Update from yesterday's post on needing help with my rent, thank you to everyone who has helped! I'm very close now, just 60 bucks away! I'm in awe at everyone's generosity and kindness, thank you to everyone who bumped the thread too! You're the kinds of people who would defend and aid a stranger from losing shelter - you're real heroes of the working class. I'm so grateful to share this world with you.

I mean, I know Fallout's social commentary and heavy-handed attempts at poignancy is pretty on the nose in terms of the desolate mid-century american wasteland practically screaming at you "THIS IDEOLOGY AND LIFESTYLE LEADS TO DEATH AND ANNIHILATION", but I'd say that Fallout is as much as celebration of 50s/60s americana as it is a critique of it. Like, yes, it's literally post-apocalyptic, but its making constant adoring allusions to sci-fi drive-in B movies, midcentury pop culture, and pulp fiction. There's a real unironic love and appreciation for that era of America on display in Fallout, much to my chagrin, even as someone who can deeply share that cultural reverence. Sometimes I feel like it goes down the "wow wasn't the 60s cool and wacky?!" route a little bit too much at times, especially these days. Its like, yeah, but if you're not further deconstructing it in some way or using it to make an interesting point, it feels a little hollow. Fallout is at its best (in my view) when it's able to perform as a simultaneous celebration and deconstruction of Americana. I think it disarms people who might not be willing to accept a critique of America otherwise.

update from yesterday's post - I got my paycheck and now know exactly how much I need to safely make rent, I'm just $180 away. Then I can settle my anxiety, work this new job, and finally unclench my jaw. Any help would mean a lot. Even if you can't help, thank you for your solidarity and love

When I was a child, my scratch-a-liberal family would give me endless shit about putting ketchup on my eggs. Because it's "gross" to them - never mind what I thought tasted good as a stupid idiot child. I was told it was childish and to outgrow it if I wanted to be taken seriously, and so I did. For the first time in about 20 years I had an egg and cheese sandwich with ketchup on it. They were wrong. They were such absolute fools. Ketchup on eggs is god tier, as good if not better than sriracha. Little pigeon was 100% right about her own taste and I wish I could tell her that.

I know this probably wasn't your main point OP, but it's weird how people assign such moral and cultural value around someone putting a sweet vinegary vegetable paste on their food. "Oh no, the optics!" Absolutely unhinged, not materialist, and frankly embarrassing for any grown-ass adult to pass judgment on someone else's food tastes. Unless it's Mayo, that stuff is nasty - I don't like it on my food and therefore nobody else should be allowed to have it without feeling shame.

Also, who the fuck are these french chefs? Are we sure they aren't clowns? Mimes perhaps? It's my understanding that roughly 30% of France's population is now Mimes.

I'm so sorry for making this post, I really wish I didn't have to ask for help, but it's exceptionally urgent. I've exhausted all of my other options and I don't know where else to go.

I've been doing hard labor nearly every day the past month, backbreaking cargo deliveries, and it's still not enough. I'm starting a new job next week with much better pay and hours, but in the interim I'm worried I won't be able to make rent and pay my bills. I'm so exhausted and at my wit's end and I don't want to let my roommates down - they're very kind people.

I feel like I'm on fire with anxiety, just totally on edge. Fiscal instability really fucks with your ability to think. I get my last paycheck tomorrow, but I have a very sure gut feeling that it won't be enough for rent. The worst part is that the way my last job cuts my checks and doles out hours and tips, I have no idea how much the check will be until the day they pay me, so I'm not even sure how short I'm going to be on my rent and bill payments. I figure I'd be secure with an extra $600, but I'm also not sure how appropriate or realistic that is to ask for from relative strangers on the internet. Anything anyone can contribute or share at all would mean a lot.

I've cut down everything I can. I already live extremely modestly, practically an ascetic. I go to a food bank every Saturday and check local food pantries regularly, I've sold everything I have of any value, I only have two pairs of shoes and those are slowly disintegrating. I feel like the world is telling me I don't deserve anything more - hell, by capital's logic, I probably don't deserve a safe home. I feel powerless, it's scary nerve-wracking stuff.

If there's anything I can do in return to show my gratitude, if you need help writing or proofreading or video editing or transcription or IT help or graphic design work or advice or anything, anything at all, please let me know.

Even if nobody is able to contribute, thank you so much to hexbear and everyone on this site, for your solidarity, for inspiring hope in my soul, and for making the world a much less scary place. I really feel the healing love of comradeship here, and I deeply appreciate all of you.

