I think the problem is that some views do not deserve to have a platform. In theory, having a reasoned discussion about climate change is a good thing and should be welcomed at a university. In practice, someone coming to a university to talk about how climate change is not real is not going to have a reasoned discussion. Saying the university should not take sides is good in theory, but in practice allowing equal time for climate change deniers as for climate change supporters in the name of free speech does not actually support free speech (given the supporters are 97%).

What is NET in this context. No estimated time?

Hmm I don't think I'll watch this one live. I have work tomorrow 😆

Is this the last mission of the year?

I have about 6 or 8 ethernet cables in use plus more in my spare cables box, and I don't remember ever paying for one. Where do they come from? I never seem to run out.

As someone else commented, it appears that the license isn't free because when you share it the new person now owes the original author a beer if they ever meet them, so the middle person isn't free to do whatever they like because of the ongoing obligation being forced on their users.

Ah yes that makes sense.

Their status page has an update on what happened.

Service instability due to network incident Resolved - Due to an undocumented change in an operating system update shipped by one of our network equipment vendors, network devices in our Frankfurt datacenter experienced an unexpected partial failure.

This incident impacted primarily Proton Mail, with approximately 50% of users who were routed to the impacted datacenter experiencing intermittent downtime for approximately 1 hour. Due to redundant systems, no data or emails were lost, but some email delivery may have been delayed.

Incident report: Because the failure was partial, it was not sufficient to trigger a failover. Due to the unique circumstances surrounding this failure, a significant amount of confusion led to a longer than usual delay before the infrastructure engineers on shift made the call to failover to an alternative site.

That restored services, with approximately 30 minutes of lingering low-level instability while load was rebalanced. Investigation that took place in parallel uncovered the undocumented operating system change in the network device update that was rolled out earlier this month. Impacted network devices were updated, and the Frankfurt datacenter brought back into production with no user impact. Proton routinely conducts testing before rolling out software patches to our network equipment and rolls them out gradually.

Unfortunately, this problematic undocumented change was not discovered because it only created issues under specific load conditions (indeed, the new software had been running for weeks without issues).

We apologize for the longer than usual incident response time. In the coming days, we will be analyzing our response to this incident to reduce future reaction times.

Sounds good!

Perhaps take on board the comments on this post, draft up a proposed template on the repo, and then perhaps do a new post asking for feedback? Is it worth creating a community for those interested to follow if they want to discuss, ask questions, propose ideas, etc, or is that better done on the repo?

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 3 days ago

I'm wondering if the git option is best? A public github repo is a bit more permanent, means it stays available into the future even if it stops getting maintained.

The main issue with that is the technical hurdle for contributing, but I don't see why people can't comment on this post or future ones with comments if they don't want to do a pull request.

I prefer that over the Google docs option, and Lemmy comments are good for discussion but I think we need an "official" place to point people to. We can still discuss on Lemmy before making updates.

I thought it was free as in speech not free as in beer? So if it costs a beer then isn't it still free (as in speech)? Or is this a OSI vs FSF difference?

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 3 days ago

That's really cool, thanks for sharing!

That part with the gobs of hot molten glass flying everywhere is very Star Wars like(from about 5:00 to 5:40).

It also looks super quick, pumps out bottles like crazy!

You may have seen my post trying to troubleshoot my server. It seems either the motherboard or CPU is dead, so hey, why not do an upgrade?

I use this server for a lot. It's used for a Jellyfin server, sometimes multiple streams at once. I think I'd like hardware transcoding, I want it to be really good at streaming Jellyfin, and preferably multiple streams at once without issue.

It's also going to be used for hosting Zusam, a kind of private forum for friends/family - a key thing is that this will also be transcoding videos and photos to downscale them (uses FFmpeg).

I also host Photoprism, which will be generating thumbnails and indexing photos.

In addition to this, I also host a bunch of other stuff, I think the key ones are Nextcloud AIO and PaperlessNGX (which does OCR) as these would be more demanding. Then another 10 or so services that aren't too demanding and have low usage so are unlikely to be an issue outside of making sure I have enough RAM.

I use it as a backup server as well. It receives borg backups from other devices and backs up itself to a backup HDD, and does cloud backups, but has a fast LAN connection and decent internet speed (300Mbps) and this is scheduled overnight so probably doesn't affect anything.

I also use it for playing games with the kids! Normally Stardew Valley but sometimes more demanding games.

Many of the hosted services have family members also using them. I want to make sure I can do things like the Photoprism indexing and Zusam video downscaling while not affecting the experience using Jellyfin or other services. It's all good if this happens by limiting cores for transcoding. It would be nice to be able to use it for more demanding gaming as well, but I understand if it's a bit hard to keep everything going nicely with a demanding game running that doesn't limit its multithreading.

Possibly related for compatibility purposes:

  • all my hard drives are 3.5" HDD or 2.5" SSD SATA connections. I have 2 SSDs and 2 HDDs.
  • I also have a Radeon rx5700xt graphics card. Would be nice to be able to keep using this.
  • I'm currently running a full desktop environment (Linux Mint - Cinnamon) on it, for the purposes of playing the games. So needs to work well with Linux and also play nicely with wireless Xbone controllers.
  • Case is Mid sized. Specifically this one.

And the current CPU is an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, in case you want to tell me what I have is fine and I don't need an upgrade 🥲

What are some good options for an upgrade?

