With all the talk about lemmy.ml defederating from threads I’ve been wondering what Aussie.zone’s stance is on the matter.

Tldr of what I've posted elsewhere; I'm undecided at this stage but leaning towards defederating. When more information is available I'll make a post soliciting feedback, I don't want to make a change like this without user feedback.

You are doing all the hard work to run this instance, I for one, respect and support any decisions you have to make.

I would prefer to stay on an instance that is federated with Threads; The whole point of federation is to interact with other instances, regardless of who runs them, as long as they don’t push offensive content (spam, hate, worse).

If Threads does not behave in a respectful manner to smaller instances (and all instances are going to be smaller than Threads) they should be blocked.

Right now though, I support a “suck it and see” approach. If we (you, the server, other users) are not enjoying the experience with Threads, block them and walk away from them.

I agree, I want to choose this for myself.

I hadn't thought of it, but one of the admins on the mastodon part of the fediverse made a good point: We might not have a choice, we might all have to defederate and blackhole threads because they could hit the entire fediverse with so much traffic it'll destroy our servers and our internet connections.

With the talk going around of creating a dynamic Blocklist to defederate instances infested with trolls/bots it wouldn't be to hard to create another one to block instances federated with Meta. This would fix the problem you mention.

Threads is Facebook, there is no see how it goes. I thought everyone came to lemmy to get away from Facebook/reddit/twitter/instagram.

Defederating with for-profit instances should go without saying. They are motivated to financially exploit communities like this, at the cost of the users.

Sigh. Am I really going to have to run personal instances to not deal with this bullshit.

[-] No1@aussie.zone 8 points 1 year ago

Bro, can I join your personal instance so I don't need a personal instance? 😁

[-] tuff_wizard@aussie.zone 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

that's a great idea! lets all join his personal instance so we don't have to deal with this bullshit.

P.S. You'll be defederating from threads, right u/quasar?

He’s defederating. But keeping Amazon when they arrive. I’m getting rid of both on mine. But I do like me some Microsoft 😋

All jokes aside, you bring up a good point. This will be only the first of many decisions to be made.

Lodion's been doing a great job, and I'm cool with going with his wait and see approach.

I can see a lot of old discussions from earlier in internet (and before) history being rehashed, but it's a good thing. A lot of people have known nothing except the big social media sites. So this is a refreshing opportunity for a different approach.

The New Hope.

Good point, and optimistic which is lovely.. if i equate history to this it might be more like a betrayal of greed and fleeting profit that sparks the implosion that results in you and I taking pitch forks to eachother..

But time will tell all 😀

And then, perhaps, one day, you and I could federate our personal instances, as we find we are not so far apart after all 😀

Let’s break away from this place and start somewhere new.. free of all these agendas..

We’ll call it.. the kevination. Built on our shared and uncompromising principles..

Wouldn't it be worth waiting and seeing if they even decide to Federate in the first place before jumping to this kind of measure?

It seems premature to start pre-emptively blocking them if they were just building their own separate app network, rather than federating it with other Lemmy instances.

[-] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 2 points 1 year ago

Couldn’t a wait and see also be a case of not federating initially and deciding to federate later if they are a respectful instance?
