People will tell you a lot if you pay attention. People ask me all the time "how did you know...?" but they told me, either in behavior or mannerisms or whatever. Just be observant and you'll pick up a lot more than people know they're letting on.

As an autistic, I'm fucked

[-] cynar@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Interestingly, your not. A lot of it is learned, rather than instinctive. The only bit you get fucked on is the mental energy side of things.

If you want a primer, the show "Lie to me" is quite good. At least season 1 is. It is a drama, but actually has a good scientific backing, at least in season 1.

Yeah body language and mannerisms can tell a lot about a person. What's that quote? "You say a lot when you aren't saying anything"?

[-] do_it_out_of_spite@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

The quote I always heard was "Actions speak louder than words". I wonder if they mean something slightly different though.

They way I can see it is your quote "You say a lot when you aren't saying anything" feels very passive, as in the way you carry yourself on the day to day.

Whereas "Actions speak louder than words" is more active (has that word in it alredy) as in how you treat and carry yourself around others.

Both can be seen as a way to observe the social queues that aren't completely verbal to see what kind of person someone is. Just something to ponder I guess.

This isn't even necessarily just true for non-verbal stuff...I've had people ask me how I knew things they had personally told me, to my face, about themselves. Some people don't remember everyone they tell something too and can be suprised later that you know something.

Cars queueing outside of Jiffy Lubes would be easy to steal. They’ve left their keys in the ignition, most of the time the people are just waiting inside, and won’t raise an alarm or call the cops for maybe 20 min or so. I always try to stay with my car until it’s going inside.

[-] ellaella_ayayay@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

I always wondered if others thought the same thought I have, and you just answered it. Lots of restaurant valet services in my city, and I've seen some of them literally grab my keys from off the top of my tire. Meaning an entire parking lot packed with cars with their respective keys all in the same spot..

[-] dromicieomimus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

i don’t leave my car at the lube shop, once i watched the mechanics lock the keys inside the vehicle in the bay next to me. they were able to get it open, but i was glad i stayed in my car, even though it was hot that day. i like to see what they’re doing and know that my keys are with me.

Pets and children are only slightly flawed reflections of their owners/parents.

Just how many fewer birds there are around than there were even a few years ago. But I guess that makes sense with insect numbers plummeting, it's just bugs don't look so pretty at my feeders, and my feeders stay full longer than they used to.

[-] SgtAStrawberry@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Maybe they all moved over to me, we have a lot more birds nowadays then we had a few years ago.

[-] wwaxwork@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

That's good to know, unfortunately over our lifetime the number of adult breeding pairs of birds in the US has dropped by 2.9 billion, that's billion with a b. But if you've got an influx in your area put up some nesting boxes and plays some sexy music. We need more birds.

[-] SgtAStrawberry@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I will look into nesting boxes, might be a bit difficult, we don't really have that many good areas.

But we do provide first class catering during the winter and that is extremely appreciated.

I wish people in groups would tell the guy who is talking way too loud to calm down. I can hear my guy over the noise of the entire bar or baseball game talking about this airplane cockpit or some shit, like crazy loud. Turn to look at the people with him and they just look awkward. You’re his friend tell him to shut the fuck up.

[-] RealismWelcome@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

People in Germany actually do that.

Coastal erosion - I don't hear enough about it in this place where a bunch of people live right on the coast :/