Edit: Thanks for the suggestions. Lots of people showing me how I wasn't taking full advantage of the hardware I had, so I ended up going back to trouble shooting and in the end it was the motherboard that was the issue. I replaced that and it's now up and running again! Now to go back to all the info about hardware transcoding in Jellyfin that people have linked for me. Thanks for everything!

I decided to clean out my CPU fan as it was clogged, when I assembled everything again it won't turn on 🙁

It's an old desktop PC. There are no lights glowing on the motherboard at all, though there is none specifically labelled "power". Just CPU, RAM, BOOT. None of these light up, not even a flash when it starts.

I have reseated the RAM, CPU, power cables. Removed the GPU to check.

The cord leading in to the PSU works but I don't have a way to test the PSU itself or the out cables, but I have reseated them at each end.

This PC was working fine before. But with no lights on the motherboard I suspect either the mobo or PSU?

Mobo is asrock x570 PSU is silverstone 650w strider gold S series

Any help appreciated!

Edit: I made a new post asking for hardware recommendations.

Edit 2: I managed to get a light on the motherboard, going to buy some more thermal paste and keep tinkering to see if I can get it started!

Edit 3: I never got that light to go again. In the end the comments on the other post convinced me that I had all that I needed for what I wanted (no upgrade needed), so I changed tack to seeing how to fix it. I had suspicions about the power connection still, so I bought a cheap PSU and tested it, no change. Then I bought a new motherboard (also a pretty cheap one, the cheapest that had what I needed and was also in a local store) and in the end that was the issue. Everything is up and running again now! Thanks for all the help everyone, you can now settle your bets.

This post will be pinned in this community so you can always find it, and will stay for about a week until replaced by the next one.

It’s for talking about anything that might not justify a full post. For example:

An investigative journalist who was barred from attending the national apology to survivors of abuse in care has now been granted accreditation.

Parliament's speaker has now granted temporary Press Gallery accreditation to journalist Aaron Smale for Tuesday's apology for abuse in care. He must, however, be accompanied by a Newsroom reporter at all times.

Last week, speaker Gerry Brownlee declined an application from Newsroom for Smale to report on the apology.

Parliament's Press Gallery gallery had asked for an explanation, as a refusal was quite rare, especially when a reporter met the gallery's criteria for accreditation.

It was told the application was declined, with the speaker citing Smale's conduct on a prior occasion.

On Monday afternoon, the press gallery wrote to the speaker, requesting a more fulsome explanation.

In an about-turn, the speaker approved the application.

At a media conference at Parliament in July, Smale and the Prime Minister had an exchange over the government's law and order policies, and whether the Prime Minister would acknowledge the link between abuse and gang membership.

According to Newsroom, Smale had also attended a media event at a youth justice facility in Palmerston North, and pressed children's minister Karen Chhour over whether it had been appropriate to associate the memory of the Māori Battalion with the new youth justice programme.

"The Beehive was in touch with us to say they believed he had been too forceful and too rude, in their view, in those two occasions," Newsroom's co-editor Tim Murphy told Nine to Noon.

Murphy said that Smale had conceded he had pushed the children's minister a bit far.

"But the one in Parliament, he was asking specific questions and kept asking them of the Prime Minister and I think that became irritating to the Prime Minister," Murphy said.

Describing Smale as "the most informed, possibly, probably of all New Zealand journalists" on the issue of abuse in state care institutions, Murphy said political discomfort should not be a reason to exclude Smale, and the ban should not stand.

"As a society that values the role of the fourth estate, we should value the work of journalists like Aaron, because it helps us take a critical look at where we have gone wrong and how we may move forward," said the Greens' media and communications spokesperson Hūhana Lyndon.

"Barring a leading journalist from an important event like this speaks to this Government's lack of accountability. It is something we might expect in Putin's Russia, not 21st century Aotearoa New Zealand."

Dunedin Airport CEO Daniel De Bono weighed in on the topic in an interview with New Zealand’s RNZ radio. Describing airports as “hotbeds of emotion,” he pointed to a study suggesting a 20-second hug is enough to get a burst of the “love hormone” oxytocin and argued that moving customers along quickly allows more people to get more hugs.

Submissions on tolling the replacement gorge road have now closed, but Woodville residents are refusing to give up fighting.

Under the current proposal, those driving between Palmerston North and Woodville in a light vehicle could pay $4.30 per trip, $8.60 for a return - and up to $17.20 for heavy vehicles.

The former State Highway 3 through the Manawatū Gorge closed in 2017 due to rockfall.

Companies and shareholders associated with 12 fast-track projects gave more than $500,000 in political donations to National, Act and New Zealand First and their candidates, RNZ analysis shows.

The projects include a quarry extension into conservation land and a development whose owner was publicly supported by National MPs during a legal battle with Kāinga Ora.

University of Otago legal expert Professor Andrew Geddis said the Cabinet Manual doesn't cover whether receiving a donation is a conflict of interest.

In a political system where a lot of the money used for campaigning comes from private sources, it would be difficult to bar parties from being involved in decisions which impact donors.

"The unions give lots of money to the Labour Party. If that was then to mean that the Labour Party couldn't pass workplace relations legislation that impacts on unions, it would take a huge policy issue just out of play."

If this was the rule, donors wouldn't donate, he said.
