“Our oath of office and resulting duty to the Constitution forbids association with an organization led by a Marxist,” read the language the commission voted to send to the ALA.

Neat trick considering that said document predates and therefore has no concept of Marxism.

I feel like public libraries are a pretty good canary in the coal mine

Shit's scary

“We ought not promote, celebrate or support what scripture condemns,” said Dana Gonzalez, who was in favor of withdrawing, before quoting scriptures from the Bible she said condemned “what Emily has stated,” referring to the ALA president-elect.

I am sure that the American Libraries Association is shattered that they are losing the learned theological commentary of Dana Gonzalez and the rest of the Montana State Library Commission.

Oh hey, another thing to send my sister who was considering moving to Montana in order to get out of Texas.

Incredibly fucked up, the kids in that state aren't going to stand a chance getting accepted to universities out of state. Which is their plan, I guess. If the only schools that will accept them are in Montana and the only jobs that recognize those Montanan degrees are in Montana you have a full workforce from crib to grave.

It's a real bummer that the gatekeepers of knowledge in this country increasingly seem to be foxes guarding the henhouse.

Of course the conservatives are bringing religion places where it shouldn't be.

Also, I don't even know how having a Marxist leading the free public library association makes any difference. Do they think the library should be more capitalistic? Sounds like a great way to make sure no one goes there.

These people wouldn’t know what actual Marxism was if a copy of Das Kapital hit them in the face.

The library I work at has had Moms for Liberty attend a couple of meetings demanding we withdraw books that are against their beliefs, no specific titles, just a general demand. They have also said we need to stop allowing the staff from joining ALA or the state library association. If this upsets you at all, please go to a library board meeting and voice your support for the library. Some even let you write in. Groups like MFL make it a point to attend a lot of the meetings in hopes to get their way, and it’s working in some areas.

I’m very curious as to how the same Constitution that can’t keep up with upgrades in arms tech over time was able to ban consorting with Marxists when Marx himself wouldn’t be born for decades. Neat trick. Also, have these people read founding father Thomas Paine? Pretty sure he and Marx would have hung out and shot the shit if they had the chance. (I don’t mean the librarians. I have no doubt they were forced into this, for the most part. They, I assume, have read a book.)