I know many people who have stated OP's point are often being hyperbolic for the sake of comedy, but I really do think you're on to something here, and I want to elaborate on it further. Nearly universally, every one of these online chuds who make endless waterfalls of "HAS insert media here GONE WOKE?!" content - if you followed all of their advice and listened to all of their complaints and did exactly what they asked you to, you would eventually just have hardcore pornography wherein someone who looks just like them violently fucks women and kills men. A snuff film, in effect. And every one of these "content creators" I mentioned, it should be said, just so happen to look like the sort of guy who just goons all day and loves jacking off more than anything else. I mean this, seriously and sincerely, and as someone who is generally sex-positive and pro-masturbation: these dudes have had their brains fucking COOKED and FRIED by watching too much hardcore porn and just gooning constantly. It's almost self-evident, they're practically telling on themselves. And now, any time they engage with media whose sole focus isn't being titillating to their deranged viciously misogynistic fantasies, they throw a tantrum like a baby. More broadly, I think they apply this same worldview onto reality at a certain point too, and then their pornographic habits bleed into how they view the real world, and even worse, how they view politics and other human beings. Porn can be fine, isolated in a context, and so can self-pleasure, but these dudes are clearly taking it way too far and letting it infect how they see the rest of the world. Having 24/7 access to porn isn't enough, they DEMAND like a petulant child that all media, universally, look exactly like the porn they consume.

This is a thread I want to pull on more and an idea I've wanted to explore more. How men's porn consumption habits (specifically hardcore, violent, and overtly misogynistic pornography, which is blasted everywhere online) can lead to real changes in their political views, especially if it's something that's done daily or every other day. Then, by demanding that reality conform to their expectations that have been established through pornography, they essentially non-consentually rope us all into their weird sexual fantasies and kinks. You see it with Muskrat and his breeding kink. You see it with incels and tradcaths. And you see it with this weird unwavering insistence that "NO! All women are SEXY BITCHES! It is woke BRAINWASHING to tell me strong butch women exist!! Theres never been a strong woman ever! I know that for a fact because every day I watch 3-4 hours of videos of women being overpowered and brutalized by men! That's normal and healthy!! Shut up I don't have a problem!!"

title. when are we gonna get more of The New Norm? i desperately need more of this show. this isn't a joke. New Norm is the conservative comedy we desperately need right now.

please, i can't stop thinking about The Old Norm, how his old-fashioned shenanigans are needed right now in these crazy times, he needs to go against his family - his stupid dipshit daughter and his bitch wife, everyone is conspiring against him - and i need to see him take on woke disney rainbow soy!! don't forget, never forget, this stuff right now? that's happening around us? it's not normal! they're calling it the new normal, but this isn't normal! please do not let New Norm be forgotten to the abyss of internet history, we need more Norm. just an extra short or a teaser or a plush or something. New Norm is going to change comedy, it's going to change X forever. in less than 4 minutes it completely shook my world, showed me just how entertainingly bad neocon's cloying pathetic attempts at comedy can be.

let's talk about why we love The New Norm itt

please share your favorite Norm characters, moments, fan theories, and lore

yeah, and like, I hope it's clear in my OP, but literally all I want to know is what to do to not trigger their flagging system again. I have no idea what I did or why I was flagged as NSFW. If there's something I need to do to prevent their automated algorithm from doing that again, I kind of need to know what it is to properly be able to use my tumblr blog in the normal expected way. I'm not looking to admonish anyone, I'm not looking to yell at anyone, or berate anyone, I just want to know how I'm supposed to use their website properly, and FAQs just don't cut it. There isn't a FAQ for my specific situation, lol.

[-] an_actual_pigeon@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago

That perspective makes sense, it's definitely a "yes, and", not an "either/or". And while it makes sense from a business and logistics perspective, I think companies being more opaque and being harder to access is going to have severely negative effects over the long term. I think it's only reasonable to expect that every organization with humans behind it should have some sort of human representative, even if it's just a doorman at the office to tell you to go away. They benefit immensely from the public, why shouldn't there be a way for the public to communicate with them? But earnestly, maybe that's a naive and childish expectation for me to have.

