–] dustyData@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Venezuela has never even classified, so why a ban?

[–] MissJinx@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Argentina did quietly what germany tried to do loudly, it exterminated everyone not white from it's country, but nobody hates on them enough because they are in south america and nobody looks there. I'm glad people are realizing how shitty they are

[–] minus@lemmy.zip 2 points 7 hours ago

So they killed all people of color in concentration camps?

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 51 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

Fuck the US though. In fact, fuck the World Cup too.

[–] MajorasTerribleFate@lemmy.zip 2 points 10 hours ago

What? But it was four times better than any FIFA held before! Five times, they're telling us today!

[–] twinnie@feddit.uk 11 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I’ve got no hate for the US team, it was Trump and Infantino.

[–] bampop@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

I feel sorry for the US team, Trump's interference put them in such a shameful situation. Everything he touches turns to shit.

As a non soccer fan, I don't get it. Why don't we like Argentina? Don't they have a pretty strong team?

[–] Jiral@lemmy.world 14 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

They played incredibly dirty, fouled nonstop, deserved even more red cards than they got, at the same time they played super lame football, debated with the referee nonstop, were disrespectful to the winning team afterwards and physically assaulted a Spanish player after the game without any provication from the other side.

Rarily has a team in the finals misbehaved more than that.

[–] dustyData@lemmy.world 4 points 8 hours ago

And on top of all of that, corrupt FIFA will look the other way and do nothing about it because they're currently the princesses of the football world. There's just too much money tied to sponsorships that depend on Argentinian stars, so FIFA will do everything in their power to keep the money flowing, even if that means tolerating a team that undermines sportsmanship and integrity. FIFA went through a corruption crisis in 2015 and learned absolutely nothing.

[–] ComfortableRaspberry@feddit.org 12 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

I didn't watch it either but heard they started a (physical) fight after losing the game. That could be a reason

One of many sources

[–] sachamato@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

Everyone has always hated Argentina, and kind of argentinians (not based on racist motives, they are just incredible ass holes and sore losers). When I recently saw Swiss people hating on them, that was the last straw.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

All Argentinians are assholes but I'm not being racist!

Eh, ok

[–] TimboSlice@discuss.online 1 points 7 hours ago

People can't dislike assholes and not be racist.

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 286 points 1 day ago (7 children)

Nah fuck the usa corruption shit too. And the shit usa put visiting countries through

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 63 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I would have expected people to be more angry at the US's actions than Argentina's.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_Trump%E2%80%93FIFA_red_card_controversy

During the 2026 World Cup, FIFA suspended the implementation of a one-game suspension that United States men's national soccer team player Folarin Balogun had received after he was sent off in a round of 32 match victory against the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team for a foul on Tarik Muharemović. Balogun's suspension was delayed for a probationary period of one year under the Article 27 authority of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. United States president Donald Trump had directly called FIFA president Gianni Infantino asking him to review the red card decision. The decision allowed Balogun to participate in the United States' Round of 16 match against Belgium despite the red card remaining in effect. Belgium won the match 4–1, with Balogun playing almost the entire match

Another controversy, similar to when the events were hosted in Russia and Qatar, involves host countries immigration policies. The controversy during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, United States immigration and visa policies under the second Trump administration, which have affected players, officials, journalists, and fans from several qualified nations. A travel ban affecting citizens of 39 countries—including World Cup participants Haiti, Iran, Ivory Coast, and Senegal—has prevented most ordinary fans from those countries from obtaining visas to attend matches in the United States, though exemptions were granted for athletes, coaches, and essential support staff, as well as dual citizens, permanent residents, and valid visa holders. A separate visa bond program initially required fans from five African nations to pay deposits of up to $15,000, a requirement that was temporarily suspended in May 2026 for ticketed fans. Iraqi striker Aymen Hussein was detained for seven hours upon arrival at O'Hare International Airport, while Somali referee Omar Artan was denied entry and was unable to officiate at the tournament.

I think it's because football fans have been dealing with this crap from Argentina basically ever. They are a dirty and underhanded team at all times, and that generates hatred from championship to championship.

Nah. Fuck the USA and FIFA both.

[–] fodor@lemmy.zip 46 points 23 hours ago

FIFA is so dirty. All they do is rob hosting cities blind and then accept bribes. That organization needs to collapse. Sports should be affordable to watch, and who caves to Trump twice in one year anyway?

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 17 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Out of all these countries, the only one you have a problem with is Argentina?

[–] MrKoyun@lemmy.world 5 points 16 hours ago

Not really the point of the image

[–] h_ramus@piefed.social 14 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

Why isn't Paraguay shunned anymore? They played like thugs against most teams, famously against France.

Didn’t watch it at all, what did Argentina do?

[–] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 85 points 1 day ago (6 children)

With the exception of Messi, they all played like petulant, dirty thugs all through the world cup. Especially against Egypt in their quarter-final and against Spain in the final. They also politicized the semi-final against England with a stupid banner.

[–] Hawk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 16 hours ago

They also started a fistfight after they lost the final and turned their backs on Spain when they received the trophy.

Honestly, this team should be disqualified from the next world cup, but instead they're being celebrated.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Messi was trying to get Cucurella red card. Cucurella was showing him that the other player was hit in the mouth and Messi started telling the referee that he covered his mouth to insult him. Was arguing that Cucurella should get red card for this. Incredibly desperate and pathetic.

[–] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Wow, that's shameful.

is this the "today i feel gay. today i feel migrant worker." guy?

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 30 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I didn't like that the US and Canadian broadcasts always had to pan to the corrupt stooge Infantino a couple times every game, during play, but I did like that I could hear the stadium crowd or my local watch party crowd boo each time.

I didn't watch, because of corrupt FIFA and Temu Hitler

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 6 points 21 hours ago
