Meta - Progress and Controversy (blog.universeodon.com)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by noodlejetski@kbin.social to c/fediverse@kbin.social

A few months ago, this concept of “p92” started leaking and it was rumored that Meta was joining the fediverse. Initially, not much happened with the discussion. I could run around and say “Nope, I’m not defederating” and no one really cared or challenged that position. I made it clear I advocate for user agency; I’ll teach users how to block Meta if they desire. No one said much to me. Some debates came and went, life went on

trans youth gender-affirming treatment doesn't use hormones. it uses puberty blockers, so that the child doesn't go through puberty, and when they turn 18 they can state HRT with a better outcome. the therapy is reversible, so when the child stops taking puberty blockers, they undergo normal puberty process, and it's a recommended treatment for trans youth by multiple pediatrician and psychiatrist societies and associations.

All of Duty - you work in a company which, after several waves of layoffs, has been severely understaffed.

apparently some Mastodon admins got contacted by Meta and met with them after signing an NDA. I'm quite surprised how many Masto admins want to "just wait and see, maybe it's not gonna be that bad".

it used to be the same on Mastodon back in November during the great migration. everyone was talking about Twitter and Elon. just give it some time.

Lemmy needs two things to be successful:

  1. users
  2. users

and it's already getting more and more of each of those.

they're not against growth, it's just not their priority and they don't want to achieve it at any cost.

the only thing that's worrying me about the subreddits closing indefinitely (even though I wholeheartedly support it), is that people are going to use even more closed off, unsearchable platforms as alternatives. /r/unixporn mods say their only "official" alternative is currently their Discord "server".

edit: the message on /r/iPhone also directs people to their Discord. sigh.

DeArrow is a browser extension for YouTube for reducing sensationalism, misleading titles and aggressive thumbnails. DeArrow works by formatting all titles, and replacing thumbnails with screenshots at specific timestamps.

No more dealing with clickbait, arrows, or annoying faces.

Users can submit better titles and thumbnails for each video and vote on them.

hopefully it's going to work with Piped and Invidious in the future, too.

the only reason I can think of is "to spite me".

that's my biggest pet peeve, too.

GloriousEggroll, the mastermind behind modified version of Valve's Proton, posts his code on GitHub, and then links to his Discord as a place for reporting bugs.