[-] an_actual_pigeon@hexbear.net 14 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Absolutely. I want to be clear too, I don't harass or abuse these workers and I don't encourage others to. These quests are just quixotic attempts of trying to find some official representative of the company who can tell me in clear language the information I need to know to properly utilize their product or service. If I'm calling someone who I know wouldn't possibly be able to help me, I immediately apologize and ask them if they know who I can or should contact, and if they can redirect me. This has worked out for me pretty well in the past, but it's often frustrating the amount of hoops that are put in place to make it so difficult to contact someone. I understand though, I've worked in positions where I've taken inbound calls from the public. I think it's an element of hostile design that's made all of our lives worse, and these companies love passing the buck around from department to department, from role to role, so that oops, nobody is ever accountable! Websites, Apps, Healthcare Providers, Hiring Agencies, Insurance Companies, Utility Companies, idk, it just sucks. But yeah, generally I'm a big believer you attract more flies with honey than vinegar anyways. I personally have a feeling it's less likely that the public's abuse of these workers caused this and more likely that it's the result of profiteering strategies to make customer service cheaper and cheaper.

god and like, the way they try to sell the lack of phone calls, the lack of human connection as a positive thing.

"oh it's so easy! use our AI chat! use our app! we bet as a young person, you've got phone anxiety right? well do we have the thing for you, it's a chatbox! we'll text your phone instead of calling, don't you like that? Don't you love it? isn't it convenient for you?! oh no, it's entirely incidental that we saved millions of dollars by switching to this instead of having a call center or having to pay a couple people to answer phones, oh no no no, this is for YOUR benefit!"

it's so fucking condescending. i dont want an app, i dont want AI answers, I want to sit down with one of your employees for 5 minutes and talk to them about what I need, because I'm a person, a social creature who likes interacting with other social creatures. I'm not a god damn robot. where is the warm beating heart?! where is the fucking blood anymore?!

Please forgive the length of my post

I'm a tenacious and uninhibited kind of person. Companies hate me. I talk to them like equals - asking questions, expecting answers. They hate me for it. All you have to do is give me a phone number to a real person, that's all you had to do. But instead, I'm doing OSInt trying to find the office number for a random lady in your HR department, because you've made yourself completely inaccessible. "Send us an e-mail with this form" haha fat chance, like anyone will read that. How stupid do you think I am? How much contempt do you have for me? How much disrespect do you have for your customers and end-users that you won't let them hear a human being address their concerns? You don't have a spokesperson? A reception? A PR Guy? Fuck off. Sorry, I guess they're too busy working from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM remotely from home three days a week, like the rest of you white collar freaks.

So ok, I try searching for office phone numbers. If that doesn't work, being fortunate enough to live in a big city, sometimes my next move is just to show up at their local headquarters. I highly recommend it to everyone, that gets results. They hate that. That shit terrifies them. Nothing terrifies them more than an actual consumer of their product showing up in person. Actual physical accountability. It'd be hilarious if it wasn't so pathetic and sad. You're that atomized, that alienated and scared, that you're terrified of a customer just asking a question to you, in person, face to face. What am I going to do? I am but one woman, one of the people your company needs to keep enriching itself, simply smiling in your office in a well-fitted suit. Why are you so afraid? Is it that all the police and security guards money can buy can't stop me from being tenacious enough to ask a sincere question? That all of your money still can't account for being annoyed by people outside of your control? Seriously, just pathetic. These people live in such constant control of their sensory environment, constantly inundated with racist crime propaganda, the idea of a friendly stranger using their product is literally impossible to them. Imagine being that misanthropic, what losers.

I made a tumblr blog at the end of last year. Was very excited, as someone who has a pathological fear of social media and was looking for a way to build connections and solidarity more. An attempt to be part of society and be less of an exclusively lurking 'digital agoraphobe'. I considered using the new blog as a sort of professional portfolio as well. Immediately, seconds after creating it, I'm marked as explicit. I made no posts, followed nobody, messaged no users. I'm marked explicit. I reach out to tumblr support.

9 months. 9 months later they get back to me. "HMMM UMM WE'RE NOT SURE SWEETIE.... ARE YOU SUREEEE YOUR BLOG ISNT SEXUALLY EXPLICIT?" "Yep" "OK WE'VE UNFLAGGED IT NOW TEEHEE WHOOPSIE!!" "Why did this happen? What did I do to trigger your flagging system? Can you please let me know what I need to do to prevent this happening in the future? I'm trying to build a professional portfolio here, and I can't just have it randomly be inaccessible for 9 months." radio silence Like, it's not that big of a deal. I'm always friendly and cordial whenever I have a chance to actually talk to someone. This is why I'm such a big phone call booster. All this text and e-mail shit is exactly what the elite in charge want, because they can just sit on it forever, never have to respond. "We love to hear feedback from everyone!" and their form just gets sent to an inbox that's never opened. But a Phone call with a human? A face to face interaction? THAT'S fucking accountability that forces them to immediately respond. Look man, I expect to be treated like a bug at this point, to be treated like a cockroach. At the bare minimum, you should be forced to actually tell me to go fuck myself. Especially from tumblr, a website that markets itself as friendly and queer and hip, to randomly be telling it's users (many of whom have serious sexual traumas) that they're flagged for being "Sexually Explicit" for doing nothing. I won't even open the can of worms of them doing that to random SFW selfies of transmen and transwomen, groups of people who are already regularly told their existence is inherently sexually explicit. This is why I avoided all of this social media shit to begin with, why it terrifies me - in addition to the damage 4chan kiwifarms mfs can do if they decide they don't like you. Complete unaccountability, everything you build online can just be instantly undone by cold, uncaring, distant, privileged, elitist freaks. No trial, no reasons given. Literally kafkaesque. And I hate how as a relatively young person, this is damaging my ability to make connections with others.

