I expect a written version of this video will be published to TechSpot in a day or two?

AMD advertised a roughly 16% IPC increase for Zen 5 over the previous Zen 4 architecture, and while we are fully aware that IPC doesn't linearly scale with gaming performance, we were a bit surprised to find that the 9700X and 9600X are no more than 3% faster than their predecessors in the most CPU-bottlenecked 720p gaming benchmarks.

Such a deviation from AMD's claims took everyone by surprise in the tech press, some reviewers even wondered initially if they had bad samples, there's plenty of discussion and drama in online communities. Like everyone else, we did several rounds of re-testing, and tried poking and prodding with the settings to figure out if we could better understand the architecture. Through the course of our testing, we found some interesting core scheduling behavior, and set out on an adventure.

Our argument with this article is not that SMT is the way to go [sic], but rather that there's something in the SMT or non-SMT behavior that affects performance on Zen 5 more than on previous processors.

In short

  • Victorian health authorities have detected and treated a cooling tower believed to be the source of a legionnaires' disease outbreak in Melbourne.

  • Chief health officer Dr Clare Looker believes the peak of the outbreak has passed.

What's next?

  • Health authorities will continue to test cooling towers in the unlikely event of a second source of the spread of the outbreak.

Dead Beats, listen up! Mori here. I’m on vacation!

I finally made it to my destination, but it was a rough journey…long story short, I missed my first flight. It was a circus but I managed to get on another and am finally resting with the family back in the underworld! Just sitting back and relaxing with Mama Mori and talking her ear off about the various developments in my world has been a much needed respite, but there’s also a lot of family friends I don’t know around me at all times, so I’m definitely hiding in a corner and watching anime for the time being, mimosa in hand…that in and of itself has been relaxing, though! >u<

I think streaming will be difficult surrounded by many many other reapers and dark entities. But only for several days! After that, it’s back to our homeland and I can once again spend a bit of time with the dead beats. I have a few games in mind I bet I could play! With some time to chat as well.

Thinking about it critically, the 5 weeks I took off for surgery were not rejuvenating at all (lol)! So I suppose a small summer vacation where I don’t worry too much about how much I’m streaming should be ok…after all, it’s something I do primarily out of it being fun for me more than anything.

PHANTOMIME is releasing in about 2 weeks!! The long awaited moment approaches us…there are a lot of things on my mind, and I feel nervous and apprehensive…but that’s just proof of how much the album means to me, right?! That’s so much better than just feeling lukewarm about it, and not really caring what happens. I’ve been pushing hard with music for a long time, and to see that no matter how many doubts about myself I still have, things still seem to be on the up and up in the music department and I want to push it further still, just a little!

I hope you guys will love it! Until then…time for grass.

Mori

"Comma-la" unfortunately doesn't help much for people without US accents lol (though of course people in the US are who the question and answer are most relevant to). On first reading -- without the accent or something close to it -- it implies "kom-uh-luh", whereas with the accent it implies something more like "kah-muh-luh", just based on how people pronounce "comma" differently.

There are different perspectives on how voting should work, such as voting based on "does this contribute to this discussion / to this community" vs based on "do I agree with this / do I like this".

Either way, blanket-downvoting something instead of voting based on the content's merit seems to be behaviour to be discouraged.

I worry that if mass graves due to covid weren't enough to jolt near-unanimous support for protective measures, little else will. Would of course love to be proven wrong :(

edit: for the sake of clarity / not accidentally misrepresenting things, graves would be dug up there (as per the article) with/without covid, but the number of bodies being buried in that manner went to ~7x the amount during non-covid according to the article.

Rise of Nations (originally released back in 2003) had/has some interesting ideas to reduce some of the busywork:

  • Worker units will automatically try to gather/build nearby after a short (configurable) delay if they're not doing anything.
  • Cities (the main worker-producing structure) has a rally point option that's essentially "all nearby empty resource gathering", so you can queue a dozen workers and they'll distribute themselves as they're created.
  • Production buildings can be set to loop over their current queue, letting you build continually without intervention as long as you maintain enough resources each time the queue "restocks".
  • Units that engage in combat without being given an explicit target will try (with modest success) to aim for nearby units which they counter.

For the most part, none of the implemented options are strictly better than micromanaging them yourself:

  • You will always spend less time idling workers if you micromanage them yourself.
  • The auto-rally-point doesn't always prioritize the resources that you would if you did it yourself.
  • Queueing additional units is slightly less resource-efficient than only building one thing at a time.
  • Total DPS is higher if you manually micro effectively.

But the options are there when you need them, which I think is a a nice design. It doesn't completely remove best-in-class players being rewarded for their speed as a player, but does raise the "speed floor", allowing slower players to get more bang for their buck APM-wise, and compete a bit more on the strategy/tactics side of the game instead.

Then let's transcribe part of the opening:

~~I know what you're thinking -- it's a stupid question, it's an FPS. It's the definitive FPS. And it's a fair point. DOOM ticks all the boxes required for a reasonable definition of a first person shooter. It's presented from a first-person perspective, and shooting the bad guys is a key part of it. But the FPS genre didn't exist when DOOM was released. The term "first person shooter" wasn't common until a few years later.~~

~~So what genre was DOOM? How was it originally described?~~

Edit I've now understood that quoting most of the video's opening salvo has unfortunately misrepresented the video's contents to the people who are still trying to leave comments without actually watching it. It's a video about what DOOM's genre is and what DOOM's genre was, not only the latter. The title looks clickbait-y but is honestly pretty accurate regarding the subject of the video.

Patch notes have 3 weapons/stratagems getting nerfed vs 5 weapons/stratagems getting buffed. I don't own the game but it sounds like they're already hitting it from both sides? If they do nothing but buffs there's a huge risk of just powercreeping everything.

Sure, but not much of that battery improvement is coming from migrating the APU's process node. Moving from TSMC's 7nm process to their 6nm process is only an incremental improvement; a "half-node" shrink rather than a full-node shrink like going from their 7nm to their 5nm.

The biggest battery improvement is (almost definitely) from having a 25% larger battery (40Whr -> 50Whr), with the APU and screen changes providing individually-smaller battery life improvements than that. Hence the APU change improving efficiency "a little".

Unless you're also throwing money at YouTube premium (etc), isn't this by definition unsustainable to do? So it's not really a viable long-term strategy either.

Like don't get me wrong, I don't want all the tracking and stuff either, but somebody has to pay those server bills. If it's not happening through straight cash then it's going to be through increasingly aggressive monetization and cost-cutting strategies.

You seem to be using the term "open source" for what is instead commonly called "source-available", which has a distinct meaning from open source.

[Source-available software] includes arrangements where the source can be viewed, and in some cases modified, but without necessarily meeting the criteria to be called open-source.

[Open-source software] is released under a license in which the copyright holder grants users the rights to use, study, change, and distribute the software and its source code to anyone and for any purpose.

edit: fixed duplicated phrasing

It isn't new, and framing it as though it were seems rather disingenuous.
