The JWT exploit bypasses 2FA requirements. It basically steals your active session and allows a third party to use it.
Thanks for the work. As a heads up it appears most of the block instances are back however I believe explodingheads is still missing which you may want to confirm.
EDIT: it has been added back to the block list.
Admin account was compromised. Looks like they are working on it but it will take a bit to fix all the stupid that was done.
EDIT: Looks like things are starting to resolve.
EDIT 2: MichelleG account admin was restored and she posted and update but shortly after the changes happened again. Her account is likely still compromised with someone else accessing things via it.
EDIT 3: lemmy.world back online. MichelleG has again been removed as admin. Most things appear to have been cleaned up. Blocked instances still need to be fixed however.
Yea like are you fucking kidding. Why should a community of 18k people shut down on the whim of 2 people and move to a place with a fraction of the members and far less history. If they are just planning to park the community name then the admins should step in and either remove it so a new community could be made or allow someone willing to take over. Lets not skip over the fact the lemdro.id is a newer instance with no real track record either.
This is one of the biggest things I think Lemmy needs. You should be able to create a backup of your profile and export/import it into another instance. That way if something happens or you have a problem with the instance admins you can migrate with no loss or minimal loss to your account.
From what I have seen so far not likely. Though it would be nice if users were given some type of warning when attempting to post/comment/reply to defederated instances.
No. The short story there was an inactive mod was top mod and came back just to make the whole sub private and got backlash from the most active mod about it. Admins ended up removing the inactive mod. There is additional back and forth between the two that got posted but it basically ends as the one actually doing the work gained full control.
My problem is they had the technology. We gotta build a new technology now.
Yea I mean I get it. It just sucks that this is the first real experience I am having with this system. Would have been nice to get a little more experience under my feet before having to deal with this. I suppose this should be expected. Lemmy is likely experiencing some extreme growing pains unlike anything it has seen before.
I totally understand that while this is an annoyance at the end of the day this is likely still a more desirable outcome then what is happening with Reddit. At least here that set of admins can only do so much damage to the overall system while the Reddit admins have total control over the whole system.
Gotta say this being one of my first impressions of lemmy... Its not great. Beehaw had a large tech and gaming section that I literally only just subbed too.
Agree with the Synology recommendation for a simple starter. Though personally always recommend the 4 bay.