I'm not going to go to tumblr's offices and demand answers or anything, I don't give enough of a fuck about this, it just makes me sad and tired. Me making this post is the extent to which I care, and even this feels like too much work in regards to this. God damn, why the fuck does the SFW/NSFW distinction have to dominate the entire internet?! Most people are adults! Why are we intellectually and artistically kneecapping the repository of all human knowledge so some toddling pants-shitters can "safely" watch skibidi toilet 47?! It's not even safe, kids are still getting groomed online! All of this shit, holding back culture and sexuality and drugs, all of that for the supposed safety of the children, and they still get groomed online. It doesn't even work! Most of us grew up with the internet in some capacity, whomst amongst us didn't check the "Over 18" box when we were underage? We should have entire generations of people who already know from firsthand experience this shit doesn't work! The SFW/NSFW dichotomy allows people to marginalize subjects they don't want to face or talk about into "NSFW" where they become filthy untouchable pariahs. The idea of making certain ideas or people or subjects "not safe" is going to fuck with people, even on a subconscious level.

Social Media, the internet, websites in general, it's like they have active hate and contempt for their end users, because as someone who is supposedly their prime target demo, they have made their services too frustrating, patronizing, and difficult for me to use. I was an IT SysAdmin for many years for fuck's sake, how can they design something so hostile even I don't feel comfortable using it?!

anyways, my sincere thanks comrade for reading this far and for letting me vent this somewhere. I know it's kind of a cringe rant, but at least I know on hexbear the posters are (mostly) actual real people with flesh and blood.

I'm sincerely sorry for taking offense at something that was clearly not directed towards me.

I feel there's this very common perception that women are all big soft lazy squishy babies who are automatically ontologically incapable and unwilling to perform dangerous, difficult, and risky activities, and I feel like that perception is unfortunately in the background of our world everywhere I go, almost invisible, like a constant low hum of radiation. I worry that unchecked blanket statements can help reinforce our worst biases.

I'm self-aware enough to acknowledge that I might be projecting that insecurity onto a clearly well-intentioned hexbear post, so fr, earnestly, sorry for being annoying about it.

[-] an_actual_pigeon@hexbear.net 38 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I understand what you're getting at - material conditions make it difficult for women to cycle, especially in North America - but as a woman who is literally a professional bike courier and spends most of my waking hours on the road cycling, I can't help but take a little tiny bit of umbrage at your statement. Not only is "women don't ride bikes" a factually inaccurate statement, it denies the actual courage and strength and bravery that existing women cyclists have to possess in a world that is actively hostile to us and our safety.

There are many women who ride bikes in spite of how dangerous conditions are, and not a statistically insignificant number of them - they account for about 25% of all cyclists in the United States. I see hundreds of them every day. It takes courage from them. It's the equivalent of reading "Well now you know why there are no women in video games" or "This is why there are no women in STEM" - again, I truly understand what you're getting at, that there are material conditions that make these environments more hostile to women specifically. However, I'm sure you can understand why your phrasing feels a little insulting - as if these women, most of whom probably had to fight extra hard fit in, simply don't exist. Their accomplishments, their names, mean nothing because "there are just no women who do that, sigh, what a shame - no women's history here to celebrate". An alternative and more accurate way of phrasing it would be "there aren't as many women who ride bikes". Sincerely hope I'm not being annoying or sounding like a scold or anything, but like, yeah dude, I'm a woman and ride bikes for a living, lol, there are women who ride bikes, idk what else to tell ya. also this isn't even anything new, here's some context on the long-standing and well-established historical strategic partnership between women and bicycles

edit:

In bike-unfriendly cities, only men with thick skin ride bikes

look man, I know broad strokes paint a picture quicker, but come on, lol, that's such a blanket statement
