Tried using old reddit to browse all. Been doing it for years and years.

I guess fuck me, right. I dont even have an account and have no plans to make one.

Edit: oddly enough its letting me through now. Not sure exactly what's flagging me but reddit has been fucky for months on my end.

Whats the likelihood of a man in the middle attack?

Just made this account as a direct result of this. Here's to a bright future for the fediverse!

[–] radau@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 day ago

I wouldn't be surprised if they have this on an A/B setup to gauge the result of this against smaller sample sizes then determine if they flip the switch or wait

I finally deleted my reddit, Facebook, Instagram. I still get dopamine cravings, but you guys do a pretty good job filling in.

[–] ghodawalaaman@programming.dev 1 points 16 hours ago

you are welcome :)

This is the end of Reddit for me. Haven't logged in since the API changes killed mobile apps.

[–] SlicingBot@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 day ago

I was kind of waiting for this to happen. I knew my days of lurking were numbered. I wonder if this will dramatically affect traffic to the site in general?

[–] auzy1@lemmy.world 42 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Yep. At this point, since you can't read the site without logging in, everything in it should be deindexed by Google

[–] raze2012@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Google had a special deal to scrape Reddit's data right? That might carve out some special exceptions.

BTW, hello. I tried the fediverse out around 2022 through kbin (which seems to be dead?) then drifted off. Haven't had a reddit account since 2023 (and my mains were deleted around 2020), but I swore I'd force myself off Reddit when old.reddit. I guess that time is now.

[–] ggtdbz@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 day ago

Mbin is the successor to Kbin. Piefed exists, gets a bit more features but there seems to be some frustration I’m not very familiar with and won’t comment on. Lemmy so far has been rock solid. All of these communicate together.

I quit Reddit cold turkey when they killed the API and it’s still one of the biggest changes in my adult life and frankly I still miss the sheer variety and volume. But this is alright too.

I havent touched google for what seems like years.

Which is depressing because the sites popularity was based on easy straight forward searching. That got so lost along the way.

[–] DahGangalang@infosec.pub 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Been trying to get away from google for a long while too, but DuckDuckGo feels like its been degrading significantly lately. I could give examples, but dont want to type and novel atm.

Is there any better privacy respecting search alternative out there besides DDG?

[–] raze2012@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

if you can afford a paid option, I've heard good things about Kagi. It basically uses several backends (including google) but cuts out the ad junk. And it reportedly tends to give you better results, or at least less sponsored crap.

It's something I wanted to try out more once I can get a dang job.

[–] some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world 0 points 19 hours ago

Can confirm, kagi has been great. I use their search as well as their news feed. They even have a filter for fediverse threads. (It doesn't ever return many results, but they're definitely ahead of the curve by having a replacement for the Google to Reddit pipeline ready to go.)

I find it worth paying for just to avoid dealing with google and Bing. Most of the "alt" search engines are just skins for those two anyway. I figure that's just the cost to continue procrastinating setting up searx on my homelab, and I'm fine with that.

I'm finding that Ecosia works better than Google for many things.

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I agree, but you can still browse new reddit without logging in, mostly. Also Google still lists Twitter which also requires a login, so they were never going deindex it anyway.

..and, here I am. After 17 years on Reddit. Fuck spez and, corporate greed.

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yeah I’d use old to prowl some subreddits that don’t have a good alternative.

Goodbye forever.

[–] 1800doctorb@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

I loved lurking /r/peloton and /r/triathlon, but there doesn’t seem to be those communities in here yet.

This is very disappointing

[–] Daft_ish@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Seems to be only r/all... for now.

Right now I cannot access any at all.

I've been wanting a reason to finally quit anyway. :)

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It was other ones for me. Not just /all

[–] raze2012@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

yeah, I just go directly to subreddits. I can't access anything. heck, I was on a specific post last night, then refreshed the tab to a login screen.

[–] Iusedtobeanalien@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Ye olde Man in the middle attack

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

Finally. Let that site die.

[–] inmate_p01135809@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Deleted my account I had since Digg v4 once they removed third-party app access. I was lurking occasionally for news and memes, but this has finally ended that. RIP old Reddit.

Didn’t Twitter or whatever it is now and instagram start the same thing a while ago?

[–] Reygle@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's a funny way to spell lemmy.world

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

It could be meta too. It's hard to say what corp it is, but I suspect it's a corp too.

[–] 50MYT@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

For those still using nice subs that have not yet migrated:

You can get a revance version of the Reddit app. Basically it's the premium paid features, without the bullshit. At no cost of course
